Getting Around Malaysia: Transport Guide for Indian Tourists
Malaysia runs on a layered transport network — rail, road, air, and ferry — and knowing how to get around Malaysia for Indian tourists comes down to matching the right mode to each route. KL Sentral, the central interchange in Kuala Lumpur, connects every major line under one roof. This guide covers intra-city rail, intercity buses, domestic flights, ride-hailing, and car rental, with fares, documents, and route-specific decisions for each.
What transport options are available for getting around Malaysia?
Malaysia offers five main transport modes for tourists: urban rail (LRT, MRT, monorail), intercity rail via KTM, intercity buses, domestic flights, and ride-hailing through Grab. Each mode suits different routes and budgets. The Touch 'n Go eWallet works across rail, buses, and toll roads, reducing the need for cash throughout the trip.
RapidKL operates the urban rail network in Kuala Lumpur, covering the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, MRT Putrajaya Line, and the KL Monorail. KTM Intercity, operated by Kereta Api Tanah Melayu, runs trains between KL, Ipoh, Penang, and Johor Bahru. Long-distance bus operators such as Aeroline and Konsortium cover routes from KL to Penang and Singapore at fares between RM 35 and RM 80. AirAsia and Firefly connect KL to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Langkawi in under two hours. Grab handles most intra-city ride-hailing needs across major cities.
Touch 'n Go eWallet is a Malaysian contactless payment system accepted on all RapidKL rail lines, city buses, and highway toll plazas. Indian tourists can load the card at convenience stores or top up via the app after linking an international card. The physical Touch 'n Go card costs RM 10 and is available at most 7-Eleven outlets and convenience stores near major stations. Keep at least RM 30 loaded on arrival day to cover airport rail and a few city trips.
Malaysia has two distinct geographical zones that affect transport planning. Peninsular Malaysia covers KL, Penang, Langkawi, and Johor Bahru. East Malaysia — Sabah and Sarawak — sits on the island of Borneo and has no road or rail link to the peninsula. Indian tourists planning to visit both zones must factor in at least one domestic flight leg.

How does the rail network work in Kuala Lumpur and between cities?
KL Sentral connects the LRT, MRT, KTM Intercity, KLIA Ekspres, and monorail lines in one interchange. For intra-city travel, the LRT and MRT cover most tourist areas. KTM Intercity handles routes to Penang, Ipoh, and Johor Bahru. The KLIA Ekspres links the airport to the city in 28 minutes.
KL Sentral is the primary hub for all inter-city rail departures from Kuala Lumpur. Trains on the KTM Intercity network run multiple times daily. Booking in advance through the KTM website or app is recommended, especially on weekends. The station has clear English signage throughout, which makes navigation straightforward for first-time visitors.
The MRT Putrajaya Line is the newest addition to KL's rail network. It runs from Kwasa Damansara in the northwest to Putrajaya in the south. Stations along this line include Semantan, Phileo Damansara, and Cyberjaya. For tourists staying near the KLCC or Bukit Bintang corridor, the LRT Kelana Jaya Line remains the most useful daily option.
How do you get from KLIA airport to the city centre?
KLIA Ekspres is an airport rail link that covers the distance from KLIA to KL Sentral in 28 minutes. The one-way adult fare is RM 55. Trains run every 15–20 minutes between approximately 5 AM and midnight. This is faster and more predictable than a taxi during peak hours.
KLIA2, the terminal used by AirAsia, is connected to KL Sentral by the same KLIA Ekspres service. The journey from KLIA2 takes 33 minutes and costs RM 55 as well. Passengers arriving at KLIA2 should follow signs to the ERL (Express Rail Link) station inside the terminal. The walk from the arrival hall to the ERL platform takes about 8–10 minutes.
Which rail line covers central KL attractions?
The KL Monorail and LRT Kelana Jaya Line cover Bukit Bintang, KLCC, Masjid Jamek, and Chow Kit. Single-trip fares range from RM 1.20 to RM 4.50 depending on distance. Touch 'n Go cards work on all these lines and eliminate the need to buy individual tokens each time.
The Bukit Bintang monorail station puts you within walking distance of Pavilion KL and Jalan Alor. The KLCC LRT station exits directly into the Suria KLCC mall at the base of the Petronas Towers. Masjid Jamek station is the interchange point between the LRT Kelana Jaya and Ampang lines, and it sits next to the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

