A considered guide to USA
The United States spans most of North America, with Alaska and Hawaii as geographically separate regions. Most trips pick one or two areas and move between them by domestic flight, long-distance train or road rather than trying to cover the whole country. The best season runs from March to May and September to November, when crowds are moderate and mountain roads are mostly open. A comfortable first trip runs 10 to 14 nights across two or three bases. The main international gateways are John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD).
| Region | Key Cities / Areas | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast | New York City, Washington D.C., Boston | City sightseeing, history, couples, families |
| South | Miami, New Orleans, Nashville | Culture, beaches, music |
| West Coast | Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego | Coastal drives, cities, couples, families |
| Southwest | Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon | National parks, road trips, adventure |
| Mountain West | Denver, Yellowstone, Wyoming | Wildlife, outdoor landscapes |
| Midwest | Chicago, Great Lakes | Architecture, city culture |
Three things draw Indian travellers to this destination: scale, variety and practical ease. No other single country lets you combine a Broadway evening in New York with a canyon hike in Arizona and a coastal drive in California on one trip, without a language barrier or a complicated transit system to navigate.
English is the principal language for all travel information, which makes independent movement straightforward for first-timers from India. Signage, transport apps and park guides are all in English, so there is no guesswork at ticket machines or trailheads.
Vegetarian food is easy to find in major US cities, with several national chains offering dedicated vegetarian menus. Intercity buses and Amtrak long-distance trains connect many of the places visitors want to see, giving budget-conscious travellers a real alternative to domestic flights between regions.
The areas below each work as a base or a meaningful stop, and most reward at least three nights. Pick the ones that match your interests and build the route around them rather than trying to cover all ten.
March to May and September to November are the best months for a USA holiday, offering moderate crowds and mostly open roads across both city and park destinations.
Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers, waterfalls and migratory birds. Some mountain roads remain closed early in the season, but cities are pleasant and less crowded than summer. This is a good window for first-timers who want both urban and park stops.
Summer (June to August) is peak season. Most mountain roads and park facilities are fully open, but popular parks and beaches are busy and prices peak. Afternoon thunderstorms are common at elevation, and summer heat in Zion can exceed 38°C.
Autumn (September to November) is the other strong window. Eastern foliage and Rocky Mountain elk activity are highlights, and crowds ease noticeably after Labor Day. This suits travellers who want national parks without the summer rush.
Winter (December to February) has low crowds and lower city hotel rates, but snow affects mountain access and many national park roads and services close or run on limited schedules. Plan a winter trip around cities rather than parks unless you are specifically seeking snow experiences.
Indian travellers fly into one of five main international airports: JFK or Newark (EWR) for the East Coast, LAX for Los Angeles, SFO for San Francisco, or ORD for Chicago. From Delhi and Mumbai, flights to New York take about 15 hours. From Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Kochi, journeys connect through a US gateway airport and run longer, roughly 23 hours in total.
Onward transfer from your arrival airport to your first base is typically a domestic flight for cross-country routes, or a train and subway for city-to-city moves on the East Coast. The New York subway, for example, connects JFK to Midtown Manhattan directly.
Check current entry rules, including any travel authorisation requirements, on the official government source before booking. Requirements can change, so verify again close to your departure date. No visa fees or processing times are quoted here, as these are covered in a separate guide.
Pick two or three bases rather than moving every night. The right base depends on your interests and budget tier.
New York City suits couples and families who want museums, Broadway and waterfront landmarks. Midtown and Lower Manhattan keep most sights within subway reach. Budget travellers find well-connected options in outer boroughs; mid-range and luxury travellers have a wide choice of central properties.
Washington, D.C. works for families and couples who prefer a walkable, compact sightseeing core. Staying near the National Mall puts the main attractions on foot.
Los Angeles and San Francisco suit couples and families on the West Coast. In Los Angeles, staying in a central neighbourhood avoids long daily drives. San Francisco's compact layout makes it easier to manage without a car for the city portion.
Las Vegas is best for couples and as a road-trip base. Properties along the main strip put entertainment and park-tour departures close together.
Miami offers budget and mid-range hotel categories for a Florida stop, with beach access and city sightseeing in the same location.
Across budget tiers: budget travellers do well with transit-connected suburban stays; mid-range travellers get central three- and four-star rooms in most cities; luxury travellers can choose full-service city hotels or resort-style properties near parks and coastlines.
A sensible first route uses three bases and moves in one direction, east to west, avoiding backtracking and minimising domestic flight time.
Start with four nights in New York City. That gives enough time for the museums, Central Park, a Broadway evening and a day trip to Washington, D.C. if the itinerary allows. Fly west to Las Vegas for three nights, using the city as the base for Grand Canyon and Zion day trips or an overnight in canyon country. Finish with four nights in San Francisco, adding a coastal drive south if time allows. The east-to-west order works because each region is distinct, the domestic legs are direct, and three nights minimum per base means you are not spending the holiday in transit.
Travellers with more time can add Chicago between New York and Las Vegas, or extend the California leg with a few nights in Los Angeles before finishing in San Francisco.
This destination suits travellers who want variety and are comfortable with internal flights between regions. It works well for families with school-age children, who get Junior Ranger activities and park hiking alongside city days. Couples can mix city evenings with canyon helicopter tours or a long-distance rail journey on the California Zephyr, which links Chicago with the San Francisco Bay Area through the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada. Senior travellers do well with scenic national park drives, shorter walking days and the compact sightseeing cores of cities like Washington, D.C.
USA is less suited to anyone trying to cover several distant regions in under ten nights, because combining regions requires domestic flights and at least three nights per location. Solo travellers on a tighter budget can manage well with intercity buses and national park hiking, but should plan the route carefully to avoid expensive last-minute domestic fares. If your priority is a single relaxed beach stay without much moving around, a shorter-haul destination will usually involve less logistics and lower overall cost.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
