Sri Lanka Packing List for Indians: What to Pack & Carry
A complete Sri Lanka packing list for Indians — what to carry covers more than clothes and toiletries. Indian travelers need to account for the Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), two distinct monsoon zones, temple dress codes, and currency exchange before they leave home. Sri Lanka sits just 30 km from Tamil Nadu, but the entry requirements, climate, and customs rules differ enough to warrant a dedicated checklist. This guide covers documents, clothing, health items, electronics, and money — all from an India-specific angle.
What documents should Indians carry when travelling to Sri Lanka?
Indians travelling to Sri Lanka must carry a valid passport, a printed or digital Sri Lanka ETA, travel insurance documents, hotel booking confirmations, and a return flight ticket. The ETA is mandatory and must be obtained online before departure, not on arrival.
The Sri Lanka ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorization issued by the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration. Indian passport holders must apply online at eta.gov.lk before travel. The fee is USD 20 for a single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days.
Keep the ETA approval email printed and stored separately from your passport. Immigration officers at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport do ask for a physical copy at the counter.
Which documents to keep as physical copies vs. digital backups
- Physical copies (carry in hand luggage): ETA printout, passport photocopy (data page), travel insurance policy summary, hotel booking confirmations for first and last night
- Digital backups (email to yourself or store on Google Drive): Full passport scan, ETA approval, return flight e-ticket, forex card PIN and customer care number
- Keep the original passport and one photocopy in separate bags. If the original is lost, the photocopy speeds up the process at the Indian High Commission in Colombo.
Travel insurance is not mandatory for Sri Lanka entry, but it is strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from Sri Lanka to India can cost INR 3–5 lakh without cover.

What clothes should Indians pack for Sri Lanka's climate?
Indians should pack lightweight cotton or linen clothing for Sri Lanka's coastal areas, one warm layer for hill country nights, a rain poncho for monsoon months, and a full-coverage outfit for temple visits. Humidity averages 70–80% year-round across most of the island.
Sri Lanka has two monsoon zones. The Southwest monsoon runs from May to September and affects the west and south coasts, including Colombo, Mirissa, and Galle. The Northeast monsoon runs from October to January and affects the east coast, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay. Pack accordingly based on your travel dates and destinations.
The UV index in Sri Lanka regularly reaches 11–12. Sri Lanka sits at 7 degrees north of the equator, which means sun exposure is intense even on overcast days.
What to wear for beach destinations (Mirissa, Trincomalee, Negombo)
- Loose cotton shorts, linen trousers, or light cotton dresses work well in coastal heat.
- Swimwear is acceptable on the beach but not on the street or in restaurants.
- Carry a light cotton cover-up for moving between beach and town.
- Flip-flops are fine for the beach, but pack one pair of closed shoes for Sigiriya or any rock-climbing site.
What to wear for hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy)
- Nighttime temperatures in Ella and Nuwara Eliya drop to 12–15°C, especially between November and February.
- Pack one light fleece or full-sleeve sweatshirt. One is enough for a 7-night trip.
- The temple dress code at Kandy's Temple of the Tooth requires white clothing and covered shoulders and knees. Most other Buddhist and Hindu temples across Sri Lanka follow the same rule for shoulders and knees.
- Indian travelers familiar with domestic temple dress codes will find this straightforward. Carry one dedicated temple outfit.
Which toiletries and health items are essential for a Sri Lanka trip from India?
Indians should carry SPF 50+ sunscreen, DEET-based mosquito repellent, oral rehydration salts, antidiarrheal medication, antihistamines, and a 10-day buffer supply of any prescription medication. Sri Lankan pharmacies stock common medicines but may not carry Indian brand names.
SPF 50+ sunscreen is a non-negotiable item. The UV index in Sri Lanka reaches 11–12 on most clear days. Indian sunscreen brands like Lotus, Neutrogena, or Lakme SPF 50 are fine to carry and are not available at the same price in Sri Lanka.
Which medicines should Indians carry specifically for Sri Lanka travel
- 10-day buffer supply of all prescription medications — carry the original prescription in English, as customs may ask for it.
- Oral rehydration salts (Electral or similar) — heat and humidity cause dehydration faster than most travelers expect.
- Antidiarrheal tablets (Norflox or Imodium) — food hygiene standards vary outside Colombo and tourist hotels.
- Antihistamines — useful for insect bites, dust, or food reactions.
- DEET-based mosquito repellent (at least 30% DEET) — dengue is present in Sri Lanka, particularly in urban and coastal areas.
- Basic first aid: antiseptic cream, band-aids, and a digital thermometer.
Sri Lanka has pharmacies in Colombo and major towns, but stock of specific Indian generics is not guaranteed. Do not rely on buying medication after arrival.
What electronics and adapters do Indians need for Sri Lanka?
Indian Type D power plugs work in most Sri Lankan hotels without any adapter. Older properties may use Type G (UK standard) sockets, for which a Type G adapter is needed. A local Dialog SIM card costs around LKR 500 and is a practical alternative to Indian roaming packs.
The Type D plug is the standard three-round-pin plug used across India. Sri Lanka officially uses both Type D and Type G sockets. Most hotels built after 2000 have Type D sockets in rooms. Carry one Type G adapter as a backup, especially if staying in older guesthouses in Kandy or Galle.
| Item | India Compatibility with Sri Lanka | Recommendation for Indians |
|---|---|---|
| Type D power plug (Indian standard) | Works in most hotels and guesthouses | No adapter needed in majority of properties |
| Type G adapter (UK standard) | Required for older Sri Lankan properties | Carry one as backup; available at Colombo airport shops |
| Indian SIM card (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) | Roaming packs available for Sri Lanka | Airtel and Jio offer 7-day Sri Lanka roaming from INR 299–599 |
| Local SIM — Dialog or Mobitel | Available at Colombo airport on arrival | Dialog tourist SIM costs ~LKR 500; includes data and local calls |
| Power bank (under 20,000 mAh) | Allowed in cabin baggage only | Do not pack in check-in luggage; airline rule applies on all routes |
| Universal travel adapter | Covers both Type D and Type G | Useful if visiting multiple destinations with mixed socket types |
Should Indians buy a local SIM or use roaming in Sri Lanka?
A Dialog tourist SIM from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport costs approximately LKR 500 (around INR 135). The SIM includes a data pack and is activated immediately at the airport counter. This is cheaper than most Indian roaming packs for trips longer than 5 days.
For trips of 3 days or fewer, an Airtel or Jio Sri Lanka roaming pack is more convenient. You keep your Indian number and avoid the hassle of a new SIM. For 7-night trips, the local SIM saves money and gives better local network coverage in areas like Ella and Sigiriya.
Power banks above 20,000 mAh are not permitted in cabin baggage on any airline operating the India–Sri Lanka route. IndiGo, Air India, and SriLankan Airlines all follow this rule. Keep your power bank in your carry-on, not in checked luggage.

