Best Places to Stay in Japan for Indians: Hotels, Resorts & Villas
Japan accommodation for Indian travellers spans traditional ryokan inns, compact business hotels, and full-service city resorts. Choosing the right base affects your food access, transit efficiency, and daily comfort. This guide covers the best places to stay in Japan for Indians — city by city, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, with price context in INR and JPY.
Which cities in Japan are best for Indian tourists to base themselves in?
Tokyo suits first-time Indian visitors due to its Indian restaurant concentration and direct flight connectivity. Osaka works well for budget-conscious travellers and those seeking Indian vegetarian food. Kyoto is the right base for travellers whose trip centres on temples and traditional culture.
Tokyo is Japan's capital city with a population of 14 million. It has the highest hotel density in Japan and the widest range of accommodation price points. Indian restaurants are spread across Shinjuku, Nishi-Kasai, and Asakusa, making daily vegetarian meals manageable.
Osaka is Japan's third-largest city and a commercial hub. The Dotonbori district in Namba has a growing number of Indian and South Asian restaurants. Hotel rates in Osaka run 15–20% lower than equivalent Tokyo properties.
Kyoto is the former imperial capital of Japan. The city has over 1,200 temples and shrines. Indian food options are fewer here, concentrated near Kyoto Station and Kawaramachi. Travellers who plan to spend most days at cultural sites will find Kyoto the most efficient base.
- Tokyo — best for first-timers, business travellers, and families needing Indian food daily
- Osaka — best for budget travellers and those combining Japan with a Kansai circuit
- Kyoto — best for culture-focused travellers comfortable with limited Indian food access

What types of accommodation are available in Japan for Indian travellers?
Japan offers five main accommodation types for Indian travellers: ryokan, business hotels, capsule hotels, resort hotels, and serviced apartments. Each type differs in room size, meal inclusion, price, and proximity to Indian food. Business hotels are the most practical choice for most Indian tourists.
| Accommodation Type | Price Range (JPY/night) | Approx. INR/night | Best Suited For | Indian Vegetarian Food Nearby |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryokan (traditional inn) | ¥15,000–¥50,000 | ₹8,500–₹28,000 | Couples, cultural experience seekers | Limited — carry snacks or eat before check-in |
| Business Hotel (Toyoko Inn, APA) | ¥6,000–¥12,000 | ₹3,400–₹6,800 | Solo travellers, budget-conscious families | Good — located in city centres |
| Capsule Hotel | ¥3,000–¥6,000 | ₹1,700–₹3,400 | Solo backpackers, short stopovers | Moderate — depends on location |
| Resort Hotel (Hakone, Nikko) | ¥20,000–¥80,000 | ₹11,300–₹45,000 | Luxury travellers, honeymoon couples | Poor — plan meals in advance |
| Serviced Apartment | ¥10,000–¥25,000 | ₹5,600–₹14,000 | Families staying 5+ nights, groups | Good — self-catering possible |
According to Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Indian nationals ranked among the fastest-growing inbound visitor segments in 2023, with over 200,000 arrivals recorded — a 3x increase from 2019 pre-pandemic levels. This growth has driven a measurable increase in Indian-friendly dining options near major hotel clusters in Tokyo and Osaka.
Serviced apartments are worth considering for families travelling with children. A kitchen reduces daily food costs significantly when Indian vegetarian options outside are limited or expensive.
Which neighbourhoods in Tokyo are most practical for Indian tourists?
Shinjuku is the most practical Tokyo neighbourhood for Indian tourists due to its dense Indian restaurant cluster, direct metro access to all major sights, and wide hotel range from ¥7,000 to ¥30,000 per night. Asakusa suits travellers who want a quieter base near traditional Tokyo.
Shinjuku is a ward in western central Tokyo. It serves as one of the busiest transit hubs in the world. Indian restaurants — including South Indian, Punjabi, and vegetarian-only options — are concentrated within a 10-minute walk of Shinjuku Station. Hotels here range from budget business hotels at ¥7,000/night to mid-range properties at ¥18,000/night.
Asakusa is a district in eastern Tokyo known for Senso-ji Temple. It is quieter than Shinjuku and has a more traditional street character. Hotel prices in Asakusa average ¥8,000–¥15,000 per night. Indian food options are fewer, but the area is well connected by the Ginza and Asakusa metro lines.
Shibuya is a commercial and entertainment district in south-central Tokyo. It suits younger travellers and those interested in shopping. Indian restaurants are present but less concentrated than in Shinjuku. Business hotels in Shibuya average ¥10,000–¥20,000 per night.
- Shinjuku — best overall for Indian tourists; food, transit, and price all work
- Asakusa — best for travellers who want a slower pace and traditional Tokyo atmosphere
- Shibuya — best for younger travellers combining shopping with sightseeing
Nishi-Kasai, in eastern Tokyo, has the largest Indian expat community in Japan. Several Indian grocery stores and restaurants operate there. It is a practical base for long-stay travellers or those who want to cook Indian food themselves.

