Journey notes
Why this route works
What is a Nepal family holiday package?
A Nepal family holiday package is a fixed international itinerary with hotels, transfers and guided activities arranged for mixed-age groups from India. This one is land only, so you book your own flights into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu.
The route uses two bases. Chitwan covers three nights of wildlife activities, and Kathmandu covers four nights of heritage sightseeing and one open day. Hotels are Standard 3-4 star category, and rooms are on twin sharing. For a family of four, this usually means two rooms or one family room, which we confirm at booking.
What does this Nepal trip cover in Chitwan and Kathmandu?
The trip covers jungle safari and canoe wildlife viewing in Chitwan, then Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath. Chitwan National Park is listed by the Nepal Tourism Board as a destination for jungle safaris and wildlife viewing.
Here is the trip at a glance:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Duration | 7 nights / 8 days |
| Bases | Chitwan (3 nights), Kathmandu (4 nights) |
| Price | Rs.28,000 per person, land only, twin sharing |
| Hotel category | Standard 3-4 star |
| Main activities | Jeep safari, dugout canoe ride, jungle walk, Tharu cultural evening, Kathmandu heritage sites |
| Road transfers | About 5 hours each way between Kathmandu and Chitwan |
| Flights from India | Not included; Delhi to Kathmandu is about 1 hour 45 minutes |
When is the best time to visit Nepal from India for this route?
October to March works best for Chitwan and Kathmandu. October and November have low rain and clear skies but high crowds and peak prices, so book hotels and safari slots early.
December to February is cooler, especially on Kathmandu mornings, and crowds are lower. April brings peak prices and crowds, and the Terai gets warmer. June to August is heavy monsoon, with muddy trails, swollen rivers and possible road closures, so most families avoid it. Low cloud can also delay flights in the monsoon.
What does this Nepal trip cost for a family?
The package costs Rs.28,000 per person on twin sharing, land only, as of 2026. Flights, entry formalities, personal expenses and meals not listed in the plan are extra.
Three things move the final figure: hotel category, travel dates and how you travel between cities. Peak months such as October, November and April cost more. The same Chitwan and Kathmandu route in a Budget 3-star category is indicatively around Rs.21,000 per person, and a Premium 5-star version around Rs.45,000. These tiers are for comparison only, and the price you pay depends on dates and room type. You can browse more Nepal tour packages to compare.
Why does this route work for kids and grandparents?
Two bases mean only two long drives in eight days. Safari activities run in fixed morning and late-afternoon slots, which leaves proper gaps for lunch, naps and rest.
- Short, predictable transfers: Kathmandu and Chitwan are linked by a tourist-bus corridor, with a private vehicle for your group.
- Low-effort activities: jeep rides, canoe seating and flat park-edge walks need no fitness.
- Shared interest: children enjoy animals and the Tharu evening, and grandparents enjoy Boudhanath and Pashupatinath.
- Food: Indian vegetarian dishes are easy to find in Kathmandu and in Chitwan resort kitchens.
How easy is the daily pace with children and elders?
The pace is slow by design: one main activity in the morning, a rest window after lunch and an early dinner. Day 1 and Day 4 are the only long driving days.
- Kathmandu to Sauraha, Chitwan, takes about 5 hours by tourist bus, and a private car is similar with stops.
- Ask the driver for a tea break every 90 minutes to two hours.
- Day 3 and Day 7 are kept light, with a free afternoon on Day 3 and a free day on Day 7.
- Keep the first evening in Chitwan activity-free after the road transfer.
What are the highlights for each age group?
Each age group gets at least one activity built around it, and most are shared.
Younger children (under 10):
- Jeep safari with a naturalist, looking for deer, monkeys, birds and possibly rhino
- Dugout canoe ride on the river
- Tharu cultural evening with music and dance
Teenagers:
- Guided jungle walk along the park buffer zone
- Optional village cycle ride arranged locally in Chitwan
- Thamel shopping and street food walk in Kathmandu
Grandparents:
- Seated canoe ride and slow garden time at the Chitwan hotel
- Pashupatinath outer complex and the flat kora walk around Boudhanath
- Swayambhunath, with a vehicle drop close to the top to reduce steps
What are the room, meal and comfort options?
Hotels are Standard 3-4 star, with twin-sharing rooms as the base. Family rooms or connecting rooms depend on the hotel and dates, so confirm at booking.
Breakfast is included daily, and other meals follow the plan sent at booking. Vegetarian meals are widely available, and hotels can usually prepare Jain food if told in advance. Children's meals such as plain rice, dal, noodles and paratha are easy to request. Kathmandu mornings can be cold from November to February, so ask for extra blankets on arrival.
What should families know before travelling to Nepal with kids and elders?
Five checks cover most family problems: documents, clothing, mosquito protection, money and medicines.
- ID and age rules: carry a valid passport for each traveller, including infants, and a printed copy of each. Keep birth certificates handy for children.
- Weather gear: pack light layers and a warm jacket for Kathmandu mornings, and a rain jacket if travelling near monsoon months.
- Insect protection: use repellent on safari evenings and carry a small first-aid kit.
- Money: Nepal Rastra Bank lifted its ban on Indian INR 200 and INR 500 notes in July 2026, up to INR 25,000 per person in total. Cards and smaller notes are easier day to day.
- Medicines: carry regular prescriptions in original packs, plus ORS, paracetamol and motion-sickness tablets for the road transfers.
Where do we stay in Chitwan and Kathmandu?
You stay in Sauraha for Chitwan and in the Thamel or Durbar Marg area of Kathmandu. Chitwan is the base for park safaris and Tharu cultural activities, and Thamel is a central area with hotels, restaurants and shopping streets.
| Category | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.21,000 | Simple rooms, basic resort facilities, shorter walks to town |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.28,000 | Comfortable rooms, in-house restaurant, garden or pool in Chitwan |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.45,000 | Larger rooms, more facilities, better family-room availability |
These are indicative tiers derived from the listed price, and actual rates vary with dates. Hotel names are shared at booking.
What do Indian travellers need to know about entry, money and flights for Nepal?
Indian passport holders should check the Nepal immigration department's official portal for the current entry rule, and our Nepal visa for Indians page explains it for families. Check the official portal for the current fee, as we do not quote one here.
The local currency is the Nepalese rupee. Check an authorised exchange source on the day of travel rather than relying on a quoted rate. Delhi to Kathmandu is a direct flight of about 1 hour 45 minutes, as of October 2026. Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport is the arrival and departure point. FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
