A considered guide to Myanmar
Myanmar at a Glance
Myanmar is a mainland Southeast Asian country bordered by India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand, with a coastline on the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal. For Indian travellers, this is a heritage-and-culture trip built around Buddhist sites, historic cities and lake country — not a beach-resort break.
The cool, dry season from November to February is the best window, with clear skies, low rainfall and daytime temperatures roughly between 15°C and 32°C. Budget 10 to 14 nights to cover the classic circuit properly. Yangon International Airport is the main gateway for arrivals from India, with domestic flights stitching together the onward legs to Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake.
Why Travellers Choose Myanmar
Three things pull people here: the ancient temple plains of Bagan, the Buddhist and royal heritage of Mandalay, and the lake and hill country around Inle Lake in Shan State. Each area is distinct enough to justify the domestic flights between them.
- Scale of the temple landscape. The Bagan Archaeological Zone is a wide plain of ancient Buddhist temples and pagodas that you cover by bus, private car or e-bike. Nothing else in Southeast Asia quite matches the sheer number of structures across open ground.
- Living Buddhist culture. Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is the country's principal spiritual sight. The Golden Rock at Mount Kyaiktiyo draws pilgrims who hike to the summit. Etiquette around monks and pagodas is woven into daily travel here in a way that feels different from more tourist-heavy destinations.
- Shorter haul from India. Flights from Delhi and Kolkata connect through Yangon International Airport, making this a shorter journey than Europe or the Americas for most Indian travellers. The cultural overlap — shared Buddhist traditions, familiar vegetarian food options — also eases the transition.
One trade-off to name clearly: transport connectivity and tourism gateway operations remain reduced compared with earlier years, and passenger traffic is still far below pre-pandemic levels. Build the trip around confirmed domestic flights, not overland routes.
Top Places and Areas in Myanmar
The destinations below form the core of any Myanmar holiday. Each entry notes why it appeals and one practical tip to help you plan.
- Yangon. The former capital is known for Shwedagon Pagoda and its colonial-era streets. The Yangon Circular Train — fare under US$1 as of 2026 — is a low-cost half-day introduction to the city without any walking strain.
- Bagan. The Archaeological Zone holds ancient Buddhist temples and pagodas across open plains. Nyaung-U Airport sits roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car from New Bagan, so the domestic flight saves a full road day.
- Mandalay. A central city on the Ayeyarwady River, associated with royal and Buddhist sites and a base for river travel. Pair it with Bagan rather than treating it as a single day stop — two nights is the practical minimum.
- Inle Lake and Nyaung Shwe. Lakeside villages, floating gardens and Shan hill country, served by Heho Airport. Boat tours are the standard way to see the lake and Intha daily life.
- Kalaw. A Shan State hill town and the usual starting point for the two-day trek to Inle Lake. Take it on only if you are fit for two full days of walking.
- Pindaya. Another Shan State starting point for hikes towards Inle Lake, with a calmer pace than Kalaw. Useful if you want the trek without the busiest trailhead.
- Golden Rock, Mount Kyaiktiyo. A pilgrimage site reached by hiking to the summit. Slot it early or late in the trip, since it is a half-day-plus detour from Yangon.
- Ngapali Beach. A coastal option near Thandwe for sea and boat activities. Keep it optional — it adds a domestic flight and two to three nights to the itinerary.
- Hpa-An. A Kayin State area with local food and lower regional prices than the main tourist centres. Good for travellers with spare days who want a different pace.
- Nyaung-U. The practical Bagan base with guesthouses, restaurants and market activity close to the temple plain. Stay here for easy access and mid-range choices.
Best Time to Go to Myanmar
November to February is the best time to visit Myanmar, with clear skies, low rainfall and comfortable daytime temperatures between 15°C and 32°C. January and December are particularly settled, with low crowds and lower prices.
March to mid-May is the hot season. Temperatures reach about 40°C in central Myanmar, especially around Bagan and Mandalay. April is the hottest month and also the peak-price period, but it brings Thingyan, the Myanmar New Year water festival — worth considering if the heat does not put you off. October and early November form a useful shoulder window: rainfall drops to moderate, crowds are low and prices stay low.
Avoid mid-May to October if possible. The southwest monsoon can seriously disrupt travel from mid-May, and July and August are usually the wettest months, particularly in Yangon and along the coast. September can be exceptionally wet and may affect road and flight conditions. If monsoon travel is your only option, keep the itinerary tight and rely on domestic flights rather than buses.
How to Reach Myanmar from India
Fly into Yangon International Airport, the main gateway for Indian travellers. Flights from Delhi and Kolkata connect via Yangon as of October 2026, and Mandalay International Airport serves as a secondary entry point for itineraries focused on the north.