Where should Indian tourists stay in Kyoto and Osaka?
In Kyoto, staying near Kyoto Station gives the best transit access and the most Indian food options. In Osaka, Namba is the most cost-efficient base. Gion in Kyoto suits travellers who want to walk to temples, but Indian food there is scarce.
| City + Area | Hotel Type Available | Avg Price (JPY/night) | Distance to Key Sights | Vegetarian Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kyoto — Kyoto Station area | Business hotel, mid-range hotel | ¥8,000–¥18,000 | 5–20 min by bus to major temples | Moderate — 3–4 Indian restaurants within 1 km |
| Kyoto — Gion district | Ryokan, boutique hotel | ¥20,000–¥50,000 | Walking distance to Gion, Kiyomizudera | Poor — plan meals before arriving |
| Osaka — Namba | Budget hotel, business hotel | ¥6,000–¥12,000 | Walking distance to Dotonbori, Den Den Town | Good — Indian and South Asian restaurants present |
| Osaka — Umeda | Mid-range to luxury hotel | ¥12,000–¥30,000 | 10 min to Osaka Castle, direct Shinkansen access | Moderate — fewer Indian options than Namba |
Gion is Kyoto's geisha district. It has a cluster of traditional ryokan and is walkable to Kiyomizudera Temple and Yasaka Shrine. The trade-off is price — ryokan in Gion start at ¥20,000 per night — and limited Indian food within walking distance.
Namba in Osaka, as noted in the city comparison above, is the most cost-efficient base in the Kansai region for Indian tourists. Budget hotels in Namba start at ¥6,000 per night, which is approximately ₹3,400 at current exchange rates.

What should Indian travellers know before booking a ryokan in Japan?
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn with tatami mat floors, futon bedding, and communal or private onsen baths. Most ryokan include dinner and breakfast in the room rate. Indian travellers should confirm vegetarian meal options at the time of booking, not on arrival.
Onsen is a natural hot spring bath facility. Most ryokan include onsen access. Many onsen facilities in Japan prohibit entry for guests with visible tattoos. This rule applies regardless of tattoo size or placement. Confirm the property's tattoo policy before booking if this applies to you.
Ryokan check-in typically begins at 3 PM and dinner is served between 6 PM and 7 PM. Late arrivals may miss the included meal. Advance booking is required — popular ryokan in Hakone, Nikko, and Kinosaki fill up 2–3 months ahead during peak season.
Meal inclusion is a key cost factor. A ryokan at ¥25,000 per night with two meals included may cost less in total than a business hotel at ¥10,000 per night where you pay separately for all food. Calculate the full daily cost before comparing.
Tatami rooms have no beds. Futons are laid out on the floor by staff each evening. Travellers with knee or back conditions should confirm whether the property offers any Western-style bed options.

How much should Indian tourists budget for accommodation in Japan?
Indian tourists should budget ₹3,400–₹6,800 per night for budget accommodation, ₹7,000–₹16,000 for mid-range hotels, and ₹17,000 and above for luxury or ryokan stays. Prices rise 30–50% during Golden Week in late April and early May.
Budget tier covers capsule hotels and basic business hotels. These properties are clean and well-located but have very small rooms — typically 10–14 square metres. They work for solo travellers or couples on short trips.
Mid-range hotels in Japan offer rooms of 18–25 square metres with Western beds, private bathrooms, and breakfast options. Chains like Dormy Inn and Richmond Hotel fall in this tier. Prices average ¥12,000–¥18,000 per night in Tokyo and slightly less in Osaka.
Luxury hotels and ryokan start at ¥30,000 per night. International chains like Hyatt, Marriott, and Park Hyatt operate in Tokyo and Osaka. These properties have English-speaking staff and are more likely to accommodate dietary requests including vegetarian meals.
Golden Week (late April to early May) and cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) are the two highest-demand periods. Book accommodation 3–4 months in advance for these windows. Prices outside these periods are 20–40% lower.

Choosing the best places to stay in Japan for Indians comes down to three factors: proximity to Indian food, transit access, and accommodation type suited to your travel style. Tokyo's Shinjuku and Osaka's Namba are the two most practical bases. Kyoto's Gion suits culture-focused travellers who plan meals in advance. Ryokan stays require early booking and dietary confirmation. Budget at least ₹5,000–₹7,000 per night per room for a comfortable mid-range experience across all three cities.
