Journey notes
Why this route works
Why does this itinerary fit travellers from Chennai?
This family itinerary fits Chennai travellers because flights from Chennai International Airport reach Malé in under four hours, reducing travel fatigue for children. The 6-night duration gives families enough time to settle in, try reef activities, and still have rest days without rushing.
Chennai to Malé routes operate via one-stop connections through Colombo or Kuala Lumpur on most days. The short flight time is a practical advantage for families travelling with young children. Visa on arrival removes the need for a pre-trip consulate visit, which saves time for working parents.
What experiences does this package include?
This family package includes resort accommodation with family room or connecting room options, snorkelling, a glass-bottom boat ride, a dolphin-watching cruise, a visit to a local Maldivian island, daily breakfast, and return transfers from Malé to the resort.
- 6 nights in a family room or two connecting rooms at a Maldives resort
- Glass-bottom boat ride over the coral reef for all ages
- Dolphin-watching cruise in the Indian Ocean lagoon
- Guided snorkelling session with equipment for adults and older children
- Half-day excursion to a local inhabited Maldivian island
- Daily breakfast for all family members at the resort restaurant
- Return speedboat transfers between Velana International Airport and the resort
Who is this package best suited for?
This package is best suited for families of three to five members departing from Chennai, including parents with children aged five and above. The itinerary balances structured activities with free resort time, making it workable for families with mixed age groups.
Families travelling during Indian school holidays in May or December should note that May falls outside the recommended dry season. December travel aligns with both school holidays and the dry season, though prices are higher in that month.
How do the days unfold on this trip?
Day 1 covers the Chennai departure and resort check-in. Days 2 through 6 rotate between reef activities, island excursions, and free resort time. Day 7 covers resort checkout and the return flight to Chennai International Airport.
Day 1 — Chennai to Malé and resort check-in: Chennai International Airport is the starting point for the family's flight to Velana International Airport. The family transfers by speedboat to the resort and checks in before dinner.
Day 2 — Glass-bottom boat ride: A glass-bottom boat is a vessel with a transparent hull section that allows passengers to view the reef without entering the water. The family boards the boat in the morning for a 60-minute reef viewing session.
Day 3 — Snorkelling session: The resort snorkelling session is a guided activity suitable for adults and children aged eight and above. Younger children may observe from the boat or shallow beach entry points.
Day 4 — Dolphin-watching cruise: A dolphin-watching cruise is a late-afternoon boat excursion to open water areas where spinner dolphins are commonly sighted. The cruise lasts approximately 90 minutes.
Day 5 — Local island excursion: A local inhabited island is a Maldivian community island where families can see traditional architecture, local markets, and a working fishing harbour. The half-day excursion includes a speedboat ride of 15 to 30 minutes each way.
Day 6 — Free day at resort: The resort pool and beach are available for unscheduled family leisure on Day 6. Optional water sports and children's club activities are available at extra cost.
Day 7 — Checkout and return to Chennai: The family checks out before noon and transfers to Velana International Airport for the return flight to Chennai.
What should you know before booking?
Families travelling from Chennai should confirm that the resort offers family room or connecting room configurations before booking. Not all Maldives resorts accommodate families with young children, so resort selection matters for this package type.
Indian passport holders receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana International Airport. Each family member, including children, requires a valid passport. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended, as hospital facilities in the Maldives are limited outside Malé.