Which is the best way to travel between KL, Penang, and other major cities?
The best mode between Malaysian cities depends on distance, time, and budget. KL to Penang suits both train and bus. KL to Kota Kinabalu requires a domestic flight. Buses are cheapest for short-to-medium routes. Flights save significant time on routes over 600 km.
| Route | Recommended Mode | Approx. Travel Time | Approx. Cost (RM) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KL – Penang | KTM Intercity train or bus | 3.5 hrs (train) / 4.5 hrs (bus) | RM 35–85 | Budget travellers, scenic route |
| KL – Langkawi | Domestic flight | 1 hr 10 min | RM 80–200 | Time-saving, island access |
| KL – Johor Bahru | Bus or KTM ETS | 4–5 hrs | RM 35–60 | Budget travellers, frequent departures |
| KL – Kota Kinabalu | Domestic flight | 2 hrs 20 min | RM 120–300 | Only practical option — no road/rail link |
| KL – Kuching | Domestic flight | 1 hr 45 min | RM 100–280 | East Malaysia access, no overland route |
AirAsia carried over 50 million passengers on domestic Malaysian routes in 2023, making it the dominant carrier for inter-city air travel within the country. — Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) Annual Report 2023
When does a domestic flight make more sense than the train or bus?
A domestic flight is the right choice when the destination is in East Malaysia — Sabah or Sarawak — since no road or rail connection exists from Peninsular Malaysia. For Langkawi, flying from KL takes just over an hour. The bus alternative via Penang and a ferry crossing takes close to eight hours total.
AirAsia and Firefly both operate these routes. Booking two to three weeks ahead typically brings fares to RM 80–150 one-way. Last-minute fares can reach RM 300 or more on popular routes. AirAsia uses KLIA2 for most domestic departures. Firefly operates from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, which is closer to central KL for some travellers.
How do intercity buses compare to trains on cost and comfort?
The intercity bus is cheaper than KTM on most routes. Aeroline and Konsortium buses on the KL–Penang route charge RM 35–55 for a standard seat. KTM ETS trains on the same route cost RM 50–85 but offer more legroom and a fixed schedule. Buses depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in KL, which is accessible via MRT.
Premium bus operators offer reclining seats and onboard Wi-Fi. For overnight travel, a sleeper bus is a practical option on longer routes. Train booking can be done via the KTM Berhad app or website. Bus tickets are available on BusOnlineTicket.com or Easybook. TBS itself is a large, well-organised terminal with food courts, luggage storage, and clear departure boards. Allow 30 minutes to clear the terminal and reach your platform on busy weekends.
How do you travel between Penang island and the mainland?
Penang is connected to the mainland by two options: the Penang Bridge and the Penang Ferry. The Penang Bridge carries road traffic and takes about 30 minutes by car or bus from Butterworth. The Penang Ferry runs between Butterworth and Georgetown and costs RM 1.20 for foot passengers. The ferry crossing takes about 20 minutes and runs from early morning until late night. If you arrive by KTM train at Butterworth station, the ferry terminal is a short walk from the platform exit.

Can Indian tourists use Grab and ride-hailing apps in Malaysia?
Indian tourists can use Grab in Malaysia by downloading the app before travel and registering with an Indian mobile number. The app accepts international Visa and Mastercard. Grab operates in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru. In smaller cities, MyCar or InDriver may have better coverage.
Grab Malaysia is the dominant ride-hailing platform in the country, operating across all major urban centres. Fares within central KL typically range from RM 8 to RM 25 for most point-to-point trips. Surge pricing applies during peak hours and rainy evenings. A trip from KL Sentral to KLCC costs approximately RM 10–14 during normal hours and can rise to RM 20–28 during evening rush.
MyCar and InDriver are e-hailing alternatives that operate in Tier-2 cities where Grab driver availability is lower. Metered taxis are still available at airports and hotels, but e-hailing apps generally offer more transparent pricing. Avoid unmarked taxis that approach you at tourist sites — always book through an app or a licensed taxi counter. At KLIA and KLIA2, licensed taxi counters are located in the arrival halls and charge fixed zone-based fares.
One practical tip: save your hotel address in both English and Malay before each trip. Some drivers in smaller towns have limited English. Sharing the destination pin on Grab removes any language barrier entirely. Also keep a local Malaysian SIM active — Grab requires a working data connection to book and track rides.
Do Indian tourists need a special licence or permit to rent a car in Malaysia?
Indian tourists require a valid international driving permit alongside their Indian driving licence to rent and drive a car in Malaysia. An IDP issued by the Automobile Association of India is accepted. Without an IDP, most rental companies will not hand over the vehicle, regardless of the Indian licence validity.
Car rental operators including Mayflower and Hertz Malaysia operate at KLIA, KL Sentral, and major city centres. Malaysia drives on the left, the same as India, so the adjustment is minimal. Toll roads are common on Malaysian highways. Touch 'n Go cards work at all toll plazas and can be used in rental cars. Daily rental rates for a standard sedan start around RM 120–180 per day, excluding fuel and toll charges. Fuel in Malaysia is subsidised and significantly cheaper than in India.
| Destination | Car Rental Recommended? | Reason | IDP Required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur | No | Rail and Grab cover all tourist areas efficiently | Yes, if renting |
| Penang | Optional | Georgetown is walkable; car useful for outskirts | Yes, if renting |
| Langkawi | Yes | No public bus network; car or bike is the main option | Yes |
| Cameron Highlands | Yes | Tea estates and farms are spread out; taxis are limited | Yes |
| Kota Kinabalu | Yes, for outskirts | City centre is manageable; national park access needs a car | Yes |
On Langkawi specifically, renting a car or scooter is the standard approach for most tourists. The island has no Grab service and public buses are infrequent. A scooter rental costs around RM 35–50 per day. Car rental on the island runs RM 100–160 per day. Both options require a valid licence — IDP plus Indian licence for cars, and a valid two-wheeler licence for scooters.

