Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Sri Lanka family holiday cover?
This trip covers seven nights across Kandy, the Yala area and the south coast, with a jeep safari, a temple visit and a free afternoon every few days. Transfers are kept short, dinners are early, and each day leaves room for a nap or pool time.
- Nights 1-2: Kandy, with the Temple of the Tooth and the lake.
- Night 3: Nuwara Eliya, in tea country.
- Nights 4-5: near Yala National Park, with a dawn jeep safari.
- Nights 6-7: south coast, with Galle Fort and beach time.
The route moves from cooler hills to the dry southeast and then to the coast, so the busiest days come in the middle and the last two days are the slowest. This Sri Lanka holiday is built around that rhythm.
Why does this route suit children and grandparents?
The route starts in Kandy, which sits in the hills and is cooler than the coast, so the first two days are gentle after a flight. The drive south is broken into short legs with tea-estate, viewpoint and lunch stops, and beach time at the end lets everyone slow down before the flight home.
Each stretch of the trip has a reason for the family:
- Kandy gives grandparents a temple visit and a flat lakeside walk, with the Day 2 afternoon kept free.
- Tea country gives children a factory walk and cool air, which is a change from the heat.
- Yala gives the whole family one shared activity, a jeep safari with elephants, leopards, deer and birds on the list of possible sightings.
- The south coast gives everyone two quiet nights with no packing or long driving in between.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets at least one activity that is made for it, and the shared moments, such as the Yala safari, keep the family together.
Younger children
- Jeep safari in Yala, looking for elephants, deer and birds.
- Tea-factory walk in the hill country.
- Beach and pool time on the south coast.
Teenagers
- Spotting leopards and birds on the safari with a camera or phone.
- Viewpoint stop at Ella Gap and a short stop at Ravana Falls.
- Walking the ramparts at Galle Fort.
Grandparents
- Temple of the Tooth visit, which holds the Sacred Tooth Relic.
- Flat walk beside Kandy Lake.
- Quiet tea-estate stop and long rest windows at the hotel.
Pace, rest and daily logistics
The daily rhythm is one main activity in the morning, lunch, a rest or free afternoon, and an early dinner. Most days have a driving leg of a few hours at most, with Day 4 the longest.
- Hill-country roads are winding, so keep motion-sickness tablets handy and take the front seat for anyone who gets queasy.
- The Yala safari starts at first light, so the afternoon of Day 5 is kept free for sleep and pool time.
- Galle Fort involves walking on uneven stone, so grandparents can see the ramparts in a shorter loop and wait in a cafe.
- Day 8 includes a buffer for traffic before the airport drop.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Family rooms or connecting rooms can be requested at each hotel and are confirmed at booking, since availability varies by season. Where possible, we ask for ground-floor rooms or lift access for grandparents.
Vegetarian food is easy to find, with rice and vegetable curries, hoppers and string hoppers on most menus, and hotels can usually prepare simple child-friendly dishes such as plain rice, noodles or toast. Jain meals cannot be confirmed from available sources, so tell us your requirement at booking and we will check hotel by hotel.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips
- Carry age proof: a passport or birth certificate for every child, since hotels and park operators may ask for it.
- Pack for two climates: light cotton for the coast and Yala, and a warm layer for Kandy and Nuwara Eliya evenings.
- Cover up for temples: shoulders and knees covered for the Temple of the Tooth, and shoes off at the entrance.
- Protect against mosquitoes: dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases occur in Sri Lanka, so use repellent and long sleeves at dusk.
- Bring your regular medicines: including fever, stomach and motion-sickness tablets, as pharmacies are thinner near Yala.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka from India?
December to April is the better window for Kandy, Yala and the south coast, with low to moderate rain across those months. Temperatures run roughly 22-34 C, warmer on the coast and cooler in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
| Months | Conditions on this route | Crowds and prices |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Low to moderate rain, 22-32 C; the northeast monsoon mainly affects the north and east | Medium crowds; prices peak in December, January and February |
| March to April | Moderate rain with rising heat and humidity, 24-34 C; short inter-monsoon showers | Medium crowds and prices |
| May to September | Southwest monsoon brings rain to the south, west and central regions; heavy in May and June | Lower prices; crowds low in May to July |
| October to November | Heavy rain, frequent showers and thunderstorms before the northeast monsoon | Low crowds and prices |
If your school holidays fall in May to June or October to November, expect wet spells and ask us how the safari timing is handled. If you are weighing visa timing for your dates, the Sri Lanka visa for Indians guide explains the application route.

Where the family stays: Kandy, Yala and the south coast
Stays are Standard 3-4 star hotels in each area, chosen for lifts or ground-floor rooms where possible, family or connecting rooms and an on-site restaurant. No hotel brands are fixed in this page copy, and exact properties are confirmed at booking.
- Kandy (2 nights): a city hotel with family rooms, close to the lake and the Temple of the Tooth.
- Nuwara Eliya (1 night): a hill-country hotel in tea-estate surroundings, with heating for cool evenings.
- Yala and Tissamaharama (2 nights): a wildlife lodge or hotel used as the base for game drives.
- South coast (2 nights): a beach hotel near Galle and Mirissa with a pool.
A Budget 3-star category keeps rooms simpler and a little further from the main sights. The Premium 5-star category adds larger rooms, bigger pools and more dining choice, which is useful if grandparents want extra comfort.
Visa, money and flights for Indian travellers to Sri Lanka
Indian passport holders need a travel authorisation or visa for Sri Lanka, applied for through the official government portal before departure. Check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, as both can change. The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee; carry some cash for small purchases and tips, and note that UPI acceptance is reported as growing at selected tourist establishments (October 2026).
Flights from major Indian cities land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), about 30-35 km from Colombo city centre. Flight time is typically short from southern cities and a little longer from Delhi or Mumbai; confirm the duration and fare when you book. Fares and airlines are not included in this package price.
