A closer look at this 6-night journey through Kashmir— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
Where does this Kashmir family holiday go?
This Kashmir holiday covers six nights across Srinagar and Pahalgam, with a shikara ride on Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens, Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. There is one long road transfer each way, and the other drives stay short.
Two nights go to Srinagar at the start, three to Pahalgam, and the last night is on a Dal Lake houseboat before the flight home. A free afternoon is built in on Day 2 and Day 5, so nobody is pushed through back-to-back sightseeing.
Why this route works for children and grandparents
Pahalgam is the main base because the sightseeing spots around it are close together. The road from Srinagar takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, and that is the longest transfer of the trip. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are visited by car with short walks, not treks.
That matters on a family trip. A child can nap in the car, a grandparent can stop for tea, and the afternoon can be cancelled without losing a major attraction. Compare this pace with other routes on the Kashmir tour packages hub if your group wants more adventure or a different focus.
Which months are best for a Kashmir trip with family?
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months for a family trip. Spring brings 18 to 28 C days and tulip season in Srinagar, while autumn brings cooler weather, chinar colours and lower crowds. This is the guide to the best time to visit Kashmir for mixed-age groups.
- April: about 18-22 C, tulip garden in bloom, medium crowds.
- May and June: about 25-32 C, peak demand and peak prices, so book rooms early.
- July and August: about 29-33 C with rain; heavy showers can cause landslides and road closures.
- September and October: about 18-28 C, lower crowds, steady roads.
- December to February: about 5-10 C; snow can close roads to higher areas and shorten daylight.
For young children and elders, spring and autumn are the safer windows.
What is the Kashmir trip cost for a family?
This package is priced at Rs.30,000 per person (2026), land only, on twin sharing with flights excluded. That is the Kashmir trip cost for standard 3-4 star stays on the plan below. Your final figure depends on room configuration, travel month and the number of travellers sharing a vehicle. Confirm at booking.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person (land only, twin sharing) |
|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | approx Rs.22,500 |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.30,000 |
| Premium 5-star | approx Rs.48,000 |
The Budget and Premium figures are indicative only, derived from the listed package price.
What do the kid and elder logistics look like?
A private car is used for every transfer, so seating, luggage and rest stops follow your family's pace. Ask for a vehicle with enough boot space if you carry a folding stroller or a wheelchair. Request ground-floor or lift-access rooms in advance, since many mid-range Kashmir properties have stairs.
On the Srinagar to Pahalgam drive, the driver stops for tea and washroom breaks, and a saffron-field stop at Pampore breaks up the road. Carry water, dry snacks and a light blanket in the car. The Betaab Valley and Aru Valley stops are flat walks near the road, but terrain at the meadows is uneven, so wheelchair users should confirm access at booking.

- Hazratbal Shrine on the Dal Lake shore, as an optional visit
Daily pace, rest windows and driving times
Each day has one main outing and one rest window. Mornings start after a relaxed breakfast, usually around 9 am, and dinner is early, by about 8 pm.
- Srinagar airport to the city: about 45 minutes.
- Srinagar to Pahalgam: about 3 to 3.5 hours, once on the way in and once on the way back.
- Pahalgam to Betaab Valley: about 15 minutes. Pahalgam to Aru Valley: about 30 minutes further. Pahalgam to Chandanwari: about 30 minutes.
Afternoons on Day 2 and Day 5 are left free for naps, shopping or a slow walk. Treat these as flexible, because rain or a tired child can change the plan on any day.
Rooms, meals and comfort for families
Standard 3-4 star hotels in Srinagar and Pahalgam usually offer family rooms or an extra bed for a child, and some can arrange connecting rooms. Ask for these at booking, since availability is tight in May and June. The Dal Lake houseboat night uses twin or triple cabins, so confirm the layout for your group.
Breakfast and dinner are included, while lunch is paid on the day. Vegetarian meals are available at most hotels, although local Kashmiri cooking, including Wazwan, is mostly meat-based. Plain rice, dal, rotis and boiled eggs are easy to arrange for fussy children. Jain meals can be requested in advance and are to be confirmed at booking.
Five tips for travelling to Kashmir with kids and elders
- Carry layers all year. Mornings in Pahalgam are cooler than Srinagar afternoons, and evenings drop quickly even in summer.
- Keep ID for every traveller. Carry an original Aadhaar or other government photo ID for adults, and a birth certificate or school ID for children, for hotel check-in and security checks.
- Keep medicines in hand luggage. Pack regular prescriptions, a basic first-aid kit and motion-sickness tablets for the winding Pahalgam road.
- Plan for weather. Heavy rain can trigger landslides and road closures, so keep a spare buffer day and check road status the evening before long drives.
- Book the shikara early. Early morning is calmer and queues are shorter, which helps with small children.
Where does the family stay in Srinagar and Pahalgam?
The family stays in standard 3-4 star hotels in Srinagar and Pahalgam, plus one night on a Dal Lake houseboat. Hotel names are confirmed after booking, and the category stays the same.
- Srinagar hotel (Days 1-2): a mid-range city hotel used as the base for gardens and the lake.
- Pahalgam resort (Days 3-5): a mid-range valley resort, close enough to the market for short evening walks.
- Dal Lake houseboat (Day 6): a standard houseboat with cabins, a deck and meals on board.
Getting to Kashmir: road, rail and flight access
Most families fly into Srinagar. Direct flights run from Delhi (about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes), Mumbai and Hyderabad (about 2.5 hours) and Bengaluru (about 2 hours 45 minutes, occasional direct), as of January 2026. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, completed in June 2025, now connects the Valley to the national rail network.
Srinagar airport had a runway-maintenance closure from 1 to 15 October, so check your flight dates against it. Mobile connectivity is generally available in Srinagar and Pahalgam town but can drop at Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. Confirm any permit or entry fee at booking.

FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
