Ooty family tour package: what is covered
This Ooty family tour package covers 5 nights in a standard 3-4 star hotel, daily breakfast and dinner, and private cab sightseeing, priced from Rs.22,000 per person on twin sharing (land only). The plan is built around two headline places so that children and grandparents are never stuck in the car for long hours.
Doddabetta Peak is the highest viewpoint around Ooty, and the Government Botanical Garden has easy paths, a Fern House, an Italian Garden and a Conservatory. Ooty Lake, the Government Rose Garden on Elk Hill, and a half-day run to Coonoor for Sim's Park and Lamb's Rock fill the remaining days. One afternoon in the middle of the trip is left free for rest or local wandering. For a wider look at options in the region, see our Ooty tour packages.
How the days are paced for children and elders
Each day has one main outing in the morning, a lunch and rest window, and an early return to the hotel. Most drives are 15 to 45 minutes. Only the arrival and departure days involve the ghat road from Coimbatore, which takes about 3.5 hours.
A typical day looks like this:
- Breakfast at the hotel by 8:30 AM, then one sightseeing stop of 2 to 3 hours.
- Lunch near the sight, then back at the hotel by 1:30 to 2 PM for a nap or quiet time.
- An optional short outing after 4 PM, such as a lakeside walk or a snack stop.
- Dinner at the hotel by 7:30 PM so younger children sleep on time.

Kid and elder logistics
Seating, room choice and rest stops are planned before you arrive. A private air-conditioned cab keeps the family together, and the driver handles the Nilgiris e-pass paperwork once you share vehicle details.
- Seating: an SUV or MUV is assigned based on group size. Grandparents get the front or easy-entry seat, and child seats are not supplied, so bring your own if needed.
- Rooms: ground-floor or lift-access rooms can be requested for elders. Confirm at booking.
- Strollers and wheelchairs: the Botanical Garden has easy paths, so strollers manage well. Doddabetta has a viewing area near the parking. Tell us in advance if a wheelchair is needed so we plan the sights accordingly.
- Rest stops: on the Coimbatore to Ooty ghat road, the driver pauses at safe roadside spots for snacks, washroom breaks and motion-sickness relief. Keep water, glucose biscuits and a plastic bag handy.
Why this trip works for families
Ooty keeps distances short, which is the biggest advantage for a group spanning toddlers to grandparents. Most sights are within 10 to 17 km of the town base, and the plan avoids switching hotels.
- One hotel for all 5 nights, so no repeated packing and unpacking.
- Activities children enjoy, such as boating and gardens, sit next to calmer options for elders.
- Vegetarian food is widely available, and many town-centre restaurants are pure vegetarian.
- The free afternoon gives the group time to split up or rest without missing anything.
Highlights by age group
Different ages get different things out of the same itinerary. Here is how the main stops line up.
Younger children
- Pedal boats and rowboats at Ooty Lake.
- Open lawns and the Fern House at the Botanical Garden.
- Masala corn and mulaga bajji snack stops near the lake and gardens.
Teenagers
- The viewing area and short trails at Doddabetta Peak.
- Cycling along the Ooty Lake promenade on the free afternoon.
- The tea factory visit to see how leaves are processed.
Grandparents
- Slow walks on the easy paths of the Botanical Garden.
- Quiet seating at the lakeside and in Sim's Park, Coonoor.
- Rose Garden on Elk Hill, with benches along the slopes.
Daily rhythm, rest and driving times
Driving times stay between 15 and 45 minutes on regular days, which most children handle without trouble. The longest road stretch is the 3.5-hour ghat drive from Coimbatore airport on arrival and departure days.
Plan on a 1.5 to 2 hour rest window after lunch every day, since the cool air makes children and elders tire faster than expected. Doddabetta is best visited in the morning, before mist builds up. Walking paths in the gardens are gentle, but keep sights to one major stop per half-day. If anyone gets altitude headaches, rest on Day 1 and keep fluids up.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Standard 3-4 star hotels in Ooty usually offer family rooms with an extra bed, or two adjoining rooms on request. Connecting rooms depend on the hotel, so confirm at booking. Heating or blankets are normally provided, but ask for extra blankets if grandparents feel the cold.
Breakfast and dinner are included. Vegetarian South Indian meals are easy to find, and hotels will usually prepare simple dishes such as rice, dal or idli for young children on request. Jain food availability varies, so tell us before travel.
Travelling with kids and elders: five practical tips
- Pack for rain and chill: carry a light rain jacket, a warm layer and closed shoes, since mist and drizzle can arrive without warning even in winter.
- Keep ID handy: carry an Aadhaar card or school ID for each child, and a valid photo ID for every adult, for hotel check-in.
- Medicines: carry prescription medicines for the full trip plus motion-sickness tablets for the ghat road.
- Vehicle e-pass: a free e-pass is required year-round for non-local tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris, according to a travel guide citing a court direction (October 2026). Your driver usually handles this, but confirm at booking.
- Book early: toy-train seats are limited, so book through IRCTC well ahead if you want that ride.
Where you stay in Ooty
This package uses a standard 3-4 star hotel in or near Ooty town, close to Ooty Lake and the Botanical Garden. That area keeps most attractions within a short drive and places restaurants and pharmacies within walking distance.
Indicative per-person tiers for context are below. Actual prices depend on dates and availability.
| Stay category | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.16,500 | Basic clean rooms, simple restaurant, limited extras |
| Standard 3-4 star (this package) | Rs.22,000 | Comfortable family rooms, in-house restaurant, central location |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.35,000 | Larger rooms, more facilities, often on quieter hillsides |
Getting to Ooty: access and logistics
Ooty is reached by road, rail or air within India. The nearest airport is Coimbatore, about 3.5 hours away by road through a ghat route, and the nearest railway station is Mettupalayam, about 40 km from Ooty. A taxi from Mettupalayam reaches Ooty in roughly one hour.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty in about five hours, starting at Rs.175 per person (as of October 2026). From Bengaluru the road journey is about 6 hours. Ghat roads can be slow in heavy rain, especially in July and August. Mobile signal is generally fine in town but can drop on forest stretches, so share the driver's number with the family.
Tell us who is joining the trip, from toddlers to grandparents, and we will tune the plan for everyone.

FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