Can Indians use Indian rupees or cards in Sri Lanka?
Indian Rupees are not widely accepted in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Rupees are the preferred currency everywhere. USD is accepted at some tourist hotels and shops in Colombo. Indian debit and credit cards on Visa or Mastercard networks work at ATMs and most hotels.
The exchange rate as of mid-2025 is approximately 1 INR to 3.7 LKR. Exchange at authorised money changers in Colombo or at the airport for a better rate than hotel desks. Avoid exchanging INR at small shops — the rate is poor and some shops refuse INR entirely.
| Payment Method | Acceptance Level in Sri Lanka | Practical Notes for Indians |
|---|---|---|
| Indian Rupee (INR) | Low — accepted at select Colombo shops only | Exchange rate is unfavorable; convert to LKR before travel |
| Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) | Universal — accepted everywhere | Carry LKR cash for tuk-tuks, local markets, and small eateries |
| USD cash | Moderate — accepted at tourist hotels and some shops | Useful as emergency backup; carry USD 50–100 |
| Indian debit/credit card (Visa/Mastercard) | Good — works at ATMs and most hotels | Inform your bank before travel to avoid international block |
| Forex prepaid card | Good — accepted where cards are taken | Load USD or LKR; avoids dynamic currency conversion charges |
A forex prepaid card loaded with USD is the most practical option for Sri Lanka. You avoid the 3–5% foreign transaction fee on regular debit cards. Cards from BookMyForex, Thomas Cook, or your bank's travel card division work well.
What is the ideal bag setup for a Sri Lanka trip from India?
For a 7-night Sri Lanka trip, the ideal setup is one 20–25 kg check-in bag, one 7 kg cabin bag, a 20-litre day backpack for sightseeing, and a dry bag for beach days or monsoon-season travel. Packing cubes help separate beach, hill country, and temple outfits.
IndiGo and Air India flights on the India–Sri Lanka route typically allow 7 kg cabin baggage and 20–25 kg check-in baggage. SriLankan Airlines allows up to 30 kg check-in on some fare classes. Confirm your specific fare allowance before packing.
A dry bag (10–15 litre) is useful for Mirissa beach days and for the Ella train journey during monsoon months when rain arrives without warning. It costs INR 300–600 in India and is not easy to find in Sri Lanka outside Colombo.
Sri Lanka customs prohibits fresh fruits, vegetables, and soil. Certain medications — particularly those containing codeine or strong sedatives — require a doctor's prescription letter at customs. Do not pack these items without documentation.
A small padlock for hostel lockers or guesthouse doors is worth carrying. Most budget properties in Ella and Mirissa do not provide room locks of the same standard as Indian hotels.

What are the most common packing mistakes Indians make for Sri Lanka?
The most common mistakes are overpacking formal clothes, forgetting rain gear during monsoon months, not carrying the ETA printout, assuming Indian Rupees work everywhere, skipping travel insurance, and packing only flip-flops for a trip that includes Sigiriya.
The Sigiriya rock climb involves 1,200 steps on uneven stone surfaces. Flip-flops are unsafe on this route. Closed shoes or sturdy sandals with ankle support are necessary. Many Indian travelers arrive at Sigiriya in flip-flops and either skip the climb or risk injury.
Not carrying the ETA printout is a recurring issue at Colombo airport. Immigration officers may ask for a physical copy even if you show the digital version. Print it before you leave India.
- Mistake: Packing only formal or semi-formal clothes. Fix: Sri Lanka is casual. Light cotton casuals cover 90% of situations.
- Mistake: No rain poncho in May–September. Fix: A compact rain poncho weighs 200 grams and fits in a day bag.
- Mistake: Assuming INR is accepted. Fix: Convert to LKR or carry USD before departure.
- Mistake: Skipping travel insurance. Fix: A 7-night policy costs INR 500–900 and covers medical, cancellation, and baggage loss.
- Mistake: No warm layer for hill country. Fix: One fleece handles Ella and Nuwara Eliya nights at 12–15°C.
