The thinking behind this journey.
A closer look at this 6-night journey through Armenia— who it's built for, what you'll experience, and why the pace works.
Journey notes
Why this route works
What does this Armenia honeymoon trip cover?
This trip covers Yerevan, the Garni and Geghard valley, Lake Sevan with Dilijan, and Khor Virap, using six nights in standard 3-4 star hotels. Most days involve one main outing and a free evening, so the schedule never feels like a tour.
Geghard Monastery, with chapels partly carved into the cliff, is the emotional centre of the route. Garni Temple, a first-century colonnaded structure above a gorge, and the Stones basalt columns sit on the same road. One private car covers all three in a single day, which is how we plan it.
Yerevan itself is easy for two people on foot or by taxi. Yandex Go and GG ride-hailing apps work in the city, and an app taxi ride typically costs AMD 700-1,200, so you are not tied to a driver every evening.
Why does this route suit couples?
This route suits couples because the distances are short, the sights are quiet in the early morning and Yerevan gives you a proper evening scene without a resort bubble. Three reasons stand out:
- Privacy: Geghard opens around 08:00. A morning slot there, before tour groups arrive, gives you the carved chapels almost to yourselves.
- Setting: Garni's temple stands above a gorge, and the Stones is a short walk below it. Both are good for slow photographs together.
- Pace: Only one day involves a long drive, the Lake Sevan and Dilijan loop. The rest are 1-2 hour outings from Yerevan with a free afternoon.
Which moments should you plan around?
Four moments are worth planning around: a first morning at Geghard, sunset over the Ararat plain at Khor Virap, a wine evening in Yerevan, and a lake-side stop at Sevanavank. Each has a best day on this route.
- First morning at Geghard (Day 3): Reach the monastery soon after it opens at around 08:00. The cliff chapels are cooler and quieter then.
- Ararat views at Khor Virap (Day 6): The monastery is visited for its view of Mount Ararat. Clear mornings and late afternoons usually give the best visibility; weather decides on the day.
- Wine evening (Day 2): An Armenian wine tasting that introduces indigenous grape varieties, planned for your first full day in the capital.
- Lake Sevan steps (Day 4): The climb to Sevanavank gives a wide lake view. Summer afternoons can bring mountain thunderstorms around Sevan, so we keep this stop for the morning.
Romantic highlights on this route
The highlights below are named experiences, each tied to a real place on the route.
- Garni Temple at the gorge edge: a first-century Greco-Roman colonnade, entry around 1,500 AMD per person, confirm at booking.
- Stones: basalt columns in Garni Gorge, a short walk from the temple.
- Geghard Monastery: a UNESCO-listed complex with chapels partly carved into the cliff; entry is free.
- Sevanavank above Lake Sevan: a medieval monastery with a long lake view from the top steps.
- Haghartsin Monastery in Dilijan: a medieval monastery reached through the forests of Dilijan National Park.
- Armenian wine tasting for two: a tasting built around local grape varieties, followed by dinner.
How the days flow
The days are paced with one main outing, a free afternoon and a relaxed evening, so you never run from sight to sight. Most mornings start after breakfast, with pick-up around 9:00 or 9:30 once Day 1 is done.
Day 1 is arrival only. Day 2 is a light Yerevan walk plus the wine tasting. Day 3 is the Garni and Geghard loop, which a typical day trip fits into 5-8 hours. Day 4 is the longest drive, to Lake Sevan and Dilijan. Day 5 is deliberately free, and Day 6 is a half-day to Khor Virap with the afternoon open. Sunset slots stay clear on most days if you want to walk or sit in a café.
Choosing the right stay style
For couples, the stay that matters most is a quiet room in central Yerevan with easy access to restaurants. Standard 3-4 star hotels here are comfortable and well placed, and we assign them by availability at booking.
- Room type: ask for a higher floor or a city-facing room if views matter to you.
- Privacy: a smaller hotel with fewer rooms usually feels calmer than a large business property.
- Access: staying near Republic Square or the Cascade makes evening walks and short taxi rides easy.
- Outside Yerevan: Garni village, the Lake Sevan shore and Dilijan are options for an overnight if you want a quieter setting; these change the route and the price.
Best months for a couple's trip to Armenia
The best months are May, June, September and October, when temperatures are comfortable and the monastery roads are open. July and August bring heat and peak pricing, and winter snow can close higher roads.
| Season | Temperature range (Yerevan) | What it means for a couple |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec-Feb) | -10 to 8 C | Quiet and cheaper, but snow can close higher monastery roads |
| Spring (Mar-May) | -2 to 26 C | Warming, blooming, highest rainfall; May is comfortable |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | 12 to 36 C | Dry; July and August reach 35-40 C and carry peak surcharges |
| Autumn (Sep-Nov) | -1 to 27 C | September and October are mild; November turns cold and quiet |
As of 2026, peak surcharges in July and August are around 30-50% on accommodation and 25-40% on flights. Prices also rise in late September during wine harvest festivals.
Add-ons worth considering
Four add-ons suit honeymooners on this route: a private dinner, a spa session, a photographer and an extra wine-region day. Each adds something specific and fits on a particular day.
- Private dinner or surprise setup: best on Day 5 in Yerevan, when the day is free. Price depends on the venue; confirm at booking.
- Spa or hammam session: fits the morning of Day 5. Availability depends on the hotel.
- Photographer: most useful at Garni and Geghard on Day 3, or at Khor Virap on Day 6. Quoted separately.
- Extra wine day in Vayots Dzor: the Areni wine region and Noravank canyon are a longer day trip from Yerevan. This needs an extra night or a very early start, so ask us before booking.
Where you stay in Yerevan and beyond
Most nights are spent in central Yerevan, which works as the base for excursions to Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan and southern Armenia. The stay category is standard 3-4 star; the indicative tiers below are per person on twin sharing.
| Stay tier | Indicative price per person | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star | Approx Rs.43,000 | Clean, simple rooms, central or near-central location |
| Standard 4-star (default) | Rs.57,000 | Comfortable rooms, breakfast included, good access to restaurants |
| Premium 5-star | Approx Rs.91,000 | Larger rooms, better views, hotel dining and spa on site |
These tiers are indicative and depend on dates and availability. We do not name hotels until your dates are fixed.
Entry, money and flights for Indian travellers
Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Armenia. Apply through the official Armenian e-visa portal, and check the official portal for the current fee and processing time, since both can change.
The local currency is the Armenian dram (AMD). Carry some cash for markets and bakeries, and use cards in Yerevan. Note that Yerevan introduced a unified public-transport ticketing system in September 2026, so cash is not accepted on the metro, buses or trolleybuses; payment is by bank card, QR ticket or pass. Flights from major Indian cities to Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) usually involve a connection, so plan for a long travel day each way. Confirm fares and routings at booking.

CoupleNorway is expensive but the experience is worth planning for. We did the Flam Railway and the Sognefjord on Day 5. Tripstor gave us a realistic budget breakdown before we booked, which I appreciated. No surprises on the ground.
FamilyBooked a family package for 7 nights covering Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. The Cellular Jail light and sound show on Day 1 set a good tone for the trip. Kids were engaged throughout and the itinerary was not too rushed.
FamilyTravelled with my parents who are in their late 50s. Tripstor recommended two full acclimatization days in Leh before any high-altitude drives and that made a real difference. Tso Moriri was quieter than Pangong and honestly more worth the drive.
