A closer look at this 7-night journey through Munnar— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What is a Munnar family tour package?
A Munnar family tour package is a pre-planned hill-station holiday in Kerala's Idukki district that fixes the stay, road transfers and daily sightseeing for a group with children and elders. This version keeps drives short and leaves a free afternoon every few days.
Munnar sits at about 1,500 to 2,500 metres in the Western Ghats, bordered by the Anamalai and Cardamom Hills. The plan spends seven nights in Munnar town and the plantation belt. Two anchors hold it together: a walk inside Eravikulam National Park, home to the Nilgiri Tahr, and a stop at Echo Point, which children enjoy for the call-back effect.
Is Munnar a good fit for a family holiday ?
Yes. Munnar is reachable by road from Kochi, sightseeing distances are short, and most hotels serve vegetarian South Indian food. Winding roads and cold mornings are the main limits, and both are manageable with simple planning.
Around the two anchors sit a guided tea factory tour, boating at Mattupetty Lake, Top Station and two roadside waterfalls. Every outing is a morning or an afternoon, never both stretched long.
Why this plan works for families
This plan works for families because no single day asks children or elders to do more than a morning outing and a lighter afternoon one. Most drives stay under an hour, dinners are early, and every third afternoon is kept free.
- Short transfers: Mattupetty and Echo Point are done as one easy day, not stretched across several.
- Shared activities: boating, the tea factory and the waterfalls work for all ages together, so the group does not split up.
- Easy access: Lakkom Waterfalls is reachable from the roadside, which helps grandparents.
- Food: South Indian vegetarian meals are easy to find in Munnar town, and Jain requests can be passed to the hotel in advance.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets at least one outing built around its pace. Here is how the plan splits.
Younger children
- Boat ride at Mattupetty Lake
- Call-back game at Echo Point
- Spotting Nilgiri Tahr on the Eravikulam walk
Teenagers
- The 2 to 3 hour walking route inside Eravikulam National Park
- Early morning view from Top Station
- Guided tea factory tour, to see how leaf becomes tea
Grandparents
- Lakkom Waterfalls, reachable from the roadside
- Tea garden viewing without long climbs
- Free afternoons for rest at the hotel
Daily pace, rest and driving time
The daily rhythm is one main outing in the morning, lunch, then either a lighter stop or free time. Most drives are under an hour, and the longest are the arrival and departure transfers between Kochi and Munnar, about 4 hours each.
Breakfast is relaxed, outings start by 9 or 10 am except on Eravikulam and Top Station days, and the group is back at the hotel by about 5 pm. Rest windows after lunch suit young children and elders. Private vehicles are not allowed inside Eravikulam, so that day is on foot, and the walk can be cut short at any point.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Families can ask for a family room or two connecting rooms at the hotel, subject to availability and confirmed at booking. Ground-floor or low-step rooms can be requested for grandparents.
Breakfast and dinner are at the hotel, with vegetarian and child-friendly options such as plain rice, dosa, idli and dal. Jain meals without onion or garlic can usually be arranged if requested a day ahead. Lunches are in town and are not included.
Tips for travelling with kids and elders
Plan for cold mornings, winding roads and early park entry, and carry basic medicines. These five tips cover most of what families ask about.
- Carry warm layers. Mornings and evenings are cold even in summer, and Top Station and Eravikulam are colder still.
- Handle motion sickness early. The ghat road has many bends, so give a tablet before leaving Kochi, not halfway.
- Carry ID for everyone. Keep original or digital ID for adults and age proof for children for hotel check-in and park entry.
- Book park slots in advance. Eravikulam entry can be booked online, and the park advises arranging facilities well ahead. Entry runs 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
- Check the park calendar. Eravikulam may close during the calving period, usually around February and March.
Where do families stay in Munnar?
This package uses a standard 3-4 star hotel or resort in Munnar town or the plantation belt, chosen for easy road access. Munnar town is the most convenient base for families, with restaurants and pharmacies close by.
Quieter areas outside town, such as Devikolam, Pothamedu and Chinnakanal, offer valley or waterfall views but add drive time. The tiers below are indicative, per person, and depend on dates and room type.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.22,000 | Simpler rooms, fewer facilities |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.29,000 | Default category, twin sharing |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.46,500 | Larger rooms, better views, more facilities |
Getting to Munnar by road, rail or air
Munnar has no airport or railway station, so you fly or take a train to Kochi or Aluva and continue by road. Kochi to Munnar takes about 4 hours via Adimali, and Aluva Railway Station is about 110 km away.
From Delhi, Bengaluru or Kolkata, the usual route is a flight to Kochi followed by the drive up. Heavy monsoon rain, mainly in June and July, can cause landslides and close the Kochi-Munnar road. A Munnar tourist entry fee and e-pass system were reported as planned for July 2026, so confirm the rules at booking. Mobile coverage is generally available in town but can drop on hill stretches.
Best time to visit Munnar, and what the trip costs
The best time to visit Munnar is October to February, when it is cool, misty and comparatively dry. January and February are the busiest months, with hotel rates at their peak, so book early for those dates.
| Season | Months | Temperature and rain | What it means for families |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak winter | October to February | 14-26 C; rain 22 mm (January) to 254 mm (October) | Comfortable for all ages; crowds and prices are highest from December to February |
| Shoulder and pre-monsoon | March to May | 15-27 C; rain 44 mm in March rising to 160 mm in May | Warmer days, afternoon showers, moderate crowds |
| Southwest monsoon | June to September | 15-23 C; rain 210 mm to 398 mm | Fewer visitors and lower prices, but landslide and road-block risk, mainly in June and July |
The Munnar trip cost for this package is Rs.29,000 per person on twin sharing, land only, as of 2026. Flights, lunches and park tickets are extra. A child's extra bed, a valley-facing room or travel in the January to February peak will move the final number.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