The airport sits about 16 km north of downtown Yangon and is reached by taxi. Most trips begin with one or two nights in Yangon before the first domestic leg. From Yangon, domestic flights connect to Nyaung-U Airport for Bagan, Mandalay International Airport and Heho Airport for Inle Lake — this is how the classic circuit is stitched together without long road days.
Do not plan the trip around overland travel between the main centres. Long-distance buses run on major routes — the Yangon–Bagan VIP bus takes about 9 to 10 hours, and the Mandalay–Bagan bus takes about 5 to 6 hours (fares as of October 2026: confirm at booking) — but current routes may involve reduced predictability. Check the current entry rules on the official government source before booking anything, as requirements can change.
Where to Base Yourself
Base yourself in the town or area closest to the sight you are there for, and match the stay type to your budget rather than chasing a single property across the country.
| Base | Best for | Stay type |
|---|---|---|
| Yangon | Couples, families | Upscale city properties near the colonial quarter and Shwedagon Pagoda |
| Nyaung-U, Bagan | Budget travellers, families | Mid-range guesthouses and small hotels close to the temple plain |
| Old Bagan | Couples | Boutique and upscale lodges within walking distance of the temples |
| Mandalay | Families, budget travellers | Mid-range city hotels near the Royal Palace and crafts quarter |
| Nyaungshwe, Inle Lake | Budget travellers, families | Budget guesthouses with easy access to lake boats and trekking routes |
| Inle Lake lakeside | Couples | Boat-accessible lodges among lake villages and floating gardens |
| Ngapali Beach | Couples, families | Optional coastal add-on for sea and boat activities |
Inle Lake rewards a split decision: Nyaungshwe for restaurants, trekking access and lower rates; a lakeside lodge if you want floating-garden views from your room. Bagan splits similarly between practical Nyaung-U and quieter Old Bagan. Confirm current rates and availability at booking, since services here still operate below historical levels.
A Route Worth Following
A sensible first route uses three or four bases across 10 to 14 nights: Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake, in that order. The sequence follows the most reliable domestic flight links and avoids doubling back.
- Yangon — 2 nights. Arrival buffer, Shwedagon Pagoda and the Circular Train. Keeps you close to the international gateway at the start and gives you a day to recover from the flight.
- Bagan — 3 nights. The temple plain by e-bike or private car, with sunset over the pagodas. Flying in from Yangon avoids a nine-hour road day.
- Mandalay — 2 nights. Royal and Buddhist sites and Ayeyarwady River travel. Placed between Bagan and the Shan hills so no leg doubles back on itself.
- Inle Lake — 3 nights. Boat days, lake villages and optional Kalaw or Pindaya trekking. Heho Airport keeps the onward domestic flight short.
- Ngapali Beach — 2 to 3 nights, optional. Add only if you want sea time and can spare the extra domestic flight.
Fourteen nights gives this route room to breathe. Ten nights works if you drop Mandalay or the beach add-on. Do not try to squeeze four bases into a week — each move costs most of a day once you factor in airport transfers and check-in.
Is Myanmar Right for You?
This destination suits travellers drawn to Buddhist heritage, temples, historic cities and cultural routes who are comfortable using domestic flights between the main centres. Culture-focused couples, solo travellers, photographers and families with older children tend to get the most from a Myanmar trip planning perspective.
It is less suited to anyone expecting pre-pandemic connectivity or consistent gateway operations, and to travellers who prefer moving between major destinations overland. The U.S. State Department lists Myanmar at Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing armed conflict, civil unrest, land mines, poor health infrastructure and wrongful detentions. Indian travellers should weigh that advisory carefully before deciding — and review their travel insurance cover accordingly.
Families and elders do well on the gentler options: the Yangon Circular Train, private-car sightseeing in Bagan and boat tours on Inle Lake all avoid trekking. The two-day Kalaw to Inle Lake trek requires real fitness and should be treated as a separate decision, not a default add-on.
Five Things to Know Before You Book
- Carry cash and a power bank. Card acceptance is limited outside Yangon. Plan your daily spend in cash and keep a backup charger for long travel days between towns.
- Follow pagoda etiquette. Remove shoes and socks before entering temple grounds, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and never point your feet towards a Buddha image or a monk.
- Take the safety advisory seriously. Stick to established tourist routes, use registered transport and avoid border regions. Emergency numbers: fire 191, highway emergencies 192.
- Agree transport prices before you travel. Fix the fare before taking tuk-tuks or shared taxis. In Yangon, Grab is used to hail taxis. E-bike rental — around US$5–10 per day as of October 2026 — is the standard way to cover Bagan independently.
- Keep connectivity flexible. Coverage and service quality vary outside the main towns. Download offline maps before departure and confirm your mobile roaming plan. Check the current entry rules on the official government source well before travel, as these can change without notice.
Once the plan feels right, compare the current Myanmar packages and pick the one that fits.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
