Journey notes
Why this route works
What is an Iceland family holiday package?
An Iceland family holiday package is a fixed international itinerary that bundles hotels, transfers and sightseeing for children and elders travelling together. This one covers eight days and seven nights across Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the South Coast, with whale watching and the Golden Circle as the fixed points.
Iceland family tour package from India: how the route runs
This trip starts with two nights in Reykjavik, then moves along the Golden Circle with a stay in the Selfoss, Laugarvatn, Fludir or Hella belt. Two nights on the South Coast follow, and the last stretch is back in the capital. Keflavik International Airport is about 45 minutes from Reykjavik.
The longest road day is the Golden Circle loop, and the other drives are short hops. One free afternoon or morning is placed every few days, which is the part families value most. Read the day-by-day plan below for timings and stops.
Day-by-day plan in brief
The eight days follow a simple pattern: arrive and rest, see the city and whales, do the Golden Circle, move south, do the waterfalls, return to the capital and fly home. Full morning, afternoon and evening details sit in the itinerary section of this page, with meals and overnight stay category for each day.
What is included and excluded in the price?
The Rs.97,000 per person price covers hotels, daily breakfast, airport transfers, the whale watching trip and the two sightseeing days by road. Flights, visa charges, insurance and most lunches and dinners are outside it. Anything we cannot confirm today is marked as to be confirmed at booking, and the full lists sit in the inclusions and exclusions sections.
Kid and elder logistics on this route
Seating and room planning decide whether a family trip stays calm. Ask for a vehicle with a child seat or booster if any child is under 12, and keep the front seat free for a grandparent who gets carsick.
- Request family or connecting rooms at booking. Room types vary by hotel, so confirm the layout in writing.
- Stroller use is easy in Reykjavik's central area. On gravel paths at Thingvellir and the waterfalls, a baby carrier works better.
- Plan a rest or snack stop roughly every 60 to 90 minutes on the Golden Circle and South Coast days.
- Carry water, fruit and packed snacks from Reykjavik, as roadside food options between sights are limited.
- Viewpoints at Gullfoss and Geysir can be enjoyed at a slower pace by elders while others walk further.
Why this route works for families
The Golden Circle is the easiest big-sight circuit in Iceland, and the South Coast has several attractions that are easy to reach. Guide to Iceland lists both routes as suitable for family and senior sightseeing.
- Short transfers: most drives between stops are short, and the long day is split with stops.
- Shared activities: geysirs, waterfalls and whales hold the interest of both a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old.
- Food: hotel breakfasts are included, and Reykjavik cafes and restaurants serve a range of dishes for fussy eaters.
- Compact capital: Hallgrimskirkja Church and Harpa Concert Hall sit in the central area, and the layout suits walking and guided tours.
Highlights by age group
Different ages enjoy different stops on this route, so each family member has a day they look forward to.
Younger children
- Whale watching boat trip from Reykjavik harbour.
- Erupting geysers at the Geysir geothermal area.
- Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, two roadside waterfalls with short walks.
Teenagers
- Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a marked path into the rift valley.
- Reynisfjara black-sand beach, for photos from a safe distance.
- Views of Solheimajokull and Vatnajokull glaciers from the South Coast.
Grandparents
- Gullfoss Waterfall viewpoints at an unhurried pace.
- Reykjavik walking, with Hallgrimskirkja Church and Harpa Concert Hall close together.
- Two free half-days for rest at the hotel.
Pace, rest and logistics
The daily rhythm is a late breakfast, one main sightseeing block, a proper lunch and an early dinner. Most days involve one to three hours of road time, with the Golden Circle loop being the longest.
- Rest windows are built in on Day 4 morning, Day 6 afternoon and the whole of Day 7.
- The Golden Circle day has a lunch break between Geysir and Gullfoss.
- Children handle the drives better with a snack and a charged tablet, as the scenery is steady but the distances add up.
- Check road and weather conditions before every drive, as official guidance advises.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Hotels are in the Standard 3-4 star band, with twin-sharing rooms as the base and family rooms on request. Connecting rooms are not guaranteed everywhere, so we confirm layouts at booking.
Breakfast is included and usually has bread, eggs, fruit, cereal and yoghurt. Vegetarian dishes are easy to find in Reykjavik, while Jain food is harder to arrange outside the capital. Share dietary needs at booking and we will brief the hotels. Fresh seafood and Icelandic specialities are available in Reykjavik for families who want to try local food.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips
Weather, footwear and planning matter more than anything else on this trip.
- Pack layers and a waterproof outer shell instead of one heavy coat, as weather changes within a day even in July.
- Carry each traveller's passport, and keep copies of children's birth certificates and the Schengen visa documents for hotel and border checks.
- Choose shoes with grip. Paths at waterfalls and Thingvellir can be wet and uneven.
- Keep children well back from the water at Reynisfjara and hold hands near waterfalls.
- Bring regular medicines in original packs with an English prescription, and buy travel insurance before departure.
Where you stay: Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the South Coast
This trip uses three bases: Reykjavik for the city and whale watching, the Golden Circle belt for the circuit, and the South Coast for waterfalls and the beach. Reykjavik works well for families as it has the most restaurants, shops and pharmacies. The Golden Circle belt of Selfoss, Laugarvatn, Fludir and Hella breaks the drive south, and Hvolsvollur and Vik give access to the waterfalls and Reynisfjara.
Indicative per-person prices, derived from the listed rate, vary by stay category.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person (land only, twin sharing) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.73,000 | Simple rooms, breakfast, fewer on-site facilities |
| Standard 3-4 star (this itinerary) | Rs.97,000 | Comfortable rooms, hotel breakfast, family rooms on request |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.1,55,000 | Larger rooms, more on-site dining and services |
Higher grades and family rooms change the per-person figure, so confirm the current band at booking. You can compare other routes on our Iceland tour packages page.
Entry, money and flights for Indian travellers to Iceland
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for Iceland, applied for through the official route listed in our Iceland visa for Indians guide. Check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, and apply well before your travel dates.
The local currency is the Icelandic krona, and cards are widely accepted, though we do not quote an exchange rate here. Flights from major Indian cities usually connect through a European hub, so total journey time depends on the routing and layover. Fares change by season, so confirm at booking. A proposed annual access fee for non-tax-resident adult visitors to Thingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir was reported on 28 September 2026. It is a proposal at the time of writing, so confirm at booking whether it affects your dates.
Best time to visit Iceland from India
June to August is the practical window for a family trip, because daylight is long and temperatures are the mildest of the year. As of 2026, the monthly climate data looks like this.
| Month | Temperature range | Rainfall | Crowds and prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 3.6 to 9.4 C | 43.8 mm | Medium |
| June | 6.7 to 11.7 C | 50.0 mm | High |
| July | 8.3 to 13.3 C | 51.8 mm | High |
| August | 7.9 to 13.0 C | 61.8 mm | High |
| September | 5.0 to 10.1 C | 66.5 mm | Medium |
Crowds and prices peak from June to August, so book rooms early. May and September are shoulder months with fewer visitors. October to April is darker and colder, with some seasonal road closures, which is harder going with small children.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
