Getting Around Kashmir: Complete Transport Guide
This how to get around kashmir transport guide covers every practical transport option inside Jammu and Kashmir — from arrival modes to intercity roads, city commutes, seasonal closures, and permit rules. Kashmir's terrain ranges from valley floors to high-altitude passes, so transport choices affect your itinerary directly. Knowing which route closes in October and which taxi costs ₹300 versus ₹3,000 saves real time and money.
How do you get to Kashmir from the rest of India?
Three arrival routes connect mainland India to Kashmir: direct flights into Srinagar Airport, an overnight train to Jammu Tawi followed by a road transfer, and a full road journey on NH-44 from Jammu. Most tourists from Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru fly directly into Srinagar to save time.
What are the flight options to Srinagar?
Srinagar Airport carries the IATA code SXR and handles direct flights from Delhi (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes), Mumbai (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes), and Bengaluru (approximately 2 hours 50 minutes). IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet operate these routes. Fares on the Delhi–Srinagar sector range from ₹3,500 to ₹9,000 depending on advance booking and season. Flights are the fastest and most reliable entry point, especially between November and March when NH-44 faces disruptions.
How does the train-plus-road route work from Jammu?
Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the nearest major railhead to the Kashmir Valley. It sits approximately 300 km from Srinagar via NH-44. Trains from Delhi reach Jammu Tawi in 8 to 10 hours. The Banihal Rail Tunnel — an 11.2 km tunnel operational since 2013 — now extends rail connectivity to Banihal, reducing the onward road distance to Srinagar to roughly 100 km. From Banihal, shared taxis or JKSRTC buses cover the remaining stretch in about 2 hours. Total Jammu-to-Srinagar travel time by this combined route is approximately 5 to 6 hours from Jammu Tawi.

What is the most practical way to travel between Kashmir's main tourist destinations?
Shared Sumo taxis are the most common intercity transport in Kashmir, running fixed routes between Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg at low fares. Private cabs offer flexibility for families or groups. JKSRTC buses are the cheapest option but run on fixed schedules. Helicopters serve specific routes when roads are blocked.
| Transport Mode | Route Example | Approx. Fare (INR) | Travel Time | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared Sumo taxi | Srinagar to Gulmarg | ₹200–₹350 per seat | 1.5–2 hours | Solo travellers, budget trips |
| Private hired cab | Srinagar to Pahalgam | ₹2,500–₹3,500 per vehicle | 2–2.5 hours | Families, groups, flexible itineraries |
| JKSRTC bus | Srinagar to Jammu | ₹300–₹500 per seat | 6–8 hours | Budget travellers on fixed schedules |
| Pawan Hans helicopter | Srinagar to Pahalgam | ₹3,000–₹5,000 per seat | 20–30 minutes | Road closures, Amarnath Yatra pilgrims |
| Self-drive rental | Srinagar local and valley | ₹2,500–₹4,000 per day | Variable | Experienced mountain drivers only |
How much do shared Sumo taxis cost in Kashmir?
Shared Sumo taxis operate on fixed intercity routes from designated stands in Srinagar. The Srinagar-to-Gulmarg shared fare runs between ₹200 and ₹350 per seat. Srinagar to Sonamarg costs approximately ₹300 to ₹450 per seat. Taxis depart when full, typically between 7 AM and 10 AM. Arriving at the taxi stand before 8 AM gives you the best chance of a morning departure. These vehicles are shared Tata Sumo or Mahindra Bolero jeeps carrying 6 to 8 passengers.
When does it make sense to hire a private cab instead?
Private cabs make sense for families with children, travellers carrying heavy luggage, or anyone wanting to stop at specific viewpoints en route. A private Srinagar-to-Pahalgam cab costs ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for the full vehicle. For a group of four splitting the cost, private cabs are often only marginally more expensive than four shared seats. Drivers familiar with NH-44 and mountain roads are available through hotel referrals or local travel agents in Srinagar.
Are helicopter services reliable for tourist routes?
Pawan Hans operates government helicopter services connecting Srinagar to Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Amarnath base camps. Helicopter services are weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice due to low visibility or wind. During the Amarnath Yatra season (July–August), helicopter seats sell out days in advance. Booking through the official Pawan Hans website or a registered agent is advisable for Yatra routes.

