Field notes
A considered guide to Cambodia
Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country between Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Most visitors build the trip around Angkor, Phnom Penh and the southern coastline, and a week is enough for the first two.
| Detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Region | Southeast Asia, with the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest |
| Main circuit | Siem Reap and Angkor, Phnom Penh, then the southern coast if time allows |
| Best season | November to February, cool and dry, with the highest demand |
| Ideal trip length | 7 to 14 nights; 10 days to two weeks if you add the coast |
| Gateways | Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (REP), Techo International Airport (KTI) near Phnom Penh, Sihanouk International Airport (KOS) |
| Starting point on cost | Starting from Rs.19,000 per person, land only, twin sharing |
A trip that tries to fit Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and the whole southern coast into a very short window will feel rushed. Choose two bases for a week and add the coast only when you have 10 days or more.
Cambodia's most important sites are the Angkor temple complex, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and a few quieter towns and coastal stops. Each carries a different kind of significance, so it helps to know what to expect at each one.
Check opening arrangements and any dress requirements at each site before you go. Rules can change, and your tour manager will confirm them locally.
Crowds at Angkor build through the morning and thin out in the late afternoon, so an early start gives you cooler air and fewer people. The same logic applies to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and to popular coastal ferries.
Carry water and a hat, and plan a rest stop in the middle of the day. For elders, shorter site visits in the morning and a break at the hotel tend to work better than a full-day push.
The most comfortable months are November to February, when rainfall is low and temperatures are around 22 to 33 C. This is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book early.
| Months | Season | What it means for travellers |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Cool and dry | Lower rainfall and comfortable temperatures; peak demand and prices |
| March to May | Hot and dry | Rising heat, with April the hottest month; lower prices in April and May |
| June to October | Wet and humid | Frequent rain, high humidity and lower prices; flooding can affect some areas |
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and strong winds from May to November. In the wet season, flooding can affect rural roads and some attractions, so keep your plans flexible.
If you prefer quiet temple visits, avoid these dates. If you want to see the festivals, expect crowded roads and plan transfers with extra time.
Most Indian travellers fly to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, usually with one stop. As of October 2026, published schedules show total journey times of about 6.5 to 8 hours from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Kochi; Bengaluru and Ahmedabad connect via Phnom Penh.
Techo International Airport replaced the old Phnom Penh airport as the capital's main gateway in 2025 and lies about 20 km south of the city. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is roughly an hour or more from Siem Reap town, so allow for the transfer.
Entry rules for Indian passport holders change from time to time. Check the current requirements on the official Cambodian government source before you book.
The simplest order is Siem Reap first, then Phnom Penh, then the southern coast. This avoids backtracking, because buses and minivans link Phnom Penh with Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Kampot.
| Cluster | Suggested nights | Pacing note |
|---|---|---|
| Siem Reap and Angkor | 3 to 4 | Early starts, midday rest, one light day for elders |
| Phnom Penh | 2 to 3 | Palace and museums, kept to short visits |
| Kampot and Kep | 2 | Slow coastal days after the temple circuit |
| Sihanoukville and islands | 2 to 3 | Ferry transfers; best for travellers with 10 days or more |
For a one-week trip, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh alone work well. A 10 to 14-night plan can add the coast. Elders usually do better with one fewer stop and longer stays in each base.
Vegetarian eating is possible in Cambodia, but it takes a little planning, as many Khmer dishes use fish sauce or shrimp paste. Tourist areas in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh have the widest choice.
Carry a few dry snacks for long drives and site days. Confirm vegetarian and Jain meal needs at booking, not on arrival.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
