Getting Around Madhya Pradesh: Complete Transport Guide
Madhya Pradesh covers over 3,08,000 sq km, making it India's second-largest state by area. Tourist attractions — Khajuraho, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior — are spread across distances of 200 to 600 km from each other. Planning how to get around Madhya Pradesh is the part most travellers underestimate. This transport guide covers trains, buses, cabs, flights, and safari transfers so you can move between cities without losing days to poor connections.
What are the main ways to travel between cities in Madhya Pradesh?
Trains, state buses, private cabs, domestic flights, and self-drive are the five main transport modes in Madhya Pradesh. Trains cover most major cities. Buses reach every district. Cabs are essential for wildlife zones and Khajuraho. Flights save time on long corridors like Delhi to Indore.
The train network run by Indian Railways is the most reliable option for city-to-city travel. It connects Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Ujjain with frequent daily services.
Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) operates bus routes across all 52 districts. MPSRTC reaches towns and villages that trains do not serve.
Cab aggregators Ola and Uber operate in Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior. Outside these three cities, local operators and pre-booked outstation cabs are the practical choice.
Domestic flights connect Indore and Bhopal to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Khajuraho has its own airport with direct Delhi flights.
Self-drive rentals are available in Indore and Bhopal. Road quality varies significantly between national highways and rural forest roads.

How does the train network connect major tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh?
Indian Railways connects Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Ujjain through direct or single-change services. Khajuraho has no direct rail connection — the nearest useful railheads are Mahoba (63 km) and Satna (117 km), both requiring a road transfer. Jabalpur Junction is the gateway station for Kanha National Park.
The Bhopal–Indore corridor is served by multiple daily trains, including the Intercity Express. Journey time is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. Bhopal to Jabalpur takes around 5 hours on the Narmada Express or Mahakoshal Express.
Khajuraho has no direct rail connection from any major MP city. Travellers coming from Delhi take the Utkal Express to Mahoba, then hire a cab for the 63 km road stretch. From Varanasi or Prayagraj, Satna is the better railhead.
Jabalpur Junction serves as the base for reaching Kanha National Park. Kanha's Mukki gate is approximately 160 km from Jabalpur by road.
| MP Rail Route | Approx Journey Time | Notes for Tourists |
|---|---|---|
| Bhopal to Indore | 3.5–4 hours | Multiple daily trains; Intercity Express is fastest |
| Bhopal to Jabalpur | 5–5.5 hours | Mahakoshal Express; base for Marble Rocks and Kanha |
| Bhopal to Gwalior | 3–3.5 hours | Shatabdi and multiple expresses; good frequency |
| Gwalior to Jhansi (for Khajuraho) | 1 hour by train + 175 km road | Jhansi is the nearest major railhead for Khajuraho from north |
| Ujjain to Indore | 1–1.5 hours | Very frequent; Ujjain is 55 km from Indore |
| Satna to Khajuraho | Road only — 117 km, approx 2.5 hours | No train to Khajuraho town; cab or bus from Satna required |

When should you hire a private cab instead of taking a bus or train in Madhya Pradesh?
Private cab hire makes the most sense when your destination has no direct train, when you are travelling in a group of three or more, or when you need to reach a wildlife park buffer zone. Cabs are also the only practical option between Jhansi and Khajuraho, and between Bhopal and Pachmarhi.
Standard outstation cab rates in Madhya Pradesh run at INR 12–16 per km for a non-AC hatchback. AC sedans cost INR 14–18 per km. AC SUVs and Innova-class vehicles run at INR 18–22 per km on most MP corridors.
For groups of six to ten, a Tempo Traveller is the cost-effective choice. Tempo Traveller hire costs INR 3,000–6,000 per day depending on route distance and vehicle size.
Madhya Pradesh has a total road network of over 1,19,000 km, including national highways, state highways, and district roads, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. However, connectivity to forest and tribal belt destinations remains dependent on state and rural roads, where road quality drops significantly after the monsoon season.
Ola and Uber operate in Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior. In Jabalpur, app-based cabs are available but supply is inconsistent. In smaller towns like Mandla, Umaria, or Chhindwara, you will need a locally arranged cab or a pre-booked outstation vehicle.
Prepaid taxi counters at Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Gwalior airports offer fixed-rate transfers. These are the safest option on arrival if you have not pre-booked.