What should Indian tourists know about ferry travel in Malaysia?
Ferry services in Malaysia connect the mainland to islands including Langkawi, Tioman, and the Perhentian Islands. Routes, schedules, and seasonal availability vary significantly by destination. Langkawi ferries run year-round from Penang and Kuala Perlis. Island ferries in the east coast — Tioman and Perhentians — operate only between March and October due to monsoon conditions.
The Langkawi–Penang ferry departs from Swettenham Pier in Georgetown and takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. The one-way fare is around RM 60–70 for adults. Ferries run two to three times daily depending on the season. Booking in advance during school holidays and long weekends is advisable, as seats sell out on popular departure times.
The Kuala Perlis–Langkawi ferry is shorter — about 45 minutes — and costs RM 23 one-way. Kuala Perlis is accessible by bus or car from KL. This route is useful if you are combining a Cameron Highlands or Penang leg with Langkawi and want to avoid backtracking to KL for a flight. Ferries to the Perhentian Islands depart from Kuala Besut in Terengganu. The crossing takes 30–45 minutes and costs around RM 35–45 one-way.
| Ferry Route | Departure Point | Journey Time | One-Way Fare (RM) | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penang – Langkawi | Swettenham Pier, Georgetown | 2.5–3 hrs | RM 60–70 | Year-round |
| Kuala Perlis – Langkawi | Kuala Perlis Jetty | 45 min | RM 23 | Year-round |
| Kuala Besut – Perhentian Islands | Kuala Besut Jetty, Terengganu | 30–45 min | RM 35–45 | March – October only |
| Mersing – Tioman Island | Mersing Jetty, Johor | 1.5–2 hrs | RM 35–50 | March – October only |
| Butterworth – Georgetown (Penang) | Butterworth Ferry Terminal | 20 min | RM 1.20 (foot passenger) | Year-round |
East coast island ferries stop running during the northeast monsoon, which runs from November through February. Tourists planning beach trips to Tioman or the Perhentians must travel between March and October. Langkawi, on the west coast, is sheltered from the northeast monsoon and remains accessible year-round. This seasonal difference affects how Indian tourists should structure a multi-destination Malaysia trip.

What are the most common transport mistakes Indian tourists make in Malaysia?
The most common mistakes involve skipping the Touch 'n Go card, booking an airport taxi instead of the KLIA Ekspres, and assuming Grab works in every part of the country. These errors add cost and delay, especially on arrival day and during island travel.
Not loading a Touch 'n Go card before the first rail journey means buying tokens at each station, which takes time during rush hour. Booking a metered taxi from KLIA costs RM 80–120 to the city centre. The KLIA Ekspres covers the same route in 28 minutes for RM 55. Over a week-long trip with multiple rail journeys, the Touch 'n Go card saves both time and a small amount on each fare compared to token purchases.
Many tourists underestimate the distance between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah or Sarawak. These are separate landmasses. A flight is the only practical connection. Assuming a train or bus can get you to Kota Kinabalu from KL is a planning error that affects itineraries significantly. The flight from KL to Kota Kinabalu takes about 2 hours 20 minutes. There is no alternative.
On Langkawi, Grab has limited driver availability. Pre-arranging a local taxi or renting a scooter is more reliable. Ferry schedules between Langkawi and Penang run a fixed timetable — missing the last ferry means an overnight stay on the island. Check the last departure time before planning your final day on the island. The last Langkawi–Penang ferry typically departs around 5:30 PM, though this varies by operator and season.
Another common error is not accounting for travel time between KLIA2 and the city when connecting to an intercity bus at TBS. KLIA2 to KL Sentral takes 33 minutes by rail. KL Sentral to TBS takes another 10–15 minutes by LRT. Budget at least 90 minutes between landing and your bus departure time. Many tourists book a bus too soon after a domestic flight arrival and miss it.
