The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 8-night journey through Australia— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Australia trip cover?
This 8-night route divides into two distinct halves: three nights based in Cairns for reef and rainforest days, followed by four nights in Sydney for the Blue Mountains, coastal walks and a harbour day. Most days have one guided activity block in the morning or afternoon, with evenings left free.
The Cairns half centres on the outer Great Barrier Reef — a full day on the water with snorkelling stops, a marine biologist briefing and lunch on board. The Daintree rainforest day adds a boardwalk walk and a river cruise. The Sydney half builds toward the Blue Mountains hike, then adds the Bondi–Coogee coastal walk and a day in Royal National Park south of the city. Day 8 is free for optional add-ons or rest before departure.
Why choose this route over a standard Australia holiday?
Most Australia packages for Indian travellers focus on Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, with theme parks and city shopping as the main draws. This route trades that format for water time and trail time. You still see Sydney Harbour and the Opera House, but those are evening walks rather than the centrepiece.
It works well for travellers who have already done a city-focused Australia trip and want something more active, or for first-timers who would rather spend their days outdoors. If your group includes young children, senior parents or anyone who finds sustained walking difficult, a city-and-beach itinerary is a better fit.
When is the best time to visit Australia from India?
May to October is the dry season in tropical north Queensland and the coolest period in the Blue Mountains, making it the most reliable window for this itinerary. Reef visibility is generally good and stinger risk is lower during these months.
November to April brings heavy rain, high humidity and possible cyclones in northern Australia. The Great Barrier Reef also carries stinger risk during the tropical summer. July and August are peak travel months, so reef day-trip boats and Blue Mountains accommodation fill quickly — book at least eight to ten weeks ahead if you are travelling then.
What does the package price include?
The price of Rs.93,500 per person (twin sharing, land only, as of 2026) covers 8 nights in standard 3–4 star hotels, daily breakfast, the Great Barrier Reef full-day snorkelling trip with equipment, the Blue Mountains guided day hike, airport transfers in both Cairns and Sydney, and all intercity transfers listed in the itinerary.
International airfare, the Australian visa fee, travel insurance, internal flights between Cairns and Sydney, most lunches and dinners, and personal expenses are not included. The internal Cairns–Sydney flight is quoted separately at booking.
The Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling Day
The reef day is the centrepiece of the Cairns section. The vessel departs from Cairns marina in the morning and travels to outer reef sites, which typically take around 90 minutes to reach. A safety briefing and equipment fitting happen on board before the first snorkelling stop.
Most reef day-trip operators run two snorkelling sessions at different sites, with a marine biologist or reef guide giving a short talk between stops. Lunch is served on board. The boat returns to Cairns by late afternoon. Departures can be cancelled or cut short if sea conditions deteriorate — the operator will reschedule or refund the activity if this happens. Wear a full-body rash guard or stinger suit, particularly if you are travelling between November and April.
Blue Mountains Hike: What to Expect
The Blue Mountains day trip runs from Sydney to Katoomba, roughly 90 minutes west by road. The hike covers the Giant Stairway descent and the Federal Pass section — a route graded moderate, with steep stone steps and uneven ground. Total walking time is around four to five hours.
The Three Sisters rock formation at Echo Point is the main viewpoint stop. A certified local guide leads the group and sets the pace. The track can close after heavy rain, in which case the operator will adjust the route or reschedule. Wear trail shoes with grip; flat sandals are not suitable.
Who This Trip Is For
This itinerary suits adults and older teenagers who can manage four to five hours of walking on uneven ground and are comfortable in open water. No prior diving or trekking certification is needed.
- Minimum fitness: able to walk 8–10 km on uneven terrain without assistance
- Water comfort: basic swimming ability for snorkelling; non-swimmers can join with a life jacket and crew support — declare this at booking
- Minimum age: typically 12 for the reef day trip and 10 for guided walks; confirm at booking as operator rules vary
- Not recommended for: travellers with heart conditions, severe asthma or mobility limitations without prior medical clearance
- A city-and-beach route is a better fit for groups with young children or senior travellers who find sustained walking difficult

Weather, Safety and What Happens When Plans Change
Australia does not involve altitude acclimatisation, but weather is the main variable that can change daily plans. Reef boats operate within sea-state limits set by the operator; if conditions are unsafe, the departure is cancelled and rescheduled or refunded. Blue Mountains tracks close after significant rainfall — the guide will redirect to an alternative route or postpone the hike.
Sun exposure is strong in both Cairns and the Blue Mountains, even on overcast days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and carry at least one litre of water per person on trail days. Stinger suits are recommended on reef days, particularly from November to April. Declare any medical condition — including asthma, heart conditions or water anxiety — at the time of booking so the operator can plan accordingly.
Gear and Packing Checklist
- Provided by the operator: snorkelling mask, fins and snorkel; life jacket if required; guided walk leadership and safety equipment
- Bring for reef days: full-body rash guard or stinger suit, reef-safe sunscreen, waterproof camera or case, dry bag
- Bring for hike days: trail shoes with grip (not sandals), moisture-wicking clothing, light rain jacket, trekking poles optional
- General: wide-brim hat, sunglasses, reusable water bottle (minimum 1 litre), insect repellent for rainforest days
- Documents: Australian visa, travel insurance policy with adventure activity cover, booking confirmations
Permits, Park Fees and Rules
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park fees and national park entry charges on guided days are included in the package price. Some optional activities — such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb — carry separate charges payable directly. Check the official Australian government and park authority portals for current fee schedules before you travel, as these can change. Operators on the reef and in national parks are licensed; follow their briefing instructions and any no-go zone rules on the water.
Where You Stay: Cairns and Sydney
The first three nights are in a standard 3–4 star hotel in Cairns city centre, within easy reach of the marina and the Esplanade. The following four nights are in a standard 3–4 star hotel in Sydney CBD, close to Circular Quay and public transport links for the Blue Mountains day trip. No specific hotel names are confirmed here — the exact property is confirmed at booking based on availability. Both stays are on a twin-sharing basis with daily breakfast included.
Entry, Visa and Flights for Indian Travellers Going to Australia
Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Australia. The standard option for tourists is an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) or a Visitor visa (subclass 600), applied for through the official Australian Department of Home Affairs portal. The ETA is app-based and processed online; the Visitor visa requires a more detailed application. Check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, as these are subject to change.
The local currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD). Do not quote or rely on exchange rates at the time of reading — check a live rate close to your travel date. Flights from major Indian cities to Cairns or Sydney take approximately 11 to 13 hours depending on the origin city and routing, based on available flight data as of 2026. Internal flights between Cairns and Sydney are not included in the land package and are quoted separately at booking.

FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
HoneymoonHoneymooned in Kashmir for 7 nights in May. Gulmarg had light snow still and we got a gondola ride on Day 4. The tulip garden in Srinagar was in full bloom. Tripstor arranged a candlelit dinner on the houseboat which was a nice touch.
FriendsThree friends and I did a 9-night Australia package with stops in Melbourne and Sydney. We spent an afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and caught a local match. Tripstor sorted our group visa applications together which saved a lot of back and forth. Good experience overall.
