Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Corbett and Nainital family trip include?
This trip pairs a forest safari at Corbett with three relaxed days around Naini Lake in Nainital, over 6 nights on standard 3-4 star stays. Breakfast and dinner are covered, and one free day is built in.
The nights split into two near Corbett and four in Nainital. Corbett offers jeep safaris through forest habitat known for tigers and other wild animals. Nainital adds Naini Lake, boating and Mall Road at hill-station pace. Day 6 is kept free, so nobody is rushed.

Why does this route work for families with kids and elders?
Short transfers and early dinners make this route easy on children and grandparents. The longest drive is Corbett to Nainital on Day 3, and it is broken with a tea and washroom stop.
Only Day 2 starts early, for the safari. Every other morning begins after a proper breakfast. Dinners wrap up by about 8pm, which suits small children and elders who prefer an early night. A free afternoon on Day 4 and a fully free Day 6 keep the pace gentle. The Bhimtal and Sattal day on Day 5 is a short, lake-side outing, not a sightseeing marathon.
Who is this trip for, by age group?
Each age group gets something of its own, and most activities are shared. Here is how the days work for each.
Younger children
- The Day 2 jeep safari, with deer, birds and a chance of larger animals
- Boating on Naini Lake and pony rides along the lake edge
- The island aquarium at Bhimtal
- Free play time at the hotel on Day 1 and Day 2 evenings
Teenagers
- Safari photography and spotting tracks and calls with the forest guide
- Snow View ropeway and the Tiffin Top or Land's End walk
- Birdwatching along the forest edge at Sattal
- Time on Mall Road and at the Tibetan Market
Grandparents
- Naina Devi Temple beside the lake, reached with very little walking
- Slow lakeside evenings on Mall Road with benches and tea stops
- A full free day on Day 6 with no fixed sightseeing
- Vehicle-based sightseeing, so steps and long walks stay optional
Pace, rest and daily driving times
Expect one main activity per day with a rest window after lunch. The only early start is the Day 2 safari. Every other day begins with a normal breakfast, and evenings end early.
The Corbett to Nainital transfer on Day 3 is the longest drive. Nainital to Bhimtal and Sattal is a short day trip of roughly 22 km each way to Bhimtal, with Sattal close by. Roads in the hills are winding, so plan for slower speeds than the distance suggests. Strollers work on Mall Road and the lakeside, but hotel lanes and hill paths can be uneven. Ask at booking if you need a wheelchair-friendly property, because step-free access varies by hotel.
Rooms, meals and comfort for families
Standard 3-4 star hotels usually offer family rooms or two connecting rooms, and both can be requested at booking. Availability depends on the property and the season, so confirm room type early, especially in May and June.
Vegetarian food is easy to find across Uttarakhand, including local dishes such as Phaanu, Chainsoo and Kafuli. Dal, roti and sabzi meals are served at roadside dhabas and hotel restaurants. Plain rice, dal and simple snacks work well for fussy young eaters. Jain meals are not guaranteed everywhere, so request them in advance and confirm at booking.
Travelling with kids and elders: five practical tips
- Pack layers. Corbett mornings and Nainital evenings turn cool even in summer, so carry light jackets for everyone.
- Carry ID for every traveller. Hotels and safari permits ask for identity proof, and this includes children. Keep originals or clear copies handy.
- Plan for motion sickness. The Nainital hill road is winding. Seat children at the front, keep water and light snacks ready, and carry tablets if your doctor advises them.
- Keep medicines in hand luggage. Carry elders' prescription drugs and basic children's medicines. Forest zones have no shops, and towns have pharmacies only on the main stretches.
- Download offline maps. Mobile connectivity is patchy inside Corbett forest zones and on some hill stretches, so save maps before leaving Ramnagar.
Where do families stay in Corbett and Nainital?
Families stay in standard 3-4 star properties: a wildlife resort near Corbett for the first nights and a hotel in Nainital for the rest. Budget and premium tiers are available if you want to change the price level.
| Stay tier | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.15,000 | Clean, basic rooms; fewer facilities; simple meals |
| Standard 3-4 star (default) | Rs.20,000 | Comfortable rooms, in-house restaurant, family or connecting room options |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.32,000 | Larger rooms, better views, wider facilities; subject to availability |
These figures are indicative and derived from the listed package price. Exact hotels are shared at booking, and no property is named here until confirmed.
Getting to Corbett and Nainital, and local conditions
Nainital is about 35 km from Kathgodam railhead, and Pantnagar Airport serves the Kumaon side. Most hill destinations need onward road travel from the airport or station, so this package includes private vehicle transfers.
Monsoon (July to September) brings landslide and road-closure risk on mountain routes, while winter can bring snow to higher areas. Corbett safari zones can also close for part of the monsoon. Mobile signal is weak in forest zones. No special permit is needed for Nainital itself, and safari entry and zone fees are paid locally. Confirm current rules and zone availability at booking.
When is the best time to visit Uttarakhand for this trip?
October to June suits Corbett and Nainital best. March to June is the summer window with pleasant hill weather and school holidays, while October and November bring clearer conditions and medium crowds.
May and June are peak months with the highest prices, so book early. July to September is monsoon, with heavy rain and lower prices, but road disruption is likely. December to February is cold, and higher areas can see snow. Prices are lower then, though Nainital evenings turn very chilly for young children and elders.
What does a Uttarakhand holiday cost for a family?
The listed cost is Rs.20,000 per person in 2026, on twin sharing, land only, with flights excluded. It covers standard 3-4 star stays, daily breakfast and dinner, private transfers and the listed sightseeing.
Safari jeep charges, entry permits and zone fees are paid locally and vary by zone. Prices rise in May and June. A premium hotel category or an extra safari slot raises the total. Children sharing a bed with parents often get a reduced rate, but each hotel sets its own age policy, so confirm at booking. CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
