Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Rwanda family holiday cover?
This 8-day trip covers Kigali and Akagera National Park, with 3 nights in the capital and 4 nights at an Akagera lodge. You see the Kigali memorial sites, a craft market, two game drives and a Lake Ihema boat safari. No road transfer is longer than about three hours.
Akagera is savannah country. Guides look for elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and antelope, with hippo and crocodile on the lake. Gorilla tracking belongs to Volcanoes National Park, has a minimum age of 15 and is not part of this route. Golden-monkey tracking there has a minimum age of 12, which also rules it out for younger children.

Why this route works for families with kids and grandparents
This route works because the longest transfer is two to three hours and the two bases stay put for several nights. Fewer hotel changes mean fewer bags to repack and fewer early starts.
- Game drives run in the cooler morning hours, and afternoons are kept free for the pool or a nap.
- Dinners are early on travel days so younger children are in bed on time.
- Grandparents can skip any single activity without breaking the day's plan.
- The safari vehicle is private, so you set the stop and snack schedule.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets something to look forward to. The same plan covers all three, so nobody waits around while another group does its own thing.
Younger children
- Spotting giraffe, zebra and elephant on the Akagera plains
- Hippo and crocodile watching from the Lake Ihema boat
- Craft market stop in Kigali to pick a basket or small souvenir
- Pool time at the lodge on the free afternoon
Teenagers
- Binoculars and a checklist of animals and birds for the game drives
- The Kigali memorial visit, which gives context on modern Rwanda
- Photography from the boat and the lodge deck at sunset
Grandparents
- Seated game drives from a vehicle, with no trekking
- Boat safari in a calm morning slot
- Unhurried memorial visit with a local guide
- Lodge deck evenings with tea and sightings talk
Pace, rest and daily rhythm
Expect one main activity a day, usually in the morning, followed by lunch and a rest window. Game drives start early because animals are most active in the cooler hours.
Drive days are Day 3 (Kigali to Akagera) and Day 7 (Akagera to Kigali), each about two to three hours with a comfort stop midway. Day 5 is the lightest, with a boat safari and a free afternoon. Strollers are usable in Kigali but not on park tracks, so carry younger children in a carrier or bring a small foldable seat for lodge grounds. If a grandparent uses a wheelchair or walking aid, tell us at booking so we can confirm step-free rooms and vehicle access.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Families usually stay in a triple room or two connecting doubles in standard 3-4 star properties. Triples and connecting rooms are limited at safari lodges, so request the room type at booking.
Meals are mostly buffet or set menus, which helps with fussy eaters. Vegetarian dishes are generally available, and Jain or no-onion-no-garlic meals need advance notice, so state them at booking. In remote lodges, carry some dry snacks and instant items from India as a backup. Children's portions, plain rice, eggs, bread, pasta and fruit are usually easy to arrange.
Travelling with kids and elders: five practical tips
- Carry ID and age proof. Park gates and activities apply age limits, so keep passports and printed copies for every child.
- Pack layers. Kigali ranges about 14-27 C, and mornings on game drives feel cool. A light fleece, hat and sunscreen cover most days.
- Plan health cover. Check yellow-fever and malaria guidance with your doctor well before departure, as requirements can change. Buy travel insurance with medical cover for all travellers.
- Bring regular medicines. Keep prescriptions and a basic first-aid kit in hand luggage, including motion-sickness tablets for hill roads.
- Keep small notes handy. Cards work in many places, but tips and roadside stops are easier with local cash.

Where families stay in Kigali and Akagera
Stays are in two bases: a mid-range city hotel in Kigali and a safari lodge in or near Akagera National Park. Hotels are standard 3-4 star by default, and we describe categories instead of promising a named property.
| Tier (indicative, per person) | Approx. price | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx. Rs.73,000 | Simple city hotel and basic safari lodge, fewer facilities |
| Standard 4-star (default) | Rs.97,000 | Comfortable city hotel, mid-range safari lodge, pool where available |
| Premium 5-star | Approx. Rs.1,55,000 | Larger rooms, upscale lodge setting, more on-site services |
Tier prices are indicative and depend on dates, room type and availability, so confirm at booking. The city base keeps airport and memorial visits easy, while the lodge base puts game drives and the boat safari close by.
Rwanda entry, money and flights for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders need to check Rwanda's current visa rules before travel, and the official immigration portal is the source to trust. Check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, and read our Rwanda visa for Indians guide for the steps.
The local currency is the Rwandan franc. We do not quote an exchange rate, so check a live rate before you convert. Flights from India usually connect through a hub, so total journey time depends on the routing and layover. We do not quote fares here, and airfare varies by season, so confirm at booking. Best months for Indian school holidays are July and August, but they fall in peak season.
When to go: best time to visit Rwanda from India
June to September is the long dry season and the busiest, with higher prices. For Akagera game drives, drier months make roads easier and animals gather near water.
- June to September: little rain, high demand and peak prices.
- December to February: a shorter dry interval with medium crowds.
- March to May: the wettest stretch, with fewer visitors and lower rates.
- October and November: short rains and medium to low crowds.
Daytime temperatures sit around 14-27 C across the year. Rainy-season flooding and mudslides can occur, so build flexibility into your dates.
Send the travellers' ages and your dates and we will return a quote with family-friendly room options.
