The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 7-night journey through Germany— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
Romantic Road route: what the 8 days cover
The route runs from Wurzburg to Fussen, then adds Munich as the closing city. You cover it in 8 days with two longer drives of about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and the remaining legs are short hops of an hour or less.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the longest stay, two nights, so you see the old town after day visitors leave. Neuschwanstein Castle sits near Fussen and is entered on a timed slot. Munich closes the trip with one unscheduled day before the flight home.
Moments to plan around
Four moments give the trip its shape, and each has a best day on the route. Knowing them early helps you decide where to keep the schedule loose.
- First evening on the ramparts (Day 2): walk the medieval wall in Rothenburg at sunset, once the day crowds have gone.
- Slow morning in Rothenburg (Day 3): no drive, no fixed start. Coffee in the market square, then the evening watchman walk through the lanes.
- Castle day (Day 5): Neuschwanstein on a timed entry, with the walk up to the Marienbrucke viewpoint if the path is open.
- Signature dinner for two (Day 7): the unscheduled Munich day ends with a dinner the venue for which is confirmed at booking.
Why this suits couples
This route suits couples because it is private, small in scale and unhurried. You travel by car with a driver, stay in compact towns and have gaps built into most days.
- Privacy: a private car replaces the coach timetable, so you stop when you want within the day's plan.
- Setting: Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen are walkable in an hour or two, and they quieten after dark.
- Pace: only Day 1 and Day 6 involve a drive of more than an hour and a half, and Day 3 and Day 7 have no transfer at all.
Romantic highlights on the route
These are the six experiences that matter most on this itinerary, each tied to a named place.
- Wurzburg Residenz: the frescoed staircase and court garden, visited on the morning of Day 2.
- Rothenburg ramparts: a sunset walk along the medieval wall.
- Watchman tour: an evening walk through Rothenburg's old town lanes on Day 3.
- Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen: a covered-wall walk in one and the circular town layout in the other, both on Day 4.
- Neuschwanstein Castle: a timed interior visit and the Marienbrucke viewpoint on Day 5.
- Fussen old town: dinner and an evening walk beside the Lech river.
How the days flow
Most days start after breakfast with no early alarm, and the afternoons are kept light. Day 1 is arrival and rest, Day 3 and Day 7 have no transfer, and Day 8 is departure.
Drives are timed for the middle of the day, so you reach each town with daylight left for a walk. In June daylight lasts well past dinner, which suits sunset slots. In May and September the evenings are cooler and shorter, so carry a warm layer for the ramparts and castle approach. Keep Day 7 free of bookings. It is the one day to rest, shop or add an optional visit.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples the room setting matters more than star count. Look for a quiet street, a room away from the lift or lobby, and a short walk to the old town centre.
In Rothenburg, a hotel inside the walls saves you the walk back at night. In Fussen, a location near the old town keeps dinner easy. In Munich, a central hotel near Marienplatz works for a free day on foot. Ask for a double bed rather than two twins at booking, and confirm it in writing. Room views over a castle or town square are request-based and not guaranteed in this category.
Best months for a couple's trip
May, June and September are the best months for two. Daytime temperatures sit around 10-25 C, roads are clear and outdoor terraces are open.
| Month | Typical temperature | Crowds and prices | What it means for this trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | 0-15 C | Crowds low, prices medium | Quiet towns, but rain showers are common |
| May | 10-21 C | Crowds medium, prices medium | Comfortable for walking and driving |
| June to August | 15-25 C | Crowds high, prices peak | Longest days, busiest castle slots |
| September | 13-21 C | Crowds medium, prices medium | Cooler evenings, easier bookings |
| October | 4-13 C | Crowds medium, prices medium | Cold mornings, shorter days |
| December | -1 to 4 C | Crowds medium, prices peak | Christmas markets, but short daylight limits driving |
Add-ons worth considering
Four add-ons fit this route well, and each works best on a particular day. None is included in the base price.
- Private dinner or table setup: best on Day 3 in Rothenburg or Day 7 in Munich. Needs advance notice.
- Photographer: best on Day 2 at the ramparts or Day 5 near the castle approach. A short session at golden hour works well.
- Spa or sauna hour: suits the Munich free day. Availability depends on the hotel.
- Nymphenburg Palace or Alpine day trip: an optional use of Day 7 if you would rather not stay in the city.
Where you will sleep: three stay tiers
Stays are in Standard 3-4 star hotels on twin sharing, with indicative tiers below for context. These are per person and subject to dates and availability.
- Budget 3-star, about Rs.54,000: simpler rooms, usually a little outside the old town centres.
- Standard 4-star, Rs.72,000 (this package): central or near-central hotels in Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Augsburg, Fussen and Munich.
- Premium 5-star, about Rs.1,15,000: larger rooms and added services in the same cities, with availability that varies by season.
Hotel names are confirmed at booking and no specific property is promised on this page. In Rothenburg and Fussen the number of good small hotels is limited, so peak-month dates fill early.
Cost for two and what drives it
The base cost is Rs.72,000 per person, land only, on twin sharing, so double that figure for two travellers. Flights are excluded.
Travel month, room category and the number of private add-ons move the final quote the most. June to August and December are priced at peak. City tourist tax is charged separately in some places, for example 7.5% of the net room price in Berlin, and it is usually paid at the hotel, so confirm at booking which stops apply on your dates. Confirm current prices before you pay, and see the full range on our Germany tour packages page.
Entry, money and flights for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Germany, applied for through the official application route. Check the official portal for the current fee and appointment availability, and see our Germany visa for Indians guide for the document list.
The currency is the euro. Do not rely on a fixed rate, and check the day's rate with your bank or forex provider before you travel. Flights from major Indian cities to Frankfurt or Munich take roughly 17 to 19 hours including a stop, based on listed itineraries as of October 2026. Fares vary by date and are not included here.
Practical tips before you book
Book Neuschwanstein entry early, since timed tickets sell out in summer. Pack a warm layer even in June, because castle interiors and evenings stay cool.
Regional trains and buses are covered by the Deutschland-Ticket at €63 per month as of 2026, but ICE, IC and EC long-distance trains are not. This trip uses a private car, so you will not need it unless you add extra city days. English is used in most tourist settings, though a few German phrases help in smaller towns.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
