Package overview
The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 5-night journey through Sikkim— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
Why does this Sikkim honeymoon route suit couples?
This route keeps the driving short and the pace slow, so most days start after a proper breakfast. Gangtok is about 124 km from Bagdogra Airport and 125 km from New Jalpaiguri railway station, and after that transfer you unpack once and stay put for four nights.
Tsomgo Lake in East Sikkim is the anchor of the trip, with Baba Mandir on the same road. Everything else is built around it: an easy sightseeing day before, a free day after and a quiet last night so you are not rushing to the airport straight from the lake.
MG Marg, Gangtok's pedestrian promenade, handles the evenings. It is flat and traffic-free, so a long walk, a coffee and dinner can all happen without a vehicle. Travellers comparing routes can look at our Sikkim tour packages to see how this plan differs from longer trips with North or West Sikkim added.
Which moments are worth planning around?
Four moments shape this itinerary, and each has a best day on the route so the timing works for both of you.
- First evening on MG Marg (Day 1): arrive tired, walk the promenade for an hour and eat close to the hotel. Keep it light after the 4-5 hour drive.
- Early morning at Tsomgo Lake (Day 3): leave Gangtok at first light. The lake is usually clearer in the morning, and cloud tends to build later in the day.
- A private dinner (Day 4): the free day is the best slot, because nothing is scheduled before or after it. Confirm availability and cost at booking.
- Sunset from the hill stay (Day 5): the last night is slower, with the afternoon free and sunset as the main plan if the sky is clear.
What makes this trip good for couples specifically?
Three things set it apart from a standard group-style Sikkim holiday: privacy, setting and pace. Transfers and sightseeing are by private vehicle, so you are not sharing a seat or waiting for strangers.
- Privacy: the Tsomgo Lake day runs on your own timing. You can stay longer at the lake or skip the rides without anyone else's schedule to follow.
- Setting: Gangtok gives you cafes, shopping and evening walks, while the lake and viewpoints give you open mountain air within a few hours of the hotel.
- Pace: only one day, Day 3, involves an early start and a long excursion. The rest are short drives, late breakfasts and free time.
Which romantic highlights are built into the plan?
Six experiences give the trip its romantic shape. Each is tied to a place on the route, and the add-on ones depend on your dates, so confirm them at booking.
- MG Marg evening walks: a pedestrian-only promenade with cafes and shops, easy for two and open well into the evening.
- Tsomgo Lake morning: views over the lake from the shore, with tea stalls close by for a warm drink.
- Yak or mule ride at the lake: optional rides on decorated animals at the lake site, paid locally on the spot.
- Baba Mandir stop: a short halt on the same road, usually done after the lake if weather and permits allow.
- Private dinner on the free day: an optional add-on, arranged at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.
- Sunset on the final night: a slow evening at the hill stay, with no sightseeing scheduled and the view as the plan.
How do the days flow?
Only Day 3 starts early. Day 1 is a road transfer, Day 2 is a half-paced sightseeing day, Day 4 is entirely free and Day 5 is a short move with an open afternoon. Day 6 is a slow breakfast followed by the transfer out.
Plan on 4-5 hours for the road between Gangtok and Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri on both arrival and departure days. Keep a buffer before flights or trains on Day 6, because mountain roads can slow down with rain or traffic.
Free time is deliberate. Use it for sleeping in, a spa session, a long lunch or shopping on MG Marg. Nothing on Days 4 and 5 is fixed, so you can swap them if the weather favours one day over the other.
How should you choose the stay style?
For couples, view, privacy and access matter more than star rating. In Gangtok, a room with a valley view or a quieter lane is worth asking for, and being within walking distance of MG Marg saves you taxi rides in the evening.
For the last night, a hill property outside the city trades convenience for quiet. Ask whether the room has a balcony or window facing the mountains, and whether the property has a restaurant on site, since options nearby may be limited after dark.
Hotel names are confirmed at booking according to availability on your dates. Standard 3-4 star rooms are twin-sharing, and honeymoon room decoration can usually be requested in advance.
What is the best time to visit Sikkim for a couple's trip?
October to December and March to April are the most reliable months for this route. Skies are clearer, mountain views are better and roads are more stable, though these are also peak price months.
| Season | Months | What to expect on this route |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to May | Mild, clearer weather with flowering landscapes; demand is high and prices are at peak |
| Monsoon | June to September | Rainy and misty with slower travel; landslides and poor roads can affect the Tsomgo Lake route; prices are lower |
| Autumn | October to November | Cool and clearer, with improved mountain visibility; crowds are medium and prices are at peak |
| Winter | December to February | Cold, with snow possible at higher elevations; pack for near-freezing mornings |
Sikkim sees its heaviest rain from May to early October, and July is usually the wettest month, according to the Government of Sikkim tourism department. If you travel in the monsoon, keep a buffer day for road delays.
Which add-ons are worth considering?
Four add-ons suit this route, and each fits a particular day. All are optional and priced separately, so ask for a quote when you send your dates.
- Private dinner: best on Day 4, the free day, when nothing else is scheduled. It adds a set-menu dinner at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.
- Spa session: also suited to Day 4 or the afternoon of Day 5. Availability depends on the property.
- Photographer: a few hours on MG Marg or at the lake works best in the morning light. Book in advance during peak months.
- Room decoration or cake: simple to arrange on Day 1 or the last night. Share the request when you book.
Where do you stay on this Sikkim trip?
This plan uses standard 3-4 star hotels, with four nights in Gangtok and one night at a quieter hill stay close to the city. Gangtok is the base because it has the widest choice of rooms and the easiest access to MG Marg and the Tsomgo Lake road.
Indicative price tiers per person for context are below. The Rs.24,000 standard tier is the listed price for this package; other tiers are approximate and confirmed at booking.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What it means for a couple |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.18,000 | Clean, simple rooms with basic views; usually further from MG Marg |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.24,000 | Comfortable twin-sharing rooms, better location, hotel dinner included |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.38,500 | Larger rooms, better views and in-house dining and spa |
The cost of a trip like this moves with room category, travel month, vehicle type and add-ons. Peak months, March to May and October to December, are priced higher than the monsoon.
How do you reach Sikkim, and what should you know before you go?
Sikkim has no working railway, so most couples fly into Bagdogra Airport or take a train to New Jalpaiguri, both in West Bengal, and then drive to Gangtok. The road is about 124-125 km and takes roughly 4-5 hours.
Pakyong Airport, about 30 km from Gangtok, is the other air option. Delhi to New Jalpaiguri by train takes about 24 hours and Kolkata about 11 hours, as of July 2026. The permit for Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula is Rs.200 per person as per current tariff, arranged through the operator, so carry a government photo ID. Mobile connectivity can be patchy outside Gangtok, so download offline maps before you leave the city. Heavy rain and landslides can affect roads from mid-June through September, and snowfall can affect high routes in winter. Confirm road status at booking.
If you want to extend or change the route, our Sikkim holiday packages show other options built on the same access points.

CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
