Journey notes
Why this route works
Honeymoon in Kenya: what this route covers
This route uses two bases, the Maasai Mara and Diani Beach, with one night in Nairobi on arrival. The Mara gets three nights, so the balloon morning is not squeezed between transfers, and the coast gets two nights of slow time.
Movement between bases is by scheduled light aircraft, not long road drives. The Nairobi to Mara flight from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes. That is why a Kenya honeymoon tour package like this one fits into a week.
Who this trip suits
It suits couples who want a safari and a beach in the same week, without a full wildlife circuit. Three Mara nights allow two game drives a day, a balloon flight and one quiet afternoon. The coast then gives a reset before the flight home.
It is not built for travellers who want Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Samburu in one trip. A balanced route covering Nairobi, several safari regions and the coast generally needs 10 to 12 nights.
Best time to visit Kenya from India
The cool dry season from June to October and the short dry season from December to March give the most reliable safari conditions. A balloon flight needs calm, clear early mornings, so these windows suit it best. January, February, July and August are the busiest and dearest months.
| Period | Weather and demand | Effect on this trip |
|---|---|---|
| December to March | Short dry season, rain low, January and February peak prices | Good game viewing, higher rates in January and February |
| April to May | Long rains, very heavy in April, low crowds and prices | Road conditions can suffer in the Mara |
| June to October | Cool dry season, low rain, July and August peak prices | Reliable balloon weather, camp rates rise sharply |
| November | Short rains, heavy rain, low crowds and prices | Greener country, a real chance of wet mornings |
Safari prices run 25 to 40 percent higher in July to October, and camp prices 40 to 80 percent higher than in low season, according to published safari booking guides. Treat both as indicative and confirm at booking.
What this trip costs and what moves the price
The listed land-only price is Rs.80,500 per person on twin sharing, flights excluded, so the total for two is double that figure. Your travel month and your stay category change the final cost the most.
- Maasai Mara entry fee: as of 2026, Kenya Wildlife Service sources list USD 100 per adult per day from January to June and USD 200 per adult per day from July to December.
- Balloon seats and light-aircraft sectors: both depend on the date and the camp, so confirm current prices at booking.
- Stay category: indicative per-person tiers are Budget 3-star about Rs.60,500, Standard 4-star Rs.80,500 and Premium 5-star about Rs.1,29,000.
Ask for a quote that shows park fees, internal flights and the balloon flight on separate lines, so you can see which part moves with the season.
Moments to plan around
Four moments are worth planning your days around.
- The balloon launch, Day 3: a pre-dawn pickup, launch at first light, then a bush breakfast on the plains.
- First sundowner, Day 2: a stop inside the reserve on the first evening game drive, after the flight from Nairobi.
- Private camp dinner, Day 3 or 4: best after the balloon morning, since the pre-dawn start makes the evening naturally quiet. To be confirmed at booking.
- First swim at Diani, Day 5: the afternoon you land on the coast, with nothing scheduled.
Why this suits couples
The balloon flight is a shared, quiet hour above open savannah, not a crowded vehicle stop. Entry passes to the Mara are valid only from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so the balloon is one of the few ways to see the reserve outside the normal drive window.
Pace is the second reason. There are two flights, no long road days, and Days 4 and 6 have long free stretches. The third is the contrast: open savannah first, then a calm coastline, so the week does not repeat itself.
Romantic highlights
- Sunrise balloon flight: about an hour over the Mara plains at first light, ending with a bush breakfast.
- Sundowner in the reserve: a drinks stop on the first evening drive, with the light low over the grass.
- Private dinner at camp: a table set apart from the main dining area, arranged on request.
- Picnic lunch on the plains: Day 4 is a full-day drive with lunch eaten in the reserve, not back at camp.
- Diani beach afternoon: a first swim and a walk on the sand after the Mara to coast transfer.
- Swahili heritage walk: an evening walk through the old coastal town on Day 6, followed by dinner.
How the days flow
Each day has a clear anchor and a loose rest of the day. Day 1 is arrival and sleep. Day 2 is a morning flight and one late-afternoon drive.
Day 3 starts before dawn and ends early. Day 4 is the only full safari day, with a 6 am drive and a slow afternoon. Day 5 is a transfer day with a free evening. Day 6 has no fixed start. Day 7 is checkout, with a day room possible if your flight leaves at night.
Choosing the right stay style
In the Mara, couples should look at room position more than room size. Ask for a tent or room with a private deck, a view over open grassland and a short walk to the dining area, since camps often escort guests after dark.
On the coast, ask for a room close to the beach with a quiet block, not one beside the pool bar. Diani is a long beach, so the distance from your room to the sand matters more than the star rating.
Add-ons worth considering
- Private dinner at camp: adds a set table and quiet service. Best on Day 3 or 4.
- Spa session at the beach resort: fits Day 6, the free day. Pricing is set by the property, so confirm current prices at booking.
- Photographer for the balloon morning or beach: best booked ahead, since availability is limited.
- Reef trip from Diani: a glass-bottom boat or snorkelling outing on the morning of Day 6, bookable locally.
Where you stay: Mara camp and Diani beach resort
You sleep in three types of property: a Nairobi city hotel, a Maasai Mara safari camp and a Diani beach resort. All sit in the Standard 3-4 star band that the listed price covers.
| Stay tier | Indicative price per person | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | About Rs.60,500 | Simpler camps and hotels, fewer room upgrades |
| Standard 4-star (default) | Rs.80,500 | Comfortable tented camp or lodge, resort room at Diani |
| Premium 5-star | About Rs.1,29,000 | Larger tents or suites, better positions, more inclusive meals |
Tiers are indicative and per person on twin sharing. Specific properties are confirmed at booking.
Visa, money and flights for Indian travellers going to Kenya
Indian passport holders apply for Kenya's electronic travel authorisation online before departure. Check the official government portal for the current fee, and see our Kenya visa for Indians guide for the steps. The local currency is the Kenyan shilling, and we do not quote a rate here since it changes daily.
Park payments run through the Kenya Wildlife Service system, which accepts M-Pesa or card. Flights from major Indian cities to Nairobi (NBO) usually involve one stop. Confirm timing and fares with the airline or your agent, and browse our Kenya tour packages for other routes.
Pack layers, since Nairobi is cooler in the evenings and Mara mornings are cold in an open vehicle. Long sleeves and full-length trousers help against mosquitoes after dusk. Vegetarian and vegan meals need about a day's notice at safari lodges. Halal-friendly meals at premium Mara camps should be requested 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
Send us your dates and a few preferences and we will turn this outline into a quote built around you.

FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
