A considered guide to Gujarat
Gujarat is a state in western India with the Arabian Sea on its coast and the Great Rann salt marshes in Kutch. A trip here is a multi-base circuit, not a single-resort holiday, with a seven-night loop and Ahmedabad as the usual gateway.
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Region | West India, covering Kutch, Saurashtra, central and north Gujarat |
| Trip type | Multi-base circuit mixing heritage, temples, wildlife, beaches and crafts |
| Best season | November to February, cool and dry, about 10-30°C |
| Ideal length | 7 nights for a first visit |
| Main gateway | Ahmedabad, the state's main air and rail hub |
| Starting point on cost | Packages start from Rs.9,500 per person, land only, twin sharing |
Kutch holds the salt desert and craft villages, Saurashtra has Dwarka, Somnath, Junagadh and Gir, and central Gujarat includes Vadodara and the Statue of Unity area. Pick regions based on the days you have, because the distances between them are real.
People choose Gujarat for three reasons: landscapes that exist nowhere else in India, living craft and festival traditions, and an easy, domestic way to cover a long circuit. Each reason is tied to a specific place.
Ten places and areas cover the state's main draws. For a week, pick four or five rather than all ten, since road and rail time between regions adds up quickly.
November to February is the best window for Gujarat, with cool, clear, dry days. Crowds are high and prices peak in these months, so early booking matters.
| Months | Season and weather | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Winter, about 10-30°C, low rain | Best weather, highest crowds and prices; Rann Utsav and Uttarayan fall here |
| October and March | Shoulder months; October is 15-30°C, March is 25-40°C | October is comfortable but busy; March starts to heat up |
| April to June | Summer, about 30-45°C | Lowest prices and crowds, but April and May can exceed 40°C |
| July to September | Monsoon, 25-35°C, moderate rain | Rain and humidity affect outdoor sightseeing; Gir is closed from mid-June |
Monsoon rainfall varies by region: south and central Gujarat get more, while Kutch gets less. For wildlife, October to June is the better window for Gir.
Ahmedabad is the main gateway, described as the state's main air and rail hub. Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Bhuj also have airports, which helps if your circuit starts or ends away from Ahmedabad.
For Gir, Junagadh and Veraval are the major railheads, and Rajkot is the closest listed airport at about 170 km. Gir is about 60 km by road from Junagadh and about 45 km from Veraval. Published sources do not list airport-to-hotel times for other bases, so confirm transfers at booking.
Choose bases by region rather than by individual hotel. A first trip usually uses three or four bases: Ahmedabad for heritage, one or two in Saurashtra, and one in Kutch.
A seven-night loop with four bases covers the headline sights without rushing: Ahmedabad, Dwarka and Somnath, Sasan Gir, then Kutch. The order moves steadily west and north, so you avoid a long return leg.
With extra days, add Junagadh or Velavadar between Gir and Kutch, or Diu after Somnath.
Gujarat suits travellers interested in heritage, religious sites, wildlife, beaches, museums, handicrafts and regional cuisine, and those happy to move between bases. It works well for families, couples and senior travellers, especially from November to February.
It is less suited to travellers wanting a short, single-base trip that covers Kutch, Saurashtra and central Gujarat, because the circuits span several destinations and need multiple days. With only three or four days, choose one region, such as Ahmedabad plus Saurashtra, instead of the whole state.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
