Getting Around South Africa: Transport Guide for Indian Tourists
South Africa's transport network spans domestic flights, car rentals, intercity coaches, ride-hailing apps, and rapid rail. For Indian tourists figuring out how to get around South Africa, the choices depend on your route, budget, and comfort with left-hand traffic. This guide covers five main modes — domestic flights, self-drive, intercity buses, Uber/Bolt, and the Gautrain — with India-specific details on documents, costs, and safety.
How do Indian tourists typically get around South Africa?
Indian tourists in South Africa use a mix of domestic flights for long distances, car rentals for the Garden Route, intercity coaches for budget city-to-city travel, Uber or Bolt for city movement, and the Gautrain for the Johannesburg airport corridor. The right mode depends on whether the trip is safari-focused, city-based, or a road trip.
South Africa's transport network is large and spread across three main cities — Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban — with distances that make driving or flying necessary for most itineraries. The country drives on the left, which is the same as India, so the adjustment is manageable for most Indian drivers. However, roads outside cities can be long and poorly lit at night.
For safari trips, most operators include game reserve transfers. For city travel, Uber is the standard. For the Garden Route, a rental car gives the most flexibility. Intercity coaches work well for solo travellers on a tighter budget.
One document matters above all others for self-drive travel: an International Driving Permit. Without it, most car rental companies in South Africa will not hand over the keys, regardless of your Indian licence.

Can Indian tourists drive a car in South Africa, and what documents are needed?
Indian tourists can drive in South Africa with a valid Indian driving licence plus an International Driving Permit. The IDP must be carried alongside the original licence at all times. Most rental companies set a minimum age of 23. Left-hand traffic applies, which is the same as India.
What is an International Driving Permit and how do Indians get one?
An International Driving Permit is an official translation of your Indian driving licence, recognised in over 150 countries including South Africa. In India, the IDP is issued by the Automobile Association of India or your state's Regional Transport Office. The process takes 1–3 working days and costs approximately INR 500–800. You need your original licence, a passport-size photo, and a valid passport copy.
Which car rental companies operate at South African airports?
Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, and Thrifty all operate at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport. Most require a credit card for the security deposit, which can range from ZAR 5,000 to ZAR 15,000 depending on the vehicle class. Debit cards are generally not accepted for deposits. Fuel type is unleaded 95 petrol, priced at approximately ZAR 22–24 per litre as of mid-2025. Toll roads on major routes accept cash or an e-tag device, which rental companies can provide for a daily fee.
According to the World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Road Safety, South Africa records approximately 25 road deaths per 100,000 population annually — one of the higher rates globally. Indian tourists should avoid driving after dark on rural roads and plan overnight stops accordingly.
The Garden Route, running approximately 800 km from Cape Town to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), is the most popular self-drive route among Indian tourists. Roads are well-maintained and signposted in English.

Which intercity transport options connect South Africa's major cities?
Domestic flights, intercity coaches, the Baz Bus, and the Gautrain are the main options for travelling between South African cities. Domestic flights take 2 hours on the Johannesburg–Cape Town route. Coaches take 18–24 hours on the same route but cost a fraction of the airfare.
How do domestic flights compare to buses for the Johannesburg–Cape Town route?
FlySafair is a low-cost South African carrier operating the Johannesburg–Cape Town route from approximately ZAR 600–1,800 one way, depending on booking lead time. Kulula and Airlink cover additional routes including Durban, George, and Nelspruit. Booking 4–6 weeks in advance typically yields the lowest fares. The flight takes about 2 hours, making it the fastest option for the 1,400 km route.
Greyhound and Intercape are the two main intercity coach operators in South Africa. Greyhound connects Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth with overnight services. Intercape covers a wider network including smaller towns. Tickets start from ZAR 250 for shorter routes and reach ZAR 600–900 for Johannesburg–Cape Town overnight. FlixBus SA entered the market recently and offers competitive pricing on select routes.
What is Baz Bus and is it suitable for Indian travellers?
Baz Bus is a hop-on hop-off backpacker coach service connecting Cape Town and Johannesburg via the Garden Route and Drakensberg. A single-direction pass starts from approximately USD 180. Baz Bus drops passengers directly at hostels and guesthouses, which makes it convenient for solo travellers. It is not a daily service on all legs, so itinerary flexibility is needed.
| Transport Mode | Route Example | Approx. Fare (ZAR) | Journey Time | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic Flight (FlySafair / Kulula) | Johannesburg – Cape Town | 600 – 1,800 | ~2 hours | Time-conscious travellers, couples, families |
| Intercity Coach (Greyhound / Intercape) | Johannesburg – Cape Town | 600 – 900 | 18 – 24 hours | Budget travellers, solo tourists |
| Baz Bus (hop-on hop-off) | Cape Town – Johannesburg via Garden Route | ~3,300 (USD 180) | Multi-day, flexible | Backpackers, solo travellers with time |
| Gautrain (rapid rail) | OR Tambo Airport – Sandton | ~200 | ~15 minutes | Arriving passengers, Johannesburg city visitors |
| Self-Drive Car Rental | Cape Town – Gqeberha (Garden Route) | 500 – 1,200 per day | 2 – 5 days (flexible) | Families, couples, road trip itineraries |

