Journey notes
Why this route works
What a Darjeeling honeymoon tour package covers
This trip is organised around two early-morning moments, the Tiger Hill sunrise and the toy train ride, with unhurried days in between. It covers 5 nights in Darjeeling, private cab transfers, a tea estate visit and one dinner for two. Flights are not included.
Day 2 opens with first light on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway ride between Darjeeling and Ghum gets its own morning on Day 3, so neither activity is squeezed into a rushed sightseeing day. Drives stay short and two evenings are kept free. For the wider range of options, see our Darjeeling tour packages.
Is Darjeeling good for a honeymoon?
Yes, Darjeeling suits couples who like cool weather, mountain views and a slow pace, and who are comfortable with a road transfer from the plains. Tiger Hill and the heritage railway give the trip two clear romantic anchors.
The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 70 km and 3 to 3.5 hours by road from Darjeeling town. By rail, you arrive at New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then take a taxi or shared jeep for about 3 hours. Darjeeling has no airport and no broad-gauge station of its own, so plan the arrival day around the hill drive.
Moments to plan around
The best moments on this route are the Kanchenjunga sunrise, the toy train ride, a tea tasting and a quiet evening dinner. Each sits on a specific day, so you can plan photographs, rest and weather buffers around it.
- First light on Kanchenjunga: Day 2, from Tiger Hill. Carry a shawl; winter mornings are close to freezing.
- The toy train out to Ghum: Day 3 morning. The return joyride takes about 2 hours and gives a slow look at the hill landscape.
- A tea tasting between the bushes: Day 4 morning, at a working estate with Darjeeling tea tasting, including the four flushes at Happy Valley.
- Dinner for two: Day 3 evening, after a free afternoon. Details are confirmed at booking.
Why this route suits couples
This route suits couples because the pace is slow, the transfers are private and the main sights are places you experience together rather than tick through. There is no group departure time to meet.
- Privacy: a private cab handles every transfer and sightseeing drive, so you set the stops.
- Setting: Tiger Hill at dawn and the Ghum railway stretch are quiet in the early hours, before day visitors arrive.
- Pace: Day 3 afternoon and Day 5 are intentionally open, so you can rest, shop on the Mall or stay in.
Romantic highlights on this trip
Six experiences carry the romance on this route, from a sunrise viewpoint to a heritage train ride. Each is a named stop with a specific detail, not a generic add-on.
- Tiger Hill sunrise: a viewpoint with views towards Mount Kanchenjunga, reached by a pre-dawn drive.
- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway joyride: a return ride between Darjeeling and Ghum, around 2 hours.
- Batasia Loop: a railway loop at Ghum with a war memorial to Gorkha soldiers and open hill views.
- Tea estate walk: a stroll through the plantation followed by a tasting of Darjeeling tea.
- Rangeet Valley ropeway: a cable-car ride over the hill landscape, a good option for the free Day 3 afternoon.
- Chowrasta and The Mall: an evening walk through the town's central square, shops and cafes.
How the days flow
The trip alternates two early starts with slower days. Day 2 begins around 4 am for Tiger Hill; Day 3 starts with the toy train and then goes quiet; Day 5 starts late by design.
Expect one relaxed arrival day, two light sightseeing days, one early sunrise day and a short departure morning. Sunset slots are kept free on most days so you can walk or have dinner without a fixed time. Because the hill drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours each way, arrival and departure days carry no sightseeing.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples, the stay that matters most is one with a mountain-facing room, quiet surroundings and easy access to the Mall or the cab pick-up point. Standard 3-4 star hotels are used on this plan, and no specific property is named here.
- View rooms: ask for a Kanchenjunga-facing or valley-facing room; on clear mornings it removes the need to step out.
- Privacy: smaller properties and quieter lanes away from Chowrasta suit couples who want less foot traffic.
- Access: central Darjeeling is easier for evening walks; quieter areas like Ghoom or Lepchajagat suit a slower stay but need a cab for dinner.
Best months for a couple's trip to Darjeeling
October and November are the clearest, with 9-19 C and low-to-moderate rain. March and April are pleasant but busier and pricier. December to February is cold and quiet, with lows around 2 to 4 C in January and February. June to September is heavy monsoon and best avoided for a sunrise-led trip.
| Month | Temperature | Rain | Crowds and prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 9-19 C | Moderate | Crowds high, prices medium |
| November | 9-19 C | Low | Crowds low, prices low |
| March | 8-16 C | Low | Crowds medium, prices medium |
| April | 11-19 C | Moderate | Crowds high, prices high |
| January | 2-9 C | Low | Crowds low, prices low |
| June to September | 14-24 C | Heavy | Landslide and mist risk on hill roads |
Add-ons worth considering
Four add-ons suit a honeymoon here: a spa session, a private dinner, a photographer and a first-class toy train seat. Each fits a particular day, and all are quoted separately.
- Spa session: best on Day 3 afternoon or Day 5, when nothing is scheduled. A named boutique hotel and spa exists in the area; availability is confirmed at booking.
- Private dinner: works well on Day 3 or Day 5 evening.
- Photographer: suits the Tiger Hill sunrise morning or the toy train ride.
- First-class toy train fare: Rs.1,800 first class or Rs.1,100 second class for the Darjeeling-Ghum joyride, as of May 2026; this fare is payable at booking and is not part of the package price.
Where you stay in Darjeeling: three hotel tiers
This package is priced on a Standard 3-4 star category, with budget and premium tiers available as indicative alternatives. All figures are per person on twin sharing, land only, and confirmed at booking.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What it means for a couple |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.13,000 | Clean, simple rooms; views vary by room and floor |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.17,000 | Comfortable rooms in central Darjeeling with breakfast and easier access to the Mall |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.27,000 | Larger rooms, better views and on-site dining or spa where offered |
Central areas such as Chowrasta and The Mall suit couples who want shops and cafes within walking distance. Lepchajagat and Ghoom suit those who prefer quiet and heritage settings but need a cab for evening plans.
Getting to Darjeeling and moving around
Fly to Bagdogra (IXB) or take a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then travel by road. According to the West Bengal tourism and Incredible India listings, Bagdogra is the nearest airport and the road to Darjeeling is about 70 km, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours.
From Delhi, Bagdogra is about 2.5 hours by direct flight; from Mumbai it is about 4 hours, direct or connected, as of February 2026. From Kolkata, the train to NJP takes about 12 hours. Prepaid taxis run from both Bagdogra and NJP. No permit is needed for Indian citizens visiting Darjeeling, but carry a photo ID for hotel check-in. Roads can be affected by landslides from June to September, so allow buffer time then. Mobile connectivity is generally available in town but can be patchy on viewpoint drives; confirm at booking if you need guaranteed signal.

FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
