The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 5-night journey through Coorg— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Coorg family holiday cover?
The trip covers six days in two base areas, so you unpack only twice and spend less time in the car. Madikeri handles Raja's Seat, Abbey Falls and Madikeri Fort, while Kushalnagar is the base for Dubare, Nisargadhama and the Tibetan monastery at Bylekuppe.
Mornings start after a proper breakfast, not at 5 am. Day 3 is kept as a light day with a free afternoon for rest or the hotel pool. Dinners are early, usually by 8 pm, which works for young children and older parents alike.

Why this route suits families with kids and grandparents
Coorg has no railway station or airport, so every family arrives by road, which makes transfer length the biggest comfort factor. This route keeps the one long drive on arrival and departure days and splits everything else into short hops.
- Dubare Elephant Camp sits beside the Kaveri River and takes 2 to 3 hours, with supervised elephant viewing that holds a child's attention.
- Raja's Seat is a one-hour sunset stop in Madikeri, easy to manage for grandparents.
- Nisargadhama is described as suitable for family outings and works as a relaxed half day.
- Namdroling Monastery at Bylekuppe is a quiet 1 to 2 hour visit with room for children to walk around.
Kids, teens and grandparents: who enjoys what
Each age group gets at least one stop built around it, so nobody is dragged through a day that is not theirs.
Younger children
- Elephant viewing at Dubare, with short sessions and open space to move.
- Nisargadhama for an easy walk in the open.
- Abbey Falls, a 1 to 2 hour visit that families commonly do together.
Teenagers
- Coffee plantation walk of 2 to 3 hours to see how the estate works.
- Photography at Namdroling Monastery and Raja's Seat at sunset.
- Madikeri Fort for a short, history-led stop.
Grandparents
- Raja's Seat, about one hour, mostly flat and seated.
- Namdroling Monastery, a quiet cultural visit with no adventure element.
- Late starts and a free afternoon for rest.
Pace, rest and drive times
The pace is two short outings a day at most, with a rest window after lunch. Drives between Madikeri, Dubare and Kushalnagar are short hops, and only the arrival and departure transfers run long.
- Day 1 and Day 6 carry the long road legs; both include a lunch and stretch stop.
- Day 3 has a free afternoon for a nap, pool time or a market walk.
- Sunset at Raja's Seat is timed so children are back at the hotel for an early dinner.
- The Talakaveri and Bhagamandala drive on Day 5 is optional if the group is tired.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Standard 3-4 star hotels in Madikeri and Kushalnagar usually offer family rooms or two adjoining rooms, and extra beds for children are normally possible. Room type and connecting rooms are subject to availability, so confirm at booking.
Vegetarian food is easy to find, and Kodava vegetarian dishes such as akki rotti, kadambuttu, noolputtu and paputtu are served at local cafes and some estates. Jain and child-friendly meals should be requested in advance, as they are not guaranteed everywhere.
When is the best time to visit Coorg with family?
October to February gives low to moderate rain and temperatures of roughly 15 to 26 C, which suits both children and elders. December to February is the coolest and driest stretch of the year.
March to May is warmer, at 19 to 30 C, with pre-monsoon showers building. June to September brings heavy rain, slippery roads and landslide risk, and outdoor activities get limited. Read the best time to visit Coorg guide before you lock dates.
What does a Coorg trip cost for a family?
This package is priced at Rs.22,000 per person in 2026 on twin sharing, land only, with flights excluded. Child pricing depends on age and whether the child shares a bed, so confirm the exact slab at booking.
Hotel category, season and vehicle type move the total. A Coorg trip cost breakdown shows where the money goes before you compare options. Peak summer and the year-end holidays push rates up.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips for Coorg
- Hire a private cab for the whole trip; local public transport is described as limited, and shared autorickshaws are not suited to luggage and young children.
- Carry motion-sickness tablets for the ghat sections, and keep a plastic bag in the car for children under ten.
- Pack a light jacket year-round and a raincoat from May to November; Madikeri evenings cool quickly.
- Carry a printed ID for every traveller, including children, as hotels ask for it at check-in.
- Reach Dubare early in the day to avoid midday heat and crowds, and carry a hat and water for elders.
You can compare this itinerary with other options on the Coorg tour packages page.

Reaching Coorg by road, rail and air
Coorg has no railway station or airport, so the last leg is always by road. Mysuru is the nearest railhead, about 95 to 120 km away and roughly 3 hours by taxi.
By air, Bengaluru airport is about 260 km away, a 5 to 6 hour drive. Mangaluru is about 150 to 165 km and Kannur is also used. Monsoon rain from June to September can cause slippery roads and landslides, so keep buffer time. Mobile signal can drop in estates and ghat stretches. No permit is needed for the places on this route; confirm any entry rules at booking.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
