Journey notes
Why this route works
What is a Sikkim family package?
A Sikkim family package is a land-only domestic holiday where hotels, a private vehicle and sightseeing are fixed in advance. This one runs 6 nights across Gangtok and Namchi, with Rumtek Monastery as the main cultural stop and lighter sightseeing on most days.
The price is Rs.25,000 per person on twin sharing, with flights excluded. Hotels are Standard 3-4 Star. Mornings start late, dinners are early, and two afternoons are kept free so toddlers can nap and elders can rest. If you want to compare other routes first, see our Sikkim tour packages.
How does a Sikkim family tour package from this route work?
You land at Bagdogra Airport or reach New Jalpaiguri station, drive about 124 km to Gangtok, and use it as a base for two nights of local sightseeing. A move to Namchi follows, then a return to Gangtok before departure.
- Gangtok, 3 nights in total: Rumtek Monastery and local sights, with a rest afternoon.
- Namchi, 2 nights: hill-top religious complex, viewpoints and the town market.
- Transfers: one private vehicle, with a break every 1.5 to 2 hours on longer drives.
- Pace: two sightseeing stops a day at most, and one free afternoon every few days.
Inclusions and exclusions
The land package covers hotels, a private vehicle, listed sightseeing and breakfast and dinner. Flights, train fares, lunches and entry tickets are extra. The full lists are shown in the inclusions and exclusions sections of this page, and anything we cannot confirm today is marked to be confirmed at booking.
Kid and elder logistics
Families travel in one private vehicle, and the driver stops every 1.5 to 2 hours on longer drives. Ask for front-row or aisle seating for elders and for children prone to motion sickness. Room requests such as ground-floor or lift-access rooms are noted at booking.
- Rumtek's courtyard and the Namchi complex have paved paths and seating, but some steps remain, so a folding stroller is easier than a heavy one.
- Wheelchair access varies by hotel and sight; confirm at booking.
- Carry biscuits, fruit and water for the 4 to 5 hour Bagdogra to Gangtok drive, since roadside food varies.
Why this works for families
The route keeps transfers short, sightseeing light and meals predictable, which is what children and grandparents both need. Most sights sit close to the road, and nothing on the plan needs a trek or a permit-heavy high-altitude drive.
Rumtek is a morning visit that leaves the afternoon free. Namchi is a calmer hill town than Gangtok, so evenings are quiet. Hotel dinners are early, and a free afternoon every few days gives toddlers a nap and elders a rest.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets something suited to its pace. Here is how the plan breaks down.
Younger children
- Open courtyard at Rumtek Monastery with prayer flags and colourful murals
- Optional Tsomgo Lake day trip with yak and mule rides, if everyone is keeping well
- Free afternoons for naps and hotel play time
Teenagers
- Viewpoints and the large statue complex at Namchi for photos
- Market browsing in Gangtok and Namchi for woollens and souvenirs
- Ropeway ride in Namchi, if running (confirm at booking)
Grandparents
- Monastery visits that give a calm, spiritual morning without a trek
- Short drives with comfort breaks and seating at main sights
- Early dinners and unhurried check-ins
Pace, rest and logistics
The daily rhythm is a late breakfast, one main outing, a long lunch and rest, and an early dinner. Drives rarely cross 2 hours except on arrival, transfer and departure days.
- Day 1 and Day 7 are the longest, at about 4 to 5 hours by road for the 124 km between Bagdogra and Gangtok.
- Day 4 and Day 6 are transfer days between Gangtok and Namchi; confirm drive times with your coordinator, as traffic varies.
- Days 3 and 5 keep a free afternoon for naps and rest.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Standard 3-4 Star hotels in Gangtok and Namchi usually offer family rooms or an extra bed; connecting rooms depend on availability, so confirm at booking. Breakfast and dinner are included, and lunch is paid on the day.
Vegetarian food is easy to find in both towns, and plain dishes such as rice, dal, rotis and noodles suit children. Jain meals can usually be arranged with advance notice. Hot water, heating and room services vary by hotel, so ask about them when you enquire.
Travelling with kids and elders
Hill roads and changing weather call for some preparation. These five tips cover most of it.
- Carry valid photo ID for every traveller, including children, and keep copies handy.
- Pack warm layers, a light rain jacket and non-slip shoes even in spring, since evenings turn cold quickly.
- Bring motion-sickness tablets and regular medicines in your hand luggage, as roads wind through the hills.
- Avoid mid-June to September, when heavy rain and landslides can delay transfers.
- Download offline maps and save your driver's and coordinator's numbers, as mobile coverage can be patchy in the hills.
Where families stay in Gangtok and Namchi
Stays are Standard 3-4 Star hotels in Gangtok and Namchi, chosen for easy road access and family-friendly rooms. Hotel names are confirmed at booking, and no brand is promised here.
| Tier | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.19,000 | Clean, basic rooms, simple meals, fewer extras |
| Standard 4-star (this package) | Rs.25,000 | Comfortable rooms, in-house restaurant, better views and services |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.40,000 | Larger rooms, wider facilities, more spacious family options |
These tiers are indicative and vary by season. Peak months such as April, May, October and December usually cost more, while June to September is cheaper. Child rates and extra beds depend on the hotel, so confirm them at booking.
Getting to Sikkim and moving around
Most families fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in West Bengal or take a train to New Jalpaiguri, then drive about 124 to 125 km to Gangtok in roughly 4 to 5 hours. Pakyong Airport (PYG) is about 30 km from Gangtok, but flights vary, so confirm at booking. Sikkim has no working railway.
Road travel is the norm, and heavy rain from mid-June to September can cause landslides and delays. Mobile signal can drop on hill stretches. This route avoids North Sikkim and high passes, so special permits are not expected, but confirm at booking.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
