The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 6-night journey through Leh Ladakh— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What a Leh Ladakh honeymoon trip covers
This route is Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and back to Leh over six nights, with a standard 3-4 star hotel category in Leh and camp or guesthouse stays in the valleys. Land arrangements for two are priced at Rs.26,000 per person on twin sharing.
Most Ladakh circuits push Leh, Nubra and Pangong into back-to-back driving days. Here, the first two days stay in and around Leh, Nubra gets two nights, and Pangong gets one night so you see the lake at sunset and again at sunrise. Every transfer is private, so you can stop for photographs or tea without a group waiting.
Travellers from across India reach Leh by air, usually from Delhi. For other routes and trip lengths, see our Leh Ladakh tour packages.
Why this suits couples
This trip suits couples because Ladakh's best settings are quiet by nature: a lake with almost no one at sunrise, dunes at Hunder in the evening, and a night sky with very little light pollution. Three reasons stand out.
- Privacy: a private vehicle all the way and no fixed group timings, so mornings start when you want them to.
- Setting: Pangong Tso and the Nubra Valley are open, high-altitude landscapes where you can spend an hour just sitting together.
- Pace: Day 1 is rest only, Day 2 stays near Leh, and Day 4 is a free day in Nubra, which keeps altitude fatigue in check.
Moments to plan around
The best moments on this route are tied to specific days and times of day. Planning them in advance, and telling us if you want any arranged, makes them easier to protect.
- First sunset in Leh (Day 1): a short drive up to Shanti Stupa, a white hilltop dome with a wide view over the town.
- Sunset over Leh (Day 2): Namgyal Tsemo Monastery sits above Leh Palace and is associated with evening views over the old town.
- Dune evening at Hunder (Day 3): the walk to the sand dunes after you check in, before the cold sets in.
- Sunrise at Pangong Tso (Day 6 morning): the lake changes colour in the first hour of light, so keep your early alarm and skip the late breakfast that day.
Romantic highlights on the route
These are the specific experiences couples usually remember from this trip. Each one maps to a day in the itinerary below.
- Pangong Tso at dusk and dawn: one overnight at the lake means two different lights on the same water.
- Stargazing at high altitude: clear Nubra and Pangong nights are among the easiest places in India to see a dense sky.
- Khardung La crossing: the drive up to the pass and down into Nubra is the route's scenic high point.
- Hunder sand dunes: a cold-desert stretch where an optional camel ride is available locally.
- Diskit Monastery and the Maitreya Buddha statue: a quiet stop above the valley floor on the way in.
- Leh Market and Old Town lanes: an easy walk for Pashmina, prayer wheels and a thukpa or momos lunch.
How the days flow
The days are paced for two people, with one long driving day and several light ones. Altitude is the reason for the order: Leh first, then Nubra, then Pangong.
Day 1 is arrival and rest, because Leh sits at a high altitude and fly-in travellers are advised to rest 24 to 48 hours before going higher. Day 2 stays local. Day 3 crosses Khardung La. Day 4 is deliberately free. Day 5 is the longest drive, from Nubra to Pangong via the Shyok route. Day 6 starts with sunrise at the lake, then a drive back to Leh via Chang La. Day 7 is departure.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples, the stay that matters is the one with the right view, privacy and access. Room category matters less than where the room sits and how far it is from the nearest meal.
- In Leh: choose a hotel in the Main Bazaar or Fort Road area for restaurants within walking distance, or Changspa for a slightly quieter lane. Ask for a room with a mountain-facing window and a heater.
- In Nubra: a camp or guesthouse at Hunder or Diskit puts you close to the dunes. Request an attached bathroom and confirm hot water timings.
- At Pangong: lakeside camps are basic by design. Ask for a tent facing the water and extra blankets, since nights are cold.
Best months for a couple's trip
June to September is the practical window for this route. Leh runs about 10 to 28 C in June and 15 to 33 C in July and August, and both highways are generally open.
| Month | Leh temperature range | Crowds and prices | What it means for a couple |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 5 to 22 C | Low crowds, low prices | Cold nights; passes may still be reopening |
| June | 10 to 28 C | Medium crowds, medium prices | Comfortable weather, roads generally open |
| July and August | 15 to 33 C | High crowds, peak prices | Warmest; book early; monsoon landslides can affect Manali-Leh |
| September | 8 to 25 C | Low crowds, medium prices | Quieter lake and valley, sharper evenings |
| October | 0 to 18 C | Low crowds, low prices | Very cold nights; closures possible late in the month |
November to April is cold, with snow able to close high passes, so this route is not recommended then.
Add-ons worth considering
These are optional extras that fit this route. Prices depend on the property and season, so confirm at booking.
- Private candlelight dinner: best in Leh on Day 2 or Day 6, where hotels can set it up more reliably than high-altitude camps.
- Room decoration and cake: suited to Day 1 or the Hunder night, with notice at booking.
- Photographer: most useful at Pangong on Day 5 evening and Day 6 sunrise, when the light is best.
- Spa session in Leh: a good fit for the Day 6 return, after two long driving days.
- Camel ride at Hunder: an optional local activity on Day 4.
Camps and hotels on the Leh, Nubra and Pangong route
Stays on this route are in three settings: a Leh hotel, a Nubra Valley camp or guesthouse, and a Pangong lakeside camp. The standard version of this package uses a 3-4 star category.
| Stay tier | Indicative price per person (twin sharing, land only) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.19,500 | Simple Leh hotel, basic camps in the valleys |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.26,000 | Comfortable Leh hotel, deluxe camp or guesthouse at Nubra, lakeside camp at Pangong |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.41,500 | Higher-category Leh property, better camp tents with more comfort |
Treat the budget and premium figures as indicative only. Property availability changes by season, and the final quote is confirmed at booking.
Access, permits and altitude on this Leh Ladakh route
Leh is reached by air through Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Delhi, or by road via the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways when they are open. Both open for the season in spring and can close with snow. Nubra and Pangong need permits that your operator usually arranges, and the Ladakh administration was reviewing the permit system in August 2026, so confirm the current rules at booking. Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500 m, so rest on Day 1 and drink water. Mobile connectivity is reliable in Leh but patchy in Nubra and Pangong.
Tell us your travel dates and anything you want planned as a surprise, and we will shape this route around the two of you.

FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
