Journey notes
Why this route works
What is included in this Kenya family tour package?
This Kenya family tour package splits the stay into three nights in Nairobi, three nights in Amboseli and a final night back in Nairobi, so you unpack only three times. The price of Rs.83,000 per person covers twin-sharing rooms in Standard 3-4 star stays, a private safari vehicle, the listed game drives and transfers. International flights are not included.
Nairobi gives you the Giraffe Centre, an elephant orphanage visit and a half-day drive in Nairobi National Park, all inside city limits. Amboseli adds open plains, large elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views. The road from Nairobi to Amboseli takes about four hours with a comfort stop.
Kid and elder logistics
Parents and grandparents can expect one private vehicle for the whole group, so seating is flexible and nobody is split across cars. Window seats for children and a front or easy-step seat for elders can be requested at booking.
- Seats and rooms: Family or connecting rooms are possible in general terms; confirm the exact room type and third-bed policy at booking.
- Stroller and wheelchair access: Hotels in Nairobi usually have lifts or ground-floor rooms, but safari lodges often have steps and paths. Foldable strollers fit in the vehicle. Tell us about any wheelchair need early so we can check access.
- Rest and snack stops: The Nairobi to Amboseli drive of about four hours includes a comfort stop. Keep snacks, water and wet wipes within reach in the vehicle.
- Safari vehicle step: Safari vehicles sit high, so tell us if any traveller finds climbing in difficult.
Why this works for families
Most first-time Kenya itineraries cover three or four parks in a week and spend half of each day in the vehicle. This route keeps to one safari park, which means shorter transfers, a regular rest window after lunch and the same room for three nights in Amboseli.
- Game drives are timed for early morning and late afternoon, with the hot midday hours kept free.
- A private vehicle means you can stop for a washroom break or end a drive when the youngest is tired.
- Dinner can be taken early, and children's meals can be asked for at check-in.
- One afternoon every few days is left open for pool time, a nap or a slow walk around the lodge.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets something of its own on this route, while the main activities stay shared.
Younger children
- Feeding giraffes from the raised platform at the Nairobi Giraffe Centre.
- Spotting giraffe and buffalo on the half-day drive in Nairobi National Park.
- Watching elephant herds from the vehicle in Amboseli.
Teenagers
- Longer game drives in Amboseli with the chance to look for Kilimanjaro on clear mornings.
- Photography from the open-top viewing roof of the safari vehicle.
- Asking the driver-guide how guides track and read animal behaviour.
Grandparents
- Seated viewing at the Giraffe Centre and from the vehicle, with little walking.
- Unhurried midday rests at the lodge between drives.
- Lodge garden time and Kilimanjaro views from the grounds on clear days.
Pace, rest and logistics
The daily rhythm is simple: an early game drive, lunch, a long rest and a gentler late-afternoon drive. Drives run two to three hours, and the longest road day is the four-hour transfer to Amboseli.
Rest windows are built in after lunch each day, so younger children can nap and elders can recover before the next drive. On Day 6 only one drive is planned and the rest of the day is open. Nairobi days are lighter still, with the Giraffe Centre and orphanage on one morning and the park drive on another.
When is the best time to visit Kenya from India?
The drier months for this route are January to March and July to October, when rainfall is low and park tracks are firm. According to the destination research for Kenya, April and May bring the long rains, and heavy rain can affect road conditions and game viewing in those two months.
| Period | Rainfall | Crowds and prices | Fit for this family trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| January to February | Very low | High crowds, peak prices | Good weather, book early |
| March | Low to moderate | Medium | Good, rain starts late in the month |
| April to May | Heavy to very heavy | Low crowds, low prices | Roads can be difficult, not ideal with elders |
| June | Moderate | Low crowds, medium prices | Cool and workable |
| July to August | Very low to low | High crowds, peak prices | Dry, school holidays from India line up well |
| September to October | Very low to moderate | Medium | Good balance of weather and cost |
| November to December | Heavy in November, moderate in December | Low in November, peak in December | Short rains, check conditions before booking |
Rooms, meals and comfort
Hotels in Nairobi and lodges in Amboseli are Standard 3-4 star category. Family rooms, connecting rooms or two twin rooms can be arranged in general terms; confirm the exact option and third-bed policy at booking.
Vegetarian food is available in Nairobi and Mombasa, and safari lodges offer vegetarian and vegan menus with a day's notice. Nairobi also has Indian restaurants serving dosas, thalis and Gujarati snacks. Children's meals and early dinners can be requested at check-in. Jain meals should be requested at booking.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips
- Pack for two climates. Nairobi sits at altitude and can be cool in the evenings, while Amboseli is warmer and dustier. Take layers and a light jacket.
- Cover up against mosquitoes. Light, loose cotton clothes, long sleeves and full-length trousers work well. Add a hat and closed shoes for game drives.
- Carry documents. Keep printed copies of every passport and each child's ID, and confirm the current entry rules before booking flights.
- Bring medicines. Carry prescription medicines in original packaging, plus a small kit for fever, stomach upsets and motion sickness.
- Confirm age rules. Child ages affect pricing, bed use and park fees, so share each child's age at booking.
Where you stay in Nairobi and Amboseli
You stay in a Nairobi city hotel for the first three nights and the last night, and in a safari lodge near Amboseli National Park for three nights. Both are Standard 3-4 star category on twin-sharing basis, and no brand is named here.
Indicative price tiers per person, for context only:
- Budget 3-star: approx Rs.62,500. Simpler hotels and lodges, with basic rooms and fewer facilities.
- Standard 3-4 star (this package): Rs.83,000. Comfortable rooms, on-site dining and a pool or garden in most properties.
- Premium 5-star: approx Rs.1,33,000. Larger rooms, more facilities and often better park views.
Entry, money and flights for Indian travellers to Kenya
Indian passport holders need a Kenya travel authorisation before arrival; the Kenya visa for Indians page explains the application route, and you should check the official portal for the current fee. The local currency is the Kenyan shilling; confirm the current exchange rate with your forex provider before departure. Direct and one-stop flights from major Indian cities to Nairobi vary by route, so confirm the typical flight duration and fares with us or your airline at booking. Park payments are described as made through KWSPay linked to eCitizen, with M-Pesa or card.
The research also suggests 10 to 12 days for a trip covering Nairobi, several parks and the coast, so browse our Kenya tour packages if you later want to add a coast stay or a second park.
What does a Kenya trip cost for an Indian family?
The package price is Rs.83,000 per person, land only, on twin sharing. Flights, the Kenya visa, travel insurance and personal spending are extra. Confirm child pricing and the third-bed policy at booking, since these depend on the children's ages and the lodge.
As of 2026, the Kenya Wildlife Service fee list in our research shows USD 90 per adult per day for Amboseli National Park and USD 80 per adult per day for Nairobi National Park. Whether park fees are included in your quote, and at what rate for children, is to be confirmed at booking.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
