Rajasthan 7-Day Itinerary: Day-by-Day Travel Plan
This rajasthan 7 day itinerary covers four cities in a logical west-to-south arc: Jaipur (2 nights), Jodhpur (1 night), Jaisalmer (2 nights), and Udaipur (2 nights). That is 7 nights and 8 days total. If you have only 7 days, drop one Udaipur night. This article covers the 7-night, 8-day version as the standard recommendation.
Is 7 days enough to cover Rajasthan?
Seven days covers the four main cities — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur — at a comfortable pace for a first-time visitor. Pushkar, Bikaner, and Ranthambore are not included and each needs a separate trip.
Seven days suits first-time visitors to Rajasthan well. You get two nights in Jaipur, which is enough for Amber Fort and the old city. Jodhpur works as a one-night stop because the key sites cluster near Mehrangarh Fort. Jaisalmer needs two nights to fit the desert camp experience at Sam Sand Dunes. Udaipur rounds off the trip with lakes and palaces over two nights.
What 7 days does not cover: the Pushkar camel fair town (90 km from Ajmer), Bikaner's Junagarh Fort, and Ranthambore National Park for tiger safaris. Each of those adds 1–2 days minimum. A 10–12 day trip handles the full state more comfortably.

What is the best route and transport plan for a 7-day Rajasthan trip?
The recommended route runs Jaipur to Jodhpur to Jaisalmer to Udaipur. This direction follows a logical west-then-south arc and avoids backtracking. Reversing the route adds unnecessary distance between Jaisalmer and Udaipur at the start.
The Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Udaipur sequence works because each leg has a direct road or rail connection. Flying into Jaipur and out of Udaipur keeps the route linear. Both airports handle daily flights from Delhi and Mumbai.
| Route Leg | Road Distance (approx.) | Train Option and Duration | Flight Option and Duration | Recommended Mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaipur to Jodhpur | 340 km | Mandore Express — 5 to 6 hours overnight | No direct scheduled flight | Overnight train or private car (5 hours) |
| Jodhpur to Jaisalmer | 290 km | Jodhpur–Jaisalmer Express — 5 to 6 hours | No scheduled commercial flight | Private car (4 to 5 hours) or train |
| Jaisalmer to Jodhpur (return leg) | 290 km | Same rail line, return service available | No scheduled commercial flight | Private car if connecting to Udaipur same day |
| Jodhpur to Udaipur | 250 km | Ranakpur Express — approx. 6 hours | No direct scheduled flight | Private car (4 hours) or train |
How do you get from Jaipur to Jodhpur?
The Mandore Express departs Jaipur in the evening and reaches Jodhpur in approximately 5 to 6 hours. An overnight train saves one hotel night and keeps the daytime free in Jaipur. A private car covers the 340 km in around 5 hours on NH48 and NH62. Bus services from Sindhi Camp bus stand in Jaipur also run this route but take 6 to 7 hours.
How do you get from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer?
The Jodhpur–Jaisalmer Express covers 290 km in about 5 to 6 hours. A private car takes 4 to 5 hours on NH125. There is no commercial flight between these two cities. Most travellers on a fixed itinerary prefer a private car because it allows a stop at Osian temple ruins midway.
How do you get from Jaisalmer to Udaipur?
There is no direct train or flight from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. The standard route goes Jaisalmer to Jodhpur by road (290 km, 4 to 5 hours), then Jodhpur to Udaipur by road (250 km, 4 hours). This full leg takes one full travel day. Some travellers fly Jodhpur to Udaipur if time is short, though no daily direct service is guaranteed — check current schedules before booking.

What does a day-by-day Rajasthan 7-day itinerary look like?
A standard 7-day Rajasthan itinerary starts in Jaipur on Day 1 and ends in Udaipur on Day 7. Each city gets dedicated days: Jaipur (Days 1–2), Jodhpur (Day 3), Jaisalmer (Days 4–5), and Udaipur (Days 6–7).
-
Day 1 — Arrive Jaipur, check in, evening at Hawa Mahal street or Chokhi Dhani
Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and the entry point for most international and domestic travellers on this route. Arrive, check in, and spend the evening at the Hawa Mahal bazaar area or drive 20 km to Chokhi Dhani for a Rajasthani folk dinner.
-
Day 2 — Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar, City Palace Jaipur
Amber Fort is a 16th-century hilltop fort located 11 km from Jaipur city centre and requires 2 to 3 hours minimum. After Amber, visit Jantar Mantar — a UNESCO-listed astronomical observatory — and City Palace in the afternoon.
-
Day 3 — Morning Jaipur market, afternoon travel to Jodhpur, Mehrangarh Fort at sunset
Use the morning for Johari Bazaar or the textile market near Bapu Bazaar before departing for Jodhpur by afternoon train or car. Mehrangarh Fort is a 15th-century structure on a 122-metre ridge and stays open until 5:30 PM — arrive by 4 PM for the sunset view over the blue city.
-
Day 4 — Jodhpur old city, Umaid Bhawan, drive to Jaisalmer
Umaid Bhawan Palace is a 20th-century sandstone palace that still houses the Jodhpur royal family and includes a museum wing open to visitors. After a morning in the old city clock tower market, depart for Jaisalmer — the 290 km drive takes 4 to 5 hours.
-
Day 5 — Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, evening Sam Sand Dunes camp
Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort where roughly 3,000 residents still live inside its walls. Visit Patwon Ki Haveli — a cluster of five interconnected merchant mansions — in the afternoon, then drive 42 km to Sam Sand Dunes for a desert camp overnight.

Day 6 — Morning at the dunes, drive back through Jodhpur, reach Udaipur by evening
The Sam Sand Dunes camp includes a sunrise camel ride before checkout. The drive from Jaisalmer to Udaipur via Jodhpur covers roughly 540 km and takes 9 to 10 hours — start by 8 AM to reach Udaipur by early evening.
-
Day 7 — Udaipur: City Palace, Lake Pichola boat ride, Saheliyon ki Bari
City Palace Udaipur is a royal complex built in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II and is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Spend the morning at City Palace, take a 45-minute boat ride on Lake Pichola in the afternoon, and close the day at Saheliyon ki Bari garden before departure.

What is the approximate cost of a 7-day Rajasthan trip from India?
A 7-day Rajasthan trip costs between ₹15,000 and ₹1,20,000 per person depending on accommodation tier, transport mode, and activity choices. Budget travellers using trains and guesthouses spend the least. The desert camp night at Sam Sand Dunes is the single highest per-night cost in this itinerary.
According to the Ministry of Tourism India's India Tourism Statistics 2023 report, Rajasthan received over 5.1 crore domestic tourist visits in 2022, making it one of the top three most visited states in India for domestic tourism.

When is the best time to follow this Rajasthan itinerary?
October to March is the best period for this Rajasthan itinerary. The Thar Desert segment at Sam Sand Dunes is only viable between October and March. April to June temperatures in Jaisalmer regularly exceed 45°C, making the desert camp segment uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe.
November and February are the two peak months because they align with major festivals. The Pushkar Camel Fair runs in November (Kartik Purnima). The Desert Festival in Jaisalmer takes place in February and includes folk performances and camel races near Sam Sand Dunes.
Monsoon months — July through September — bring limited rainfall to Rajasthan compared to coastal India, but desert roads near Jaisalmer can become difficult. Udaipur and Jaipur are more accessible during monsoon, but the Jaisalmer desert camp segment is not recommended in this period.
December and January are cold at night in all four cities. Temperatures in Jaisalmer drop to 5–8°C after dark in January. Pack accordingly if travelling in winter.
