Why this route works
What makes this Mussoorie and Auli route different
This route keeps two bases instead of chasing four or five towns, so each stop gets real time. Mussoorie covers the easy first half with Kempty Falls, Gun Hill and Mall Road, while Auli covers the quieter second half at altitude.
Mussoorie handles the unhurried start: a morning at Kempty Falls, a cable-car ride up to Gun Hill, and an evening walk with bakery stops on Mall Road. Auli is the contrast, with a cable-car ride to the upper slopes, meadow walks and wide views of the high Himalayan peaks on clear days.
The road between the two is the long leg. Dehradun to Auli runs through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar and Joshimath, and takes most of a day. We plan breakfast, confluence and lunch stops so the drive reads as part of the trip and not as a transfer.
Is an Uttarakhand honeymoon right for you?
Uttarakhand suits couples who like mountains, cool weather and slow days, and who are happy to trade nightlife and beaches for quiet. Auli sits at high altitude, so the last three nights are cold even in summer, and roads can see snow from November onward.
If you would rather add river rafting, temples or wildlife, browse the wider Uttarakhand tour packages and pick a different route. This itinerary is deliberately light on activities and heavy on views, rest and time together.
Best time to visit Uttarakhand for this route
March to June and October to November give the most comfortable conditions for a Mussoorie and Auli trip. According to the state travel portal's seasonal guidance, summer is pleasant but busy, autumn is clear, and winter is cold and snowy in higher areas.
| Month | Temperature range | What it means for this trip |
|---|---|---|
| January-February | 0-15 C | Cold; snow at Auli, quieter crowds, lower prices |
| March-April | 15-30 C | Pleasant, medium crowds, good all-round window |
| May-June | 15-30 C | Peak season; book Auli stays early |
| July-September | 20-28 C | Heavy rain, landslide and road-closure risk; not advised |
| October-November | 10-25 C | Clear post-monsoon skies, medium crowds |
| December | 0-15 C | Cold and snowy; road closures possible in higher areas |
Monsoon rain from July to September can trigger landslides on mountain roads, so we do not schedule this route in those months. Snow can also close higher roads from November onward, so keep a day of flexibility in winter.
What the Uttarakhand trip cost covers
The package costs Rs.19,000 per person on twin sharing, land only, with flights and train fares excluded. That is the standard 3-4 star tier; the tiers below show how the same route moves with hotel category.
| Stay tier | Hotel category | Indicative price per person |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | 3-star | Approx Rs.14,500 |
| Standard (this package) | 3-4 star | Rs.19,000 |
| Premium | 5-star | Approx Rs.30,500 |
The package price is quoted per person, so the total for two is double that figure, plus your travel to Dehradun. Your final Uttarakhand trip cost shifts with travel month, hotel category and add-ons such as a private dinner or photographer. Ask for the inclusions sheet before you pay, and confirm current prices for anything not listed here at booking.
Moments to plan around
A few moments on this route are worth protecting in the schedule, because each depends on the day and the weather.
- First evening walk, Day 1: Camel's Back Road in Mussoorie, once the climb from Dehradun is done and the light is low.
- Waterfall morning, Day 2: Kempty Falls before the day-trip crowds arrive.
- Cable-car morning, Day 4: the Joshimath-Auli ride, best taken early when the sky is clearest.
- Private dinner, Day 5: a candlelight dinner at the Auli resort on the free day, to be confirmed at booking.
Why this route suits couples
This route suits couples because the pace is slow, the settings are quiet and the two bases give very different scenery. You are not repacking every night, and most afternoons are free.
- Privacy: Auli is a small mountain plateau, not a crowded town, so evenings are quiet.
- Setting: Kempty Falls and hill-station lanes in Mussoorie, then meadow slopes and high peaks at Auli.
- Pace: only one long driving day each way, with a full buffer day at Auli.
Romantic highlights of this itinerary
Six experiences carry the trip, each tied to a named place on the route.
- Kempty Falls: walk down to the pools and spend about an hour at the water.
- Gun Hill cable car: a short ride above Mussoorie for valley views.
- Mall Road walk: an easy evening stroll with bakery and tea stops.
- Devprayag confluence: a halt on the drive where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet.
- Joshimath-Auli cable car: the ride up to the upper slopes and meadow trail.
- Candlelight dinner at Auli: arranged at the resort on the free day, subject to confirmation.
How the days flow
Days are built with late starts, long lunches and early evenings, except for the two driving days. Day 3 and Day 6 involve long road time, so those start early and carry the most movement.
Days 1, 2, 4 and 5 are deliberately light. You get a sunset slot on most evenings, and Day 5 has no fixed departure so you can sleep in, walk, ski in winter or stay in. If wind shuts the Auli cable car on Day 4, Day 5 absorbs it.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples, the room type and setting matter more than the star rating. Ask for a valley-facing room, a balcony, and a location with easy access to the cable-car base or Mall Road.
In Mussoorie, a hill-view room away from the busiest stretch of Mall Road gives quieter nights. At Auli, a resort close to the slopes saves cold walks after dark. We describe each category at booking and do not name properties here unless confirmed.
Best months for a couple's trip
March to June and October to November work best for most couples. Choose winter only if snow and skiing at Auli are the point of the trip, and accept that cold and road delays come with it.
Spring is good for milder days and flowering slopes, while autumn gives the clearest mountain views. Prices peak in May and June and run lower in the winter months, as per the state seasonal guidance.
Add-ons worth considering
A few add-ons suit this route, each fitting a particular day.
- Private candlelight dinner: best on Day 5 at Auli, when there is no early start the next morning.
- Photographer: a short session at Kempty Falls on Day 2 or the Auli meadow on Day 4.
- Skiing and snow activity: only in the winter window, on the Day 5 free day.
- Room decoration: flowers or a cake on arrival, requested at booking.
Where you will stay in Mussoorie and Auli
The package uses standard 3-4 star hotels: two nights in a hill-view hotel in Mussoorie and three nights in a mountain resort near Auli. Each category is described below.
- Budget 3-star (approx Rs.14,500 per person): clean, simple rooms with basic views and fewer extras.
- Standard 3-4 star (Rs.19,000 per person, this package): comfortable rooms, hill or valley outlook, in-house dinner.
- Premium 5-star (approx Rs.30,500 per person): larger rooms, better views and more on-site facilities.
All tiers are indicative and per person; exact properties are confirmed at booking.
Getting to Mussoorie and Auli: access and logistics
Dehradun is the entry point, reached by Dehradun Airport (DED) or the rail network, and every transfer on this trip is by road. Road access from Delhi to Dehradun is stated as roughly 2.5 hours after the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is completed, and the expressway was still under construction as of June 2026.
Mussoorie is a short climb from Dehradun, while Auli needs a long day through Rishikesh, Devprayag and Joshimath. Snow can close higher roads from November onward, and monsoon rain can cause landslides in July and August. Mobile signal is patchy on the higher stretches, so share the itinerary with family in advance. Permits, if any apply, are confirmed at booking.