How does getting around Srinagar city work?
Within Srinagar, travellers use auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, app-based cabs, and Shikara boats on Dal Lake. Auto-rickshaws cover most city routes at negotiated fares of ₹50 to ₹150 for short distances. The Old City area near Jama Masjid is best covered on foot due to narrow lanes.
Can you use Ola or Uber in Srinagar?
Ola operates in Srinagar with limited driver availability. Uber has minimal presence in the city. App-based cab availability drops significantly outside central Srinagar. For reliable city transport, auto-rickshaws or hotel-arranged cabs are more dependable than app platforms. E-rickshaws are available near Dal Lake and the main bazaar areas at fares of ₹20 to ₹50 per short hop.
How do Shikara rides work for getting around Dal Lake?
A Shikara is a traditional wooden boat used on Dal Lake for short commutes and houseboat transfers. Shikara operators charge approximately ₹100 to ₹200 for a short point-to-point transfer across the lake. Hourly hire for sightseeing runs ₹500 to ₹800. Houseboat guests typically arrange Shikara transfers through their property. Fixed government-rate Shikaras are available at the Dal Lake ghats near Boulevard Road.

Which roads in Kashmir close during winter and what are the alternatives?
Several key roads in Kashmir close seasonally due to snow and avalanche risk. NH-44 between Jammu and Srinagar faces closures of 1 to 15 days at a time during heavy snowfall. Zoji La Pass on NH-1 closes from October to May. When roads close, air travel and helicopter services become the only practical alternatives.
According to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), NH-44 through the Banihal section experiences an average of 30 to 45 closure days per winter season, with individual closures lasting 1 to 7 days depending on snowfall intensity and avalanche clearance timelines.
| Road or Pass | Typical Closure Period | Alternate Route | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NH-44 (Banihal section) | December–February (intermittent) | Fly into Srinagar Airport | Closures last 1–7 days per event |
| Zoji La Pass (NH-1) | October–May | No road alternate; fly Srinagar–Leh | Altitude 3,528 m; connects Srinagar to Leh |
| Mughal Road (Shopian–Poonch) | November–April | NH-44 via Jammu | Alternate to NH-44 when open in summer |
| Sinthan Top | November–May | Pahalgam–Srinagar via NH-44 | Connects Anantnag to Kishtwar |
What happens to Srinagar–Leh travel when Zoji La closes?
Zoji La Pass sits at 3,528 m on NH-1 and remains closed from October through May each year. During closure, the only practical option for Srinagar-to-Leh travel is a direct flight. Air India and IndiGo operate Srinagar–Leh flights in approximately 45 minutes. Road travellers planning the Srinagar–Leh highway must schedule the trip between June and September.

Do foreign nationals need permits to travel around Kashmir?
Most of Kashmir is open to foreign nationals without special permits. Restricted areas such as Gurez Valley and parts of the Lolab Valley require an Inner Line Permit for foreign visitors. Some zones near the Line of Control require a Protected Area Permit. Indian nationals face fewer restrictions but need permits for specific border-adjacent areas.
Which areas in Kashmir require a permit for Indian tourists?
Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit to visit Gurez Valley. The permit is issued by the Deputy Commissioner's office in Bandipora or through registered travel agents in Srinagar. Standard tourist areas — Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and Dal Lake — are open to all Indian nationals without any permit. Foreign nationals should confirm current permit requirements with the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) in Srinagar before travel, as rules are subject to revision.

What are the most common transport mistakes tourists make in Kashmir?
The most frequent transport errors in Kashmir involve timing, booking, and assumptions about road conditions. Tourists who skip weather checks before mountain road trips risk getting stranded for 24 to 48 hours. Assuming app cabs work outside Srinagar leads to delays at trailheads and remote villages where no such service exists.
Not pre-booking shared taxis during peak season (May–July and September–October) means missing the morning departure window entirely. Underestimating travel times on mountain roads is the single most common planning error — a 90 km route in Kashmir can take 3 hours due to gradient, hairpin bends, and traffic at checkpoints.
How far in advance should you book transport for Amarnath Yatra season?
Amarnath Yatra runs from late June to mid-August each year. During this period, shared taxis, private cabs, and helicopter seats on Srinagar–Pahalgam and Srinagar–Sonamarg routes fill up 5 to 10 days in advance. Hotel-arranged transport is the most reliable option during Yatra season. Booking through a registered Kashmir tour operator at least two weeks before travel is advisable for this window.
