Journey notes
Why this route works
What is a Mysore family package?
A Mysore family package is a fixed-route holiday for mixed-age groups, with hotel stays, a private vehicle and sightseeing sequenced around children's energy and elders' stamina. This one is built on Mysuru's heritage sights, the hill temple and the zoo, with two short day excursions.
Distances are short. Most days have one main outing and one lighter stop, with the afternoon left open for a nap, pool time or a slow lunch. Three or four hours of actual sightseeing a day is the target, not eight.
Kid and elder logistics
Seating, room and rest arrangements are planned around the youngest and eldest travellers. Confirm all of these at booking, since they depend on the hotel and vehicle allotted for your dates.
- Seats: the private vehicle keeps the family together. Ask for a larger vehicle if you are travelling with more than four or five people and luggage.
- Rooms: request connecting or adjacent rooms, and ask for ground-floor or lift-access rooms for grandparents.
- Strollers and wheelchairs: carry a compact stroller or fold-up wheelchair. Palace, zoo and lake paths are mostly walkable, but access at the hill temple can involve steps and queues. Confirm assistance at booking.
- Rest and snack stops: drives to Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens are short, but the driver can stop for water, tender coconut or restroom breaks on request. Pack biscuits, fruit and a water bottle for children.
Why this works for families
This route works for families because Mysuru's main sights sit close together. Bengaluru to Mysuru is about 140 km by road and takes roughly three hours, and Mysuru Airport at Mandakalli is about 10 km from the city. Most days you spend more time at the sights than in the vehicle.
Meals are simple, with vegetarian dosa, idli and Mysore pak easy to find. Dinner is kept early so children sleep on time, and elders do not have to push through late evenings. One afternoon every couple of days is left free, so nobody runs on empty.
Highlights by age group
Each age group has its own favourite stop, and everyone stays on the same route so nobody has to split off.
Younger children
- Elephants, giraffes, tigers, lions and white rhinoceroses at the zoo
- Pedal boating, the butterfly park and the walk-through aviary at Karanji Kere Lake
- Vintage locomotives at the rail museum
Teenagers
- GRS Fantasy Park water rides, as an optional add-on
- Srirangapatna Fort and the Tipu Sultan history around it
- The terraces and water features at Brindavan Gardens in the evening
Grandparents
- Darshan at Sri Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hills
- Mysuru Palace interiors and St. Philomena's Cathedral, both easy to see at a slow pace
- Seated time by a lake or on the palace grounds
Pace, rest and daily rhythm
The daily rhythm is one main outing in the morning, a lunch break, a rest window, and a light evening. Expect roughly three to four hours of sightseeing a day, with drives under an hour for most sights.
Mornings start around 8:30 to 9 am so children are fed and elders are not rushed. Early afternoons are for rest at the hotel. Day 4 is deliberately light, with a free afternoon. The longest drive is the half-day to Srirangapatna and Mandya on Day 5, still short enough for children to handle with a snack stop.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Stays are in standard 3-4 star hotels. Ask for family rooms, connecting rooms or a twin room with an extra bed for a child; availability varies by property and date, so confirm at booking.
Breakfast is included daily. Vegetarian food is widely available, and children's staples such as idli, plain dosa and rice dishes are easy to order. Jain meals are not confirmed by any source we hold, so tell us in advance and we will check with the hotel.
Travelling with kids and elders: practical tips
- Check closing days: the zoo and Karanji Kere Lake are closed on Tuesdays, and the rail museum is closed on Mondays. The itinerary is sequenced around this.
- Weather gear: carry caps, cotton clothes and water. From June to September, add a foldable umbrella; summer afternoons in April and May are hot.
- ID and tickets: keep ID proofs for every traveller handy, including children, for ticketed entries. Entry fees are paid on the spot.
- Medicines: carry regular prescriptions, a basic first-aid kit and a small stock of child-friendly remedies. Chemists are easy to find in the city centre.
- Temple timings: Sri Chamundeshwari Temple is open 7:30 AM-2:00 PM, 3:30-6:00 PM and 7:30-9:00 PM. Go early to avoid queues with small children.
Where families stay in Mysore
Families usually stay in the palace and city centre, or in a quieter residential area such as Gokulam or Yadavagiri, so that the sights are a short drive away. Indicative per-person prices by hotel category, for context only:
| Category | Indicative price per person | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.16,500 | Clean, basic rooms near the city centre or railway station |
| Standard 4-star (this package) | Rs.22,000 | Comfortable rooms, in-house restaurant, family-room options |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.35,000 | Larger rooms, pool and refined dining, often in the palace and race course area |
Mid-range stays near the palace and city centre suit first-time visitors. Quieter residential areas work well for families wanting calmer evenings. Hotel brands are confirmed at booking.
Getting to Mysore and moving around
Mysuru is reached by road from Bengaluru in about 3 hours over roughly 140 km, by train to Mysuru railway station, or by air to Mysuru Airport at Mandakalli, about 10 km from the city. No permits are needed for the sights on this route.
In the city, autos and city buses cost about Rs.200-400 a day as of October 2026, while this package uses a private vehicle. Mobile connectivity is generally reliable in the city; confirm road and access conditions at booking. Around Dasara in October, palace areas and procession routes get crowded and access can be restricted, so check dates before fixing travel. Entry fees listed for Indian visitors include Mysuru Palace at Rs.70 for adults. See more on our Mysore tour packages page.

HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