Is it safe for Indian tourists to use public transport in South Africa?
Uber and Bolt are the safest public transport options for Indian tourists in South Africa's cities. Minibus taxis are widely used by locals but carry risks for visitors unfamiliar with routes. The MyCiTi bus in Cape Town is a safer formal alternative for daytime travel within the city.
Should Indian tourists use minibus taxis in South Africa?
Minibus taxis carry the majority of South African commuters daily and charge ZAR 10–25 per trip. They are cash-only, follow informal routes with no published timetables, and are often overcrowded. For first-time Indian visitors, minibus taxis are not recommended. The risk is not just safety — it is also getting lost or stranded in an unfamiliar area without data or local contacts.
How reliable is Uber or Bolt in Cape Town and Johannesburg?
Uber operates in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria. Bolt is available in the same cities and is often 10–20% cheaper than Uber for short trips. Both apps work with Indian debit and credit cards. Wait times in central areas are typically 3–8 minutes. At night, both apps are significantly safer than flagging any vehicle on the street. Always verify the driver's name, photo, and licence plate before getting in.
The MyCiTi bus is Cape Town's formal bus rapid transit system, operating on fixed routes with card-based payment. It connects the city centre, Waterfront, Sea Point, and the airport. It is reliable during daytime hours and costs ZAR 9–30 per trip depending on distance.

How much should Indian tourists budget for transport in South Africa?
Daily transport costs in South Africa range from ZAR 50 for a budget backpacker using coaches and shared taxis to ZAR 2,000 or more for a premium traveller using domestic flights and private transfers. The South African Rand (ZAR) trades at approximately 1 ZAR to 4.5 INR as of mid-2025.
How does the ZAR-to-INR exchange rate affect transport planning?
At 1 ZAR = 4.5 INR, a ZAR 200 Gautrain ticket costs approximately INR 900. A domestic flight at ZAR 1,200 equals roughly INR 5,400. A daily car rental at ZAR 700 works out to about INR 3,150. These figures help Indian travellers compare South Africa transport costs against what they would pay for similar distances in India or Southeast Asia.
Fuel costs approximately ZAR 22–24 per litre. A full tank for a standard sedan (50 litres) costs around ZAR 1,100–1,200, or approximately INR 5,000–5,400. An Uber from Cape Town city centre to the V&A Waterfront costs ZAR 60–100 depending on time of day.
| Traveller Profile | Preferred Transport Mode | Estimated Daily Transport Cost (ZAR) | Estimated Daily Transport Cost (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget backpacker | Intercity coach + MyCiTi bus + Bolt | 50 – 150 | 225 – 675 |
| Mid-range couple | Domestic flights + Uber | 400 – 800 | 1,800 – 3,600 |
| Family (4 pax) | Car rental + toll roads | 700 – 1,200 | 3,150 – 5,400 |
| Premium / Safari traveller | Private transfers + domestic flights | 1,500 – 3,000 | 6,750 – 13,500 |

What transport tips should Indian tourists know before arriving in South Africa?
Indian tourists should arrange their IDP, download Uber and Bolt before departure, carry ZAR cash for tolls and minibus situations, and book car rentals at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Airport transfer options at OR Tambo and Cape Town International vary widely in price and reliability.
Which apps should Indian tourists install before landing in South Africa?
OR Tambo International Airport is Johannesburg's main international airport and the entry point for most Indian travellers flying into South Africa. From OR Tambo, the Gautrain reaches Sandton in approximately 15 minutes for ZAR 200. This is the most reliable and affordable airport transfer option. Avoid unlicensed taxi touts inside the arrivals hall — they are common at OR Tambo and typically charge ZAR 600–1,000 for trips that cost ZAR 200 via Gautrain or ZAR 250–350 via Uber.
Install these apps before you land: Uber, Bolt, Google Maps (download South Africa offline maps), and Waze for driving. For a local SIM card, Vodacom and MTN both have airport counters at OR Tambo and Cape Town International. A data SIM with 10 GB costs approximately ZAR 150–200 and is essential for navigation and ride-hailing.
Carry ZAR 500–1,000 in cash from the time you land. Some toll booths on the N2 and N1 highways do not accept cards. Cash also helps if your phone runs out of data in a remote area.
