Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Laos family tour package cover?
This trip covers 8 nights in Laos: 6 nights in Luang Prabang and 2 nights in Vientiane, with the Laos–China Railway linking the two. Sightseeing is kept to a morning and a light evening, so nobody is rushed.
- Days 1 to 6: Luang Prabang, with the Former Royal Palace, Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Visounnarath, Mount Phou Si and the Mekong riverfront
- Day 6: Train transfer to Vientiane
- Days 7 to 8: That Luang, Wat Sisaket, Patuxay, Hor Phra Keo and Buddha Park
- Day 9: Checkout and flight home from Wattay International Airport (VTE)
A free afternoon is built in every few days for naps, pool time or shopping.

Kid and elder logistics
Plan vehicles and rooms before you land, because Luang Prabang's lanes and temple sites suit short, repeated stops better than long days. Most movement is by private vehicle or tuk-tuk, and tuk-tuk fares should be agreed before boarding.
- Seating: a private vehicle is used for transfers, with grandparents seated up front and children behind. Share the family's size at booking so the right vehicle type is confirmed.
- Rooms: family or connecting rooms are subject to availability and should be requested at booking, to be confirmed at booking.
- Wheelchair and stroller access: Mount Phou Si is a climb of about 300 steps and is not suited to wheelchairs. Temple compounds and the Former Royal Palace grounds have steps and uneven paths, so a compact folding stroller works better than a large one.
- Longer drives: the Kuang Si Falls drive is about 45 to 60 minutes each way. Keep water, fruit and biscuits in the vehicle and ask the driver for a short stop if children feel unwell.
Why this route works for families
This route works because Luang Prabang is compact and the intercity leg is a short train ride, not a full-day road drive. Short distances protect nap times, early dinners and grandparents' energy.
- The Former Royal Palace and Wat Xieng Thong are both in the old town, so mornings need little travel.
- The Laos–China Railway connects Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, so the Luang Prabang to Vientiane leg avoids a long road transfer. The train costs about $15 to $25 per person for Vientiane to Luang Prabang, as of July 2026; the fare is not part of the package figure unless confirmed at booking.
- Mekong riverfront evenings in both cities give a flat, easy walk after dinner.
- Rice, noodles and vegetable dishes are widely available, which helps picky eaters and vegetarian families.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets at least one activity built for it, so the whole family is engaged at some point in the day.
Younger children (about 6 to 11)
- Short Mekong boat ride with life jackets
- Kuang Si Falls pools and lower trails
- Buddha Park in Vientiane, with its large statues
- Night market evening with an early dinner
Teenagers
- Mount Phou Si climb for views over the town and river
- Former Royal Palace museum
- Tuk-tuk rides and market browsing with a set budget
- Patuxay monument and city views in Vientiane
Grandparents
- Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Visounnarath at a slow pace
- Riverfront evening walks on level ground
- That Luang and Wat Sisaket in Vientiane
- Free afternoons for rest at the hotel
Pace, rest and daily rhythm
The daily rhythm is one main outing in the morning, a long lunch and rest, then a light evening. This keeps the day workable for a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old on the same trip.
- Mornings start around 8:30 to 9:00, when the weather is cooler.
- Rest windows of two to three hours follow lunch, especially in March and April when temperatures often cross 35 C.
- Evenings end with dinner by about 7:30 to 8:00.
- The longest drive is the Kuang Si Falls trip of about 45 to 60 minutes each way. The Buddha Park drive from Vientiane is about 45 minutes.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Hotels are standard 3-4 star properties, and families can ask for connecting or family-sized rooms, to be confirmed at booking. Breakfast is included daily, and the meals listed against each day are part of the plan.
Vegetarian meals are easy to find in Luang Prabang and Vientiane, and Jain meals need advance notice at booking. Children's food is simple to arrange, with rice, noodles, fried rice, eggs, fruit and plain bread widely available. Carry packaged snacks from India for the first two days, while the family settles in.
Travelling with kids and elders: five practical tips
These five tips cover health, weather, ID and local transport for a family trip to Laos.
- Pack light cotton clothes for daytime, plus a light jacket for December and January mornings, when Luang Prabang can drop to around 14 C.
- Carry hats, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. March to May can be very hot, sometimes approaching 40 C, so keep outdoor visits to the morning.
- Keep each traveller's passport, visa copy and a printed birth certificate for children in one pouch. Carry a few passport photos for any on-arrival paperwork.
- Agree tuk-tuk fares before boarding, since night fares can be higher. Short city rides cost about $2 to $5, as of April 2026.
- Carry regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit and insurance papers. Wet-season rain from May to October can disrupt roads and outdoor plans.
Where you will sleep in Luang Prabang and Vientiane
Stays are in standard 3-4 star hotels in central Luang Prabang and central Vientiane, chosen so that temples, the riverfront and restaurants are close. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage city with waterfalls, temples and a night market, and it is a good base for couples and families alike.
The indicative tiers below are per person and are for context only. Final rates depend on dates and room type, so confirm at booking.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.70,000 | Simple rooms, central location, basic breakfast |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.93,500 | Comfortable rooms, family or connecting options, daily breakfast |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.1,49,500 | Larger rooms, better facilities, usually a pool and on-site dining |
No hotel brand names are quoted here. The hotel for each night is confirmed in your final voucher.
Visa, money and flights for Indian passport holders going to Laos
Indian passport holders need to confirm the Laos visa route before travel. Check the official Laos e-visa portal and the Lao embassy for the current type and fee, since rules and costs can change. Laos has also introduced a digital arrival and departure card at four international checkpoints, as of August 2026, so complete it as instructed on arrival.
The local currency is the Lao kip (₭), and we do not quote an exchange rate here. Carry some US dollars and local cash for tuk-tuks and markets. Flights from India usually connect through a regional hub, so flight time depends on the city and the connection. Check fares and total duration at the time of booking.
Best time to visit Laos from India
The best time to visit Laos from India is the cool dry season, from November to April. Skies are clearer, humidity is lower and rainfall is limited, which suits older travellers and young children.
- December and January: coolest, about 14 to 27 C, with very little rain, but peak prices.
- February and March: warmer, with a clear sky and medium crowds.
- April: hot, often around 34 C, with peak prices.
- May to October: wet monsoon, with the heaviest rain in August and September. Prices are lower, but roads and boat schedules can be disrupted.
What affects your Laos trip cost
This package is Rs.93,500 per person on twin sharing, land only. The final cost for a family moves with hotel category, room type, travel dates and the number of children sharing rooms.
- Peak months of November, December and April raise hotel rates.
- Adding extra excursions or private transfers raises the land cost.
- Flights, the visa fee, insurance and meals not listed are extra.

CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