How reliable are MPSRTC buses for getting around Madhya Pradesh?
MPSRTC buses serve all 52 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including routes that trains do not cover. On major corridors like Bhopal–Indore and Bhopal–Jabalpur, buses run every 30 to 60 minutes. Reliability is reasonable on highway routes but drops on rural and forest-belt roads.
MPSRTC operates three service tiers. Ordinary buses are the cheapest but slow. Express buses skip smaller stops. MPSRTC Volvo services run on select high-demand routes like Bhopal–Indore and Indore–Ujjain, with AC seating and better punctuality.
Tickets can be booked at any MPSRTC bus stand or through the MPSRTC website. Bhopal ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal) is the main hub for long-distance MP routes.
Buses do not enter wildlife park core zones. For Kanha, Bandhavgarh, or Pench, you will need a cab or pre-arranged resort transfer from the nearest town.
| Route | Mode | Approx Fare (INR) | Journey Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bhopal to Indore | Train (Intercity Express) | 150–350 | 3.5–4 hours | Solo or couple travel |

Which airports serve Madhya Pradesh and how do you get from the airport to your hotel?
Madhya Pradesh has four functional airports for tourists: Indore (Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport), Bhopal (Raja Bhoj Airport), Jabalpur (Dumna Airport), and Khajuraho Airport. Indore handles the highest passenger volume with 20-plus domestic routes. All four airports have prepaid taxi counters at the arrivals exit.
Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore connects to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and several other cities. The airport sits 8 km from the city centre. Prepaid taxi fare to central Indore is approximately INR 300–400.
Bhopal Raja Bhoj Airport connects to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru with daily flights. The airport is 12 km from the city centre. Prepaid taxi fare to central Bhopal runs INR 400–550.
Khajuraho Airport receives direct flights from Delhi operated by IndiGo and Air India. This is the most convenient entry point for the temple circuit. The airport is 5 km from the main temple complex. No app-based cabs operate here; use the prepaid counter or a hotel pickup.
No MP city currently has a metro rail system. Auto-rickshaws are metered in Bhopal and Indore and are the standard last-mile option from taxi drop points.
How do you reach and get around Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench National Parks?
Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench national parks are accessible only by road from their nearest railheads. Private vehicles are not permitted inside core forest zones. Only registered jeeps with licensed guides can enter the core area. Buffer zone access has slightly relaxed rules but still requires a booked vehicle.
For Kanha National Park, Jabalpur Junction is the nearest major railhead at 160 km from Mukki gate and 175 km from Khatia gate. Nagpur airport is an alternative entry point at approximately 200 km from Khatia gate.
Bandhavgarh National Park is closest to Umaria station on the Bilaspur–Katni rail line. Umaria station sits 35 km from Tala gate, which is the main entry point. Cab hire from Umaria costs approximately INR 600–800 one way.
Pench National Park straddles the MP–Maharashtra border. Nagpur airport is the most practical entry point at 90 km from Turiya gate. From Jabalpur, the drive is approximately 250 km.
Registered jeep with a licensed guide is mandatory for all core zone safaris. The Madhya Pradesh Forest Department manages jeep allocation through its online booking portal. Slots fill quickly in peak season (October to March).

Is self-driving a practical option for touring Madhya Pradesh?
Self-driving works well on specific MP circuits but is not practical for the full state. National highway corridors like NH-46 and NH-44 are in good condition. State highways and rural roads, especially in the forest belt, deteriorate significantly after the monsoon season (July to September).
Self-drive car rentals are available in Indore and Bhopal through national operators. Availability in other MP cities is limited. Fuel stations are sparse in the tribal belt between Mandla and Balaghat districts.
Recommended self-drive routes include the Bhopal–Sanchi–Vidisha loop (90 km round trip), Indore–Mandu road (98 km, well-maintained), and Indore–Omkareshwar (77 km on NH-52).
Avoid self-driving on the Panna–Khajuraho stretch after dark. The road passes through forest areas with poor lighting and wildlife crossing zones. Forest roads in Kanha and Pench buffer zones are not suitable for standard hatchbacks after heavy rain.
