Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Czech Republic family holiday cover?
The trip covers five nights across two mountain regions, starting and ending at Václav Havel Airport Prague. Three nights are in the Krkonoše area in North Bohemia and two nights in the Šumava area in South Bohemia, in Standard 3-4 star hotels.
The Krkonoše stay includes a marked trail walk, the Rychory Nature Trail and the cableway to Černá hora. The Šumava stay is lighter, with one easy forest trail and a free afternoon. Every transfer is by private vehicle, so nobody carries luggage on public transport.

Why do families pick Krkonoše and Šumava?
Both national parks have marked trails at different difficulty levels, so each age group can walk a distance that suits it. Krkonoše protects the Czech Republic's highest mountain range, and Šumava has rolling hills, forests and pastures.
Children can do a short loop while grandparents take the cableway from Janské lázně up to Černá hora for the Krkonoše panorama. Both areas are far from the Prague crowds, so queues are short and dinner can be finished by 7 pm. The trade-off is that you need a vehicle and driver between bases, and this package includes both.
When is the best time to visit Czech Republic from India?
For this route, May to September works best. June to August is warmest at about 12 to 25 C, but crowds are high and prices peak, with occasional thunderstorms.
May and September run about 9 to 20 C with medium crowds and lower prices, which usually suits young children and elders better. Winter is cold and cloudy, and temperatures can fall well below freezing with possible snow, which makes mountain trails and the cableway unreliable. For a school-holiday trip, book early, because mountain hotels fill fast in July and August.
How much does a Czech Republic trip cost for a family?
The price is Rs.70,000 per person on twin sharing, land only, as of 2026. It covers hotels, the meals listed, private transfers and the sightseeing in the itinerary. Flights, visa, insurance, lunches and personal spending are extra.
Indicative price tiers, per person, for context:
- Budget 3-star: approx Rs.52,500
- Standard 4-star: Rs.70,000 (the default on this page)
- Premium 5-star: approx Rs.1,12,000
A child sharing a room with two adults usually costs less than the adult rate. Confirm the exact child price at booking once you share the children's ages.
Kid and elder logistics on this route
Transfers use a private air-conditioned vehicle with seating arranged so children and elders sit together, and the driver stops about every 90 minutes on longer drives. Hotels are asked for ground-floor or lift-access rooms for grandparents, to be confirmed at booking.
Prague's main bus and tram routes are largely wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, which helps on arrival and departure days. Mountain trails are not paved, so a foldable stroller is better than a heavy one. Keep snacks, water and a change of clothes for children in the vehicle at all times.
Why this works for families
The route is built around what children and elders actually tolerate: short drives, a fixed base for three nights, and shared activities instead of splitting the group.
- Only one drive is longer than 3 hours (Day 4), and it has two breaks.
- Krkonoše is a three-night stay, so you unpack once and the children settle.
- The cableway to Černá hora gives grandparents a view without a climb.
- Hotel dinners mean no hunting for restaurants after a long day.
- A free afternoon sits in both regions, so there is room to rest.
Highlights by age group
Each age group gets something suited to its energy and stamina, so nobody is left waiting at the hotel.
Younger children
- Short marked loops in Krkonoše National Park with frequent photo and snack stops
- Cableway ride from Janské lázně to Černá hora
- Open meadow and forest play time on the free afternoons
Teenagers
- Longer stretches of the Rychory Nature Trail, which gives views and access to relatively undisturbed natural areas
- Cycling or mountain biking in the Šumava area, which has terrain used for it, subject to availability and confirmation at booking
- Photography from the Černá hora panorama
Grandparents
- Cableway to Černá hora instead of a climb
- Slow walks with rest benches on the Rychory trail
- Free afternoons at the hotel, with garden time
- Free travel on Prague public transport for passengers over 65, according to Prague transport information
Pace, rest and driving times
The daily rhythm is a morning activity, a lunch break and a free or light afternoon, with dinner at the hotel. Most days involve under two hours of driving, and Day 4 is the only long transfer.
- Day 1: about 2.5 to 3 hours Prague to Krkonoše, with one rest stop
- Days 2 and 3: local drives to trailheads and the cableway
- Day 4: about 4.5 to 5 hours Krkonoše to Šumava, with two breaks
- Day 6: about 2.5 to 3 hours Šumava to Prague airport
Nap time for young children fits easily into the vehicle on Days 1 and 4. If an elder tires, the morning walk can be shortened without changing the afternoon plan.
Rooms, meals and comfort
Family rooms or connecting rooms are requested on every stay and depend on availability, so confirm at booking. A triple or family room is usually better than two separate rooms for children under 12.
Czech cuisine includes fresh meats, dumplings and warm soups. Vegetarian meals are usually possible at hotels if you ask in advance, while Jain food is harder to arrange outside Prague. Hotels serve simple child-friendly dishes such as soups and pasta. Carry some dry snacks for trail days.
Travelling with kids and elders: five tips
- Pack layers and a rain jacket even in summer, because thunderstorms can occur from June to August and mountain mornings are cool.
- Carry each child's passport, visa copy and birth certificate, since officials may ask for proof of age and relationship.
- Bring prescription medicines with a doctor's note, and travel insurance with medical cover.
- Use sturdy walking shoes with grip; trails in Krkonoše and Šumava are unpaved.
- Keep some Czech koruna for small purchases at trailside stalls and cafes, since the country does not use the euro.
Where you will stay in Krkonoše and Šumava
The stays are Standard 3-4 star mountain hotels in the Krkonoše area for three nights and a similar category in the Šumava area for two nights. No hotel brand is named here; final properties are confirmed at booking.
- Budget 3-star (approx Rs.52,500 per person): simple rooms, hotel dinners, fewer on-site facilities; best when the trip is mostly about the trails.
- Standard 4-star (Rs.70,000 per person): larger rooms, family or connecting options, a restaurant on site and better common areas for children and elders.
- Premium 5-star (approx Rs.1,12,000 per person): bigger rooms, more services and often a spa or pool, which suits families who want comfort over cost.
Entry, money and flights for Indian travellers to Czech Republic
Indian passport holders need a Czech Republic visa, applied for through the official Czech visa application route for your city of residence. Check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, since these change. The local currency is the Czech koruna, not the euro, and this page does not quote an exchange rate.
Flights from Mumbai to Václav Havel Airport Prague take about 12.25 hours as of September 2026, via Frankfurt, with no non-stop service stated. The airport is 18 km from central Prague. Fares and airlines are not included in this package, so check them separately.

FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
