A closer look at this 6-night journey through Himachal— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What is a Himachal family package?
A Himachal family package is a fixed domestic itinerary with hotels, a private car and sightseeing planned around children and elders. This one covers Kufri, Shimla and Dharamshala over 6 nights, with a private car for every transfer and sightseeing day.
Kufri is the easier hill stop for young children. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj give you Tibetan food, monasteries and a warmer, lower base for the second half.
Himachal family tour: what this trip covers
This trip covers Kufri, Shimla and Dharamshala with one long driving day (Day 3) and short local drives on the rest. Mornings are for sightseeing, afternoons keep room for a nap, and dinners are early. The Himachal tour packages hub lists other routes if you want to compare before deciding.
Day-by-day plan at a glance
The seven days follow one rhythm: arrive and rest in Shimla, spend a day at Kufri and the Ridge, take the long drive to Dharamshala, then two gentle sightseeing days and one free afternoon before departure. The full day-by-day schedule with morning, afternoon and evening plans is listed in the itinerary section of this page.
What is included and what is not?
Hotels, daily breakfast and dinner, a private car and listed sightseeing are included. Flights, lunches, entry tickets not listed and personal expenses are not. The full lists appear in the inclusions and exclusions sections of this page, and anything unconfirmed is marked to be confirmed at booking.
Seats, rooms and rest stops for kids and elders
Families travel in one private car with front-seat access kept for elders who get car-sick, and children seated with a parent. Hotels usually offer family or connecting rooms, subject to availability. Stroller use is easy at the Mall Road and McLeod Ganj market, while the Ridge and Kufri stops are reachable from the car park.
On the Day 3 drive, plan a break every two hours for washrooms, water and snacks. Keep a small bag with wipes, fruit and a change of clothes within reach.
Why does this route work for families?
This route works because both bases are established hill towns with proper roads, pharmacies and hospitals, and no day needs more than a short walk. Children get pony rides, open ground and a craft workshop visit. Grandparents get benches, tea stalls and viewpoints reachable from the car park.
- Only one long transfer in the whole week
- One free afternoon on Day 5 and a rest window after lunch on most days
- Early dinners at the hotel so young children sleep on time
- No trekking, no high passes, no camping
Highlights for each age group
Younger children
- Pony ride and open ground at Kufri
- Craft workshops near Kangra, where they can watch things being made
- Momos at a McLeod Ganj cafe
Teenagers
- Cricket stadium viewpoint in Dharamshala
- Tibetan market browsing and street photography in McLeod Ganj
- Adventure-park time at Kufri, to be confirmed at booking
Grandparents
- Christ Church and Ridge benches in Shimla
- Monastery visit at McLeod Ganj with easy walking
- Tea garden stop and unhurried afternoons at the hotel
Pace, rest and daily rhythm
The pace is slow: one main outing per half-day and a rest window after lunch on most days. Drives other than Day 3 are short local transfers that children can manage. Day 3 runs roughly 8 to 9 hours with breaks, so start early and keep the car stocked with snacks. Day 5 is deliberately free for rest or a repeat visit to the market.
Family rooms, meals and comfort
Standard 3-4 star hotels usually offer double rooms with an extra bed or connecting rooms for families, subject to availability. Breakfast and dinner are at the hotel, and early dinners suit young children. Vegetarian food is easy to find across the route, and McLeod Ganj serves Tibetan vegetarian dishes. Share any Jain or allergy needs at booking so hotels can plan.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips
- Pack layers rather than one heavy jacket, because afternoons warm up and evenings cool fast.
- Carry regular prescriptions and a small first-aid kit, since the Day 3 drive has few pharmacies.
- Keep original ID or age proof for children, as hotels may ask for it at check-in.
- Start long drives early. Mountain roads are winding, so travel time is longer than the distance suggests.
- Carry some cash for small stalls, as card machines and mobile data can drop on hill roads.
Where you stay in Shimla and Dharamshala
The first three nights are in Shimla and the remaining nights are in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj, all in standard 3-4 star hotels on twin sharing. The listed price of Rs.22,500 per person as of 2026 is for this standard category. As indicative guidance only, a budget 3-star version would come to roughly Rs.17,000 per person and a premium 5-star version to roughly Rs.36,000 per person.
- Budget 3-star: clean, simple rooms and basic hotel meals, usually a little further from the main sights.
- Standard 3-4 star: the default for this trip, with family-friendly rooms, hotel restaurant and parking.
- Premium 5-star: larger rooms, more facilities and better locations, at a higher cost.
Peak weeks in May and June cost more than March or October, and the child rate depends on age and bed type, so confirm at booking.
Getting to Shimla and Dharamshala: access and road notes
For Himachal, you reach Shimla by road from Chandigarh or by rail through Kalka, and leave from Dharamshala via Pathankot railhead or Gaggal airport, about 15 km away. Mountain roads are winding and the Day 3 drive is long. In July and August heavy rain can make roads landslide-prone, and snow can affect higher roads in winter. Mobile connectivity can drop on hill stretches. Confirm pickup points and road conditions at booking.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
