Journey notes
Why this route works
What a Rwanda honeymoon tour package covers
This 6N/7D route covers Kigali, Musanze near Volcanoes National Park and the Lake Kivu shore, with one gorilla trek as the main event. It suits couples who want a single big experience and a slow pace, not a country circuit.
Most Rwanda itineraries try to fit four parks into a week. This one does not. Gorilla trekking sits on Day 3, while you are still fresh from the flight, and the days after it stay deliberately light. Akagera and Nyungwe are left out on purpose, as combining all four major areas is better suited to a nine- to twelve-day trip.
Moments to plan around
The best moments on this route are the first misty morning near the park, the trek itself, a lakeside sunset and one private dinner. Each has a natural slot in the plan.
- Day 2 evening: your first view of the volcano ridgeline from the Musanze lodge terrace, usually clearest at dusk.
- Day 3 morning: the gorilla trek. Briefing at park headquarters, then a guided walk to a habituated family.
- Day 3 evening: a private dinner at the lodge, arranged on request (confirm at booking).
- Day 5 evening: sunset over Lake Kivu from the Rubavu or Gisenyi shore, with nothing scheduled after it.
Why this route suits couples
This route suits couples because it keeps you on three bases only, with short drives between them and a trek that two people share rather than a group excursion. Privacy comes from pace, not from remoteness.
- Few moves: Kigali, Musanze, Lake Kivu and back. Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is about three hours by road, and Musanze is roughly 90 minutes from Kigali by the direct route.
- A shared effort: the trek is physical enough to feel earned and short enough to finish by lunchtime.
- Built-in rest: Day 4 is empty by design, so a late breakfast and an unplanned afternoon are the default.
Romantic highlights
The highlights are small and specific rather than staged. Each one below is a named experience on this route.
- Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park: one trek per person, with a ranger-led briefing first.
- Candlelit dinner at the Musanze lodge: arranged for the night of your trek, on request.
- Golden monkey tracking: an optional Day 4 morning in the same park, shorter than the gorilla trek.
- Lake Kivu kayaking or paddleboarding: available on the Rubavu or Gisenyi shore, best done before the afternoon wind picks up.
- Kigali craft market stop: an easy way to pick up wedding-trip keepsakes on Day 2.
- Lakeside sunset on Day 5: an unscheduled evening on the water's edge.
How the days flow
The days follow a gentle rhythm: one active block, one rest block and an unscheduled evening. Only Day 3 has an early start, and Day 4 has none.
Days 1 and 2 are about arriving and settling in, with the Kigali visit kept to the morning before the northward drive. Day 3 starts early for the park briefing. Day 4 is open. Day 5 is a drive and a lake afternoon. Day 6 is a late start and a return to Kigali, which leaves Day 7 free of any rush to the airport.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples, three things matter more than star rating: a room with a view, a quiet position away from the road and short access to the park gate or lake. All stays on this trip are in the standard 3-4 star category.
Near Volcanoes National Park, look for a lodge with a terrace facing the ridgeline and a fireplace or heater, as evenings are cold. On Lake Kivu, a room with a water view matters more than a pool. In Kigali, a quiet hotel close to the airport road saves time on the first and last nights.
Best months for a couple's trip to Rwanda
The best months for a couple's trip to Rwanda are June to September, when rain is lowest and trails are firmest. The trade-off is peak pricing and early permit sell-outs. Figures below are for Kigali, as of 2026.
| Months | Season | Rain per month | What it means for a couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| June to September | Long dry season | 15 to 60 mm | Firmest trails, peak crowds and peak prices |
| December to February | Short dry season | 65 to 80 mm | Drier interval, medium crowds, steadier value |
| March to May | Long rains | 100 to 155 mm | Wettest months, lowest prices, muddy trails |
| October to November | Short rains | 95 to 110 mm | Wet mountain trails, medium to low crowds |
Mountain parks run noticeably colder than Kigali in every season, so pack layers whichever month you choose.
Add-ons worth considering
Four add-ons fit this route well: a private dinner, a spa session, a photographer and a scenic helicopter flight. Each is optional and priced separately, so confirm availability at booking.
- Private dinner: best on Day 3, after the trek, when you will want a quiet table.
- Massage or spa session: fits Day 3 afternoon or Day 4, if your lodge has a spa.
- Photographer: most useful on the trek morning and the Day 5 lake sunset. Rules on camera use near the gorillas are set by the park.
- Helicopter scenic tour: operates from Kigali International Airport and fits best on Day 1 or Day 7 if timings allow.
Where to stay in Rwanda on a honeymoon
The best base for this honeymoon is the Musanze or Kinigi area, which sits closest to the Volcanoes National Park gate. Kigali works for the first and last nights, and the Rubavu or Gisenyi shore of Lake Kivu adds a slower middle stretch.
The stays below are indicative per-person tiers for context. This package is priced at the Standard 4-star level of Rs.94,500.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | approx Rs.71,000 | Simple, clean rooms, basic views, shorter dining options |
| Standard 4-star (this package) | Rs.94,500 | Comfortable rooms, on-site restaurant, terrace or garden views where available |
| Premium 5-star | approx Rs.1,51,000 | Larger rooms, better views, spa access and more privacy |
Hotel names are confirmed on your final voucher. Prices are indicative, and the exact figure depends on dates and permit availability.
Rwanda entry, money and flights for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Rwanda. Apply through the official government immigration portal and check it for the current fee and processing time, since both can change. Our Rwanda visa for Indians guide walks through the steps. The local currency is the Rwandan franc. Check the day's rate at a bank or forex desk before you travel, and carry some USD for permits and incidentals. Flights from India to Kigali International Airport usually connect through a Gulf or East African hub, so expect a long travel day. Confirm fares and timings when you book. See our wider Rwanda tour packages if you want a longer route.
Gorilla permit and trek cost: what to budget
The gorilla permit is the biggest single cost on this trip. As of 2026, the standard fee for international visitors is USD 1,500 per person for one trek, according to the Rwanda Development Board. Park entry elsewhere in Rwanda is charged per person per day, so confirm current prices before you plan extra park visits.
Whether the permit sits inside your final quote depends on how it is priced at booking, so confirm this line by line. Permits are limited, and peak-season dates can fill 9 to 12 months ahead, so booking dates before flights is the safer order. Road transfers, lodge category and season move the rest of the cost.
Practical tips before you travel
- Break in your walking shoes before you fly. Trails near Volcanoes National Park can be steep and muddy.
- Pack a light rain shell and a fleece, as mountain parks are colder than Kigali.
- Carry small notes for tips and drinks. Cards work at larger hotels, but not everywhere.
- Keep Day 7 free of other plans in case of road delays before your flight.
Tell us your travel dates and anything you want planned as a surprise, and we will shape this route around the two of you.

CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
